How to Fix League of Legends VAN 1067 Error?
League of Legends can close with VANGUARD ERROR: VAN 1067 before a match starts or partway through one. Vanguard, the game’s anti-cheat software, has encountered a problem starting or checking your PC, so League cannot continue.

The Vanguard icon may still be visible, and your internet may work normally. Its vgc service can stop during gameplay because another program interferes. Riot’s VAN 1067 guidance does not define it as a TPM or Secure Boot error.
| What happens | Where to start |
|---|---|
| League closes as soon as it opens. | Restart Windows, then check the Vanguard service. |
| League runs for a few minutes, then closes. | Test background services and check the crash log. |
| Vanguard also names TPM or Secure Boot. | Check the specific requirement before changing firmware. |
1. Restart Windows and Test Without Extra Devices
Closing League does not restart Vanguard. A Windows restart gives the anti-cheat a fresh start; disconnecting unnecessary devices also removes a possible startup conflict.
- Save your work and close League. Exit Riot Client from the system tray. If it remains open, use Ctrl + Shift + Esc and end the Riot Client or League processes.

A real restart reloads Vanguard more cleanly than closing the game window and pressing Play again. - Disconnect controllers, USB hubs, and unused peripherals. Keep your keyboard and mouse connected, and safely eject storage devices first.
- Choose Start > Power > Restart. After Windows loads, right-click the official Riot Client shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and launch League.
If League opens, test in the Practice Tool or a custom game rather than a ranked match. A client that opens successfully may still fail several minutes later.
Check for Detected Threats
Scan for malware, but VAN 1067 is not a malware diagnosis. A clean result does not rule out a conflict with legitimate software.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and check for updates.
- Return to Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan, and click Scan now.

Riot calls out malware as a direct cause of VAN 1067, so scan before reinstalling or changing firmware settings. - Follow the security app’s instructions for detected threats, then restart. If another antivirus manages protection, use its full scan instead.
If League still fails after handling detected threats, check whether vgc can start.
2. Check Whether the Vanguard Service Starts
Vanguard can be installed while its vgc service is stopped. With Vanguard Pre-Check enabled, however, on-demand startup is intentional. Check its status through the Vanguard tray icon.
- From an administrator Windows account, press Windows + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find vgc, right-click it, and open Properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic, click Start if stopped, then Apply > OK.

If VGC is disabled or stuck, Vanguard cannot finish the check League needs before opening. - Restart Windows and test League again.
If vgc is missing or Start returns an error, record that message and reinstall Vanguard. If it starts but stops during gameplay, changing Automatic again will not fix the crash; check background conflicts.
3. Check TPM or Secure Boot Only for a Specific Warning
Vanguard’s security requirements depend on the PC’s configuration; VAN 1067 alone does not tell you which setting to change.
- For a TPM warning, open
tpm.mscwith Windows + R. Look for The TPM is ready for use and Specification Version: 2.0.
Verify Windows reports TPM 2.0, UEFI mode, and Secure Boot before changing anything in firmware. - For a Secure Boot warning, open
msinfo32. Under System Summary, check BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State. Enabled Secure Boot should report UEFI and On.

Riot’s TPM and Secure Boot guides link manufacturer instructions. Enable only the requirement named by Vanguard:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart. Enable the required setting only: TPM may be called Intel PTT or AMD fTPM. Secure Boot menus vary by manufacturer.

Vanguard security checks depend on firmware settings that Windows can report but usually cannot enable by itself. - Save, restart, and recheck the Windows values. If the option is missing or its instructions are unclear, ask the manufacturer rather than changing unrelated settings.
If League still fails after the security warning clears, leave the working firmware settings alone.
4. Use a Clean Boot to Identify Conflicting Software
A background service can interrupt Vanguard during gameplay. A clean boot tests for this without uninstalling unrelated apps.
- Note your currently enabled services and startup apps so you can restore them. Press Windows + R, enter
msconfig, and open Services. - Check Hide all Microsoft services first, then click Disable all.
- Re-check vgc. Vanguard must remain enabled for this test.
- Under Startup > Open Task Manager, disable enabled startup apps temporarily. Close Task Manager, click Apply > OK in System Configuration, and restart.
- Open Riot Client manually and test in a custom game long enough to cover the usual crash time.
If League works, re-enable items in small groups, restarting and testing each time. Update the confirmed conflicting software or consult its vendor. Restore the other services and startup apps afterward.
The clean-boot walkthrough adds screenshots; keep vgc enabled for League. On a work or school PC, ask IT before changing services.
The Windows Features screen below is not part of a clean boot. Turning off Hyper-V, Virtual Machine Platform, or Windows Hypervisor Platform is not a standard VAN 1067 fix. Do not disable Memory Integrity or VBS for this code alone; Vanguard may require those protections.

For Crashes That Continue: Check Event Viewer
- After the error, open
eventvwr.mscthrough Windows + R. Select Windows Logs > Application. - Open an Error entry matching the crash time. Record the Faulting application and Faulting module for Vanguard or League, not an unrelated application.
League users have traced crashes to National Instruments, Audinate/Dante, and Bonjour components. Check the file’s location and company under Properties > Details before updating or uninstalling the program. Do not delete DLLs from System32.
If no relevant entry appears or the module is unknown, report that to Riot rather than guessing which program to remove.
5. Reinstall Vanguard Before Reinstalling League
A missing service or failed installation needs more than a restart. Reinstalling the anti-cheat replaces its files without redownloading League, although other Riot games using Vanguard will also need it restored.
- Close all Riot games and exit Riot Client. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features) and uninstall Riot Vanguard.

A Vanguard reinstall resets the anti-cheat files without wiping the full League installation first. - Restart Windows, then open Riot Client and launch League to reinstall Vanguard.
- Complete the installation and restart again before playing.
If uninstall fails, follow Riot’s manual removal instructions. Avoid repeated reinstalls if the service returns but still crashes at the same point.
6. Repair League’s Files
Damaged League files may still prevent the game from opening after Vanguard is restored. Repair checks them without reinstalling the game.
- Open Riot Client > Profile icon > Settings.
- Select League of Legends and click Repair if available.

Repair handles broken game files while cache cleanup removes stale local launch data. - Let repair finish, then launch League and test again.
Cache cleanup is conditional. If Riot Support asks you to clear local League data, collect logs first and remove only the folders they identify under %LOCALAPPDATA%. The screenshot below does not justify deleting the entire Riot Games folder or other games’ data. Leave the installation under C:\Riot Games alone.

If League still fails after repair, a normal game reinstall is an option. It will not remove a conflicting background service.
7. Install Pending Windows Updates
Vanguard relies on Windows security and system services. Complete pending updates before retesting the game.
- Open Settings > Windows Update, or Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10. Install available updates.

Firmware updates can help TPM and Secure Boot detection, but they should be handled with manufacturer instructions. - Restart to finish installation, then test League.
A BIOS update is not a routine VAN 1067 fix. Consider one only when the manufacturer documents a relevant security-feature problem, with its exact update instructions and encryption precautions.
If Riot Client still fails to sign in or connect, follow Riot’s PC connection checks. Network resets are not a substitute for identifying why vgc stops.
8. Use Riot Repair Tool to Collect Logs
If VAN 1067 still returns, logs are more useful than repeating the same reinstall. The Riot Repair Tool collects diagnostic files; it is not the Repair button used above.
- Download the Windows version from Riot’s Repair Tool page.

- Right-click the tool and choose Run as administrator.

- Select League of Legends and let it collect the logs.

- Attach the generated ZIP and error screenshot to a Riot Support ticket. Include your Windows version, when the error appears, whether
vgcstops, any Event Viewer details, and the fixes already tested. Mention Pre-Check or a separate security warning if present.
If League opens, confirm it stays running in a custom game before returning to ranked matches.
