How to Fix “Multiplayer is disabled” Error in Minecraft: Bedrock

Minecraft: Bedrock Edition can open normally while the Servers tab shows “Multiplayer is disabled” and leaves Add Server unavailable.

The message appears before Minecraft tries to join a particular server. It therefore points to an account-level restriction, not to the selected world or server being offline.

Xbox privacy settings, a family-managed account, the wrong Microsoft account, or a missing console membership can all deny online play. The weak-connection warning shown on the same screen is separate; improving the connection will not unlock a blocked multiplayer permission.

1. Enable Multiplayer for the Microsoft Account Used in Minecraft

Minecraft reads its online-play permission from the Xbox profile attached to the Microsoft account. This remains true on Windows, PlayStation, Switch, and mobile, even if the player has never owned an Xbox.

When You can join multiplayer games is blocked, Bedrock disables the multiplayer controls before it attempts a connection.

Allowing that setting restores the account permission Bedrock checks when it builds the Servers screen.

1. In Minecraft, note the gamertag shown on the profile screen. The permission must be changed for that exact Microsoft account.
2. Open the official Xbox Privacy & online safety settings and sign in.
3. If Xbox opens at your profile first, select Manage Profile.
   
4. Open Settings below the profile information.
   
5. Go to Safety & Privacy > Manage safety, privacy, and message settings. The wording may vary slightly in the current Xbox interface.
   
6. Open the online-safety settings for Xbox and Windows devices.
   
7. Set You can join multiplayer games to Allow, then select Submit.
   
8. If you play with people on other platforms, also allow cross-network play. This is separate from the basic multiplayer permission.

A child or family-managed account normally cannot approve its own multiplayer access. The family organizer should sign in at the Microsoft Family page, select the affected member, and change the Xbox online-safety permission for that account.

Do not change the date of birth merely to bypass family controls. If an adult account is classified incorrectly, correct the account information through Microsoft instead.

After saving the permission, close Minecraft completely before checking the Servers tab again. A running game can continue using the old account state.

If Add Server appears after reopening Minecraft, the blocked account permission caused the message. If it is still disabled, refresh the signed-in account.

2. Refresh the Correct Microsoft Account in Minecraft

If the Xbox page already shows Allow, compare its gamertag with the one displayed inside Minecraft. Similar email addresses or multiple family profiles can make it easy to edit one account while the game uses another.

Minecraft can also keep the old permission in its saved session after the website setting changes.

Signing out forces the game to request the permission again for the account that actually signs back in.

1. Open Minecraft’s profile or account area and confirm the displayed gamertag.
2. Sign out of the Microsoft account inside Minecraft.
3. Close Minecraft completely. On Windows, close the Minecraft Launcher and Xbox app as well.
4. Reopen the game and sign in with the account whose multiplayer permission you changed.
5. On Windows, make sure the Xbox app and Minecraft are using the same Microsoft account.
6. Return to Play > Servers and check whether Add Server is available.

If Minecraft now shows Error Code: Drowned or cannot complete the Microsoft sign-in, the account session has become the immediate problem. Follow the Minecraft Drowned sign-in fixes before changing the multiplayer permission again.

Do not remove local worlds or reinstall Minecraft for this account refresh; neither action changes a server-side permission.

If Add Server returns after signing in again, the old or incorrect session was the cause. If it is still disabled on a console, check the console membership next.

3. Check the Console’s Online Multiplayer Membership

Console multiplayer fails when the account owns Minecraft but does not currently have the platform’s online-play entitlement. Buying the game and paying for online console multiplayer are separate.

This restores the console entitlement needed to approve Minecraft’s online session before Bedrock opens a server or Realm.

If you are not playing on a console, skip this section. No console multiplayer membership is required on Windows, Android, iPhone, iPad, or Java Edition on PC.

1. Check the subscription on the same console account that launches Minecraft. Xbox players can review it under Microsoft Services & subscriptions.
2. If you are choosing an Xbox plan, use the current Game Pass comparison and confirm that online console multiplayer is included. Plan names can change.
3. Renew or correct the console membership if necessary.
4. Quit Minecraft rather than leaving it suspended, then reopen it so the console can recheck access.

An active membership does not override a blocked Microsoft account permission. If the subscription is current and the whole Servers tab is still locked, the Xbox privacy setting remains the relevant check. Do not reinstall the game for a subscription or permission problem.

4. Disable Multiplayer for a Greyed-Out Local World to Open It Solo

Some Bedrock screens label a saved world Multiplayer disabled even when the player only wants to open it alone. In that narrower case, turning off multiplayer for the world can make the local save playable without an online membership.

1. Open Play > Worlds.
2. Select the pencil or edit icon beside the affected world.
3. Open Multiplayer.
4. Turn off Multiplayer Game, save the change, and open the world again.

5. Update Minecraft and Escalate a Stuck Account Restriction

When an old Bedrock client or suspended game session keeps outdated account data, the menu can remain locked after the online permission has changed. Updating and restarting forces Minecraft to load the current client and request fresh account state.

Skip the service-status check if only this account is affected and other Xbox-connected games work normally.

1. Install the latest Minecraft update from the platform’s official store.
2. Restart the device fully instead of resuming Minecraft from standby or Quick Resume.
3. Check the official Xbox status page if multiplayer suddenly stopped working across several Xbox-connected games.
4. Test the same Microsoft account on another Bedrock device if one is available. If the restriction follows the account, the device installation is not the cause.

If Add Server returns but only one world, Realm, or server will not connect, the account restriction has been cleared.

The remaining failure is now specific to that destination. Continue with the separate Minecraft Unable to Connect to World guide instead of changing privacy settings again.

If the entire multiplayer area is still disabled after the correct account shows Allow, the family settings are clear, and the console membership is active, contact Minecraft Support.

Include the platform, gamertag, whether the account belongs to a family group, and screenshots of both the disabled menu and the saved Xbox permission.

If Add Server appears after the update and full restart, Minecraft had been using outdated client or account state. No reinstall is needed.
