Fix: ChatGPT “Something Went Wrong While Generating the Response” Error

ChatGPT can accept a prompt and begin answering normally, then stop mid-sentence and replace the unfinished reply with “Something went wrong while generating the response.”

The prompt reached ChatGPT, but the reply did not finish returning to the conversation. This is a general failure message rather than a diagnosis.

The interruption may be temporary, limited to one long chat, caused by the browser or app session, blocked by a network filter, or produced by an OpenAI service incident.

One failed answer does not require a browser reinstall or account changes. What matters is whether Retry works, whether a new chat responds, and whether the same account fails on another device or network.

What happens when you test againWhat that result suggests
Retry finishes the answerThe first response failed temporarily. No further cleanup is needed.
A new chat works, but one older chat keeps failingThe saved conversation or its accumulated context is involved.
ChatGPT works in a private window or another browserStored site data or an extension in the normal browser profile is interfering.
The mobile app or a phone hotspot worksThe original browser, device, or network needs attention.
New chats fail across browsers, devices, and networksCheck OpenAI status, then report the persistent account or service failure.
Copy any prompt text you still need before refreshing, signing out, or clearing site data. Starting a new chat leaves the old conversation intact, so there is no reason to delete it during this test.

1. Retry the Reply Once, Then Test a New Chat

If only one response failed, repeat it before changing the browser or network.

Retry checks whether the interruption was temporary; a new chat separates that failure from a problem carried by the current conversation. The new-chat comparison is not needed when Retry completes the reply.

  1. If ChatGPT is still showing Thinking, Generating, or Working, wait 30–60 seconds.
  2. If it remains stuck, select Stop generating.
  3. Select Retry or Regenerate once.
  4. If the message returns, open New chat and send the prompt again. Keep the original conversation instead of deleting it.

These are the first recovery steps in OpenAI’s current ChatGPT error-message guidance.

If the new chat works, continue there and bring over only the context you still need. If every new chat still fails, move to the next method and check the service status.

2. Check Whether ChatGPT Is Having a Service Incident

An OpenAI-side failure can interrupt responses for many people at once while the ChatGPT page itself still opens. This usually happens when response generation or conversation delivery is degraded. Do not use local browser changes to chase an active service incident.

  1. Open the official OpenAI Status page.
  2. Check ChatGPT for an incident involving conversations, elevated errors, latency, or availability.
  3. If an incident is active, wait until OpenAI marks it resolved, then reload ChatGPT and retry in a new chat.

The status page reports aggregate conditions, so a green page does not prove that every account and region is unaffected.

If an incident appears, wait for OpenAI to resolve it. If no incident appears and new chats still fail, move to the next method and test a clean browser session.

3. Test a Clean Browser Session Instead of Installing a New Browser Immediately

This usually happens when stored session data has gone stale or an extension interrupts the response stream. A private window isolates those profile-level causes before anything is erased.

This browser-only cleanup is not needed when the same failure already appears in the official app.

  1. Hard-refresh ChatGPT with Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + R on macOS.
  2. Open an Incognito, InPrivate, or other private window and sign in at chatgpt.com.
  3. Start a new chat and send a short test prompt.
  4. If the private window works, return to the normal profile and disable extensions that block ads, scripts, trackers, cookies, or web requests. Re-enable them one at a time after testing.
  5. If extensions are not responsible, clear the stored cookies and site data for chatgpt.com only, close all ChatGPT tabs, and sign in again.

Clearing site data signs you out, but it does not delete conversations stored in your ChatGPT account. Firefox or another current browser can be used for the same comparison, but changing browsers permanently is unnecessary if private mode identifies the profile problem.

If ChatGPT works in the private window, the issue is in the normal browser profile. If the error still appears there, move to the next method and check for VPN or web-filtering interference.

If ChatGPT cannot load far enough to accept a prompt, follow the more specific ChatGPT site-loading checks instead.

4. Temporarily Remove VPN, Proxy, or Web-Filtering Interference

This failure can happen when a VPN, secure DNS tool, proxy, or antivirus web filter interrupts the connection carrying the response. Pausing only that connection-altering feature isolates the filter without shutting down the entire security suite.

Skip this test if none of those tools is active.

Keep the firewall and real-time malware protection enabled. Pause only Web Protection, HTTPS scanning, or the active VPN for one test, then restore it. Ask the administrator before changing controls on a managed device.
  1. Disconnect any active VPN or proxy, then reload ChatGPT.
  2. If the error remains and your security app has Web Protection or Web Shield, pause that feature temporarily.
  3. Open a new chat and send one short prompt.
  4. Turn the paused protection back on immediately after the test.

If ChatGPT works while filtering is paused, the filter is interrupting the connection.

Use the security product’s allowlist or ask the network administrator to follow OpenAI’s current ChatGPT network recommendations. Leaving protection disabled is not the fix.

If the error still appears with the VPN and web filter out of the test, move to the next method and compare another network or device.

5. Test Another Network and the Official ChatGPT App

The error can persist when the original browser, device, or network interrupts the response stream. The mobile app changes the device and browser environment, while a phone hotspot changes the network.

Comparing both separates an account-wide failure from one tied to the original setup. Run this only if the supported browser checks did not isolate it.

  1. Connect the affected computer to a phone hotspot, or switch the phone from Wi-Fi to mobile data.
  2. Open the same account in the official ChatGPT mobile app. If it is not installed, use OpenAI’s official ChatGPT download page rather than a third-party store link.
  3. Start a new chat and send a short prompt.
  4. Reconnect to the original network after the comparison.

If the app works on the same Wi-Fi while the browser fails, the problem was in the browser environment. Return to the clean-browser checks.

If the same device works only on the hotspot, the original VPN, router, ISP, company filter, or DNS path is involved. On a managed network, give the administrator OpenAI’s network-requirements link from the previous section.

If ChatGPT explicitly shows Network error instead of the response-generation message, use the focused ChatGPT Network Error guide.

If the Error Still Appears Everywhere

When new chats fail in multiple browsers, on the official app, and through another network while OpenAI Status shows no incident, repeated cache clearing is unlikely to add useful evidence. Record the failure once and send OpenAI the details needed to investigate it.

  1. Note the exact time and time zone, selected model, conversation URL or ID, browser or app version, operating system, and whether the network is personal or managed.
  2. Take a screenshot showing the exact error. On the web version, OpenAI Support may also request browser console errors and a HAR recording of the failed request.
  3. Open OpenAI’s support instructions, then use the chat bubble at the bottom-right of help.openai.com.
HAR files can contain conversation and account-related data. Use the browser’s sanitized HAR export when available, review the file before sharing it, and never include your password, session cookie, API key, or one-time verification code.
