(reReady)How to Fix Samsung Smart Switch Error While Updating Device Software

Your Samsung phone stops at An error has occurred while updating the device software and tells you to use Smart Switch’s emergency recovery function. Reconnecting it may leave the same screen in place, with no access to Android.

The phone’s message does not guarantee that desktop Smart Switch can recover that model. The important check is whether the application lists your failed update. If the phone still starts normally and only the computer connection fails, use the connection procedure in Method 2.
Before Starting Recovery
- Do not interrupt an active update. A download screen or a temporarily unchanged percentage alone does not establish failure. Keep the cable connected while installation is running; begin recovery after an explicit failure or when Smart Switch directs you to recover.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power. Before a new update, charge a working phone to at least 20%; follow any higher charge requirement shown by Smart Switch.
- Protect your data. Back up anything you can still access. Recovery can involve rewriting device software and may erase data. If the phone cannot unlock and contains irreplaceable files, discuss data preservation with Samsung before proceeding.
- For a work or school device, involve its administrator if device policy prevents the update or recovery.
1. Recover the Failed Update in Smart Switch
After an interrupted installation, the device may be unable to start Android. Emergency recovery helps restore working software using the failed-update record for that device. This option depends on both the device and the application’s available recovery functions.
Continue only if the recovery list contains your own device. Use the computer on which the update failed first; a fresh installation elsewhere may not contain the original failure record.
- Once the failed attempt has ended, disconnect the device and reopen desktop Smart Switch on the original computer. Open More or the three-dot menu, then Emergency Software Recovery or Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization.

The wording and availability depend on the installed Smart Switch version. - Check the device shown in the failed-update list. Save any displayed recovery code privately, then select Emergency recovery beside your device. Do not select a different device or switch to a separate initialization option.

Record any recovery code privately before changing computers or reinstalling the application. - Read the recovery precautions, including any data-loss warning. Continue only when you accept those consequences. A report of someone else’s recovery preserving files does not guarantee that yours will.
- Reconnect the phone when prompted. Follow Smart Switch’s instructions for putting that model into its required recovery state, then select OK or the displayed confirmation.

Use the button sequence shown by Smart Switch for that device. - Allow Smart Switch to download and install the recovery software. Keep the computer awake and powered, and leave the cable connected. Do not use the phone, press reboot combinations, or close Smart Switch during installation.

Keep the computer powered and the cable connected until recovery finishes or reports a failure. - Wait for the completion message, select OK, and follow the disconnect instructions. Allow the phone to finish starting, then check that it reaches its normal unlock or setup screen.
If the Device Is Missing or Recovery Is Unsupported
An empty recovery list or an unsupported-device message is a reason to stop this procedure. It does not establish that the phone needs a factory reset. The instructions printed on its error screen may refer to a recovery function unavailable for your current setup.
A recovery code, when available, comes from the failed-update record on the original computer. It is not your IMEI or serial number. Keep it for Samsung support if recovery fails; installing older Smart Switch builds is not a reliable way to create one.
If the phone opens normally after successful recovery, back up its data. If it opens but a later update cannot connect, continue to Method 2. If it remains on the error screen or recovery fails, use the Samsung support guidance at the end.
2. Restore the USB Connection When the Phone Still Starts
When Android works but Smart Switch stays at Connecting, a cable or USB connection problem can prevent the update from starting. Using a compatible data cable with file-transfer mode helps establish communication before another attempt.
This procedure is not needed when recovery is already running. Do not use it to interrupt installation, and do not expect Android’s USB settings to be accessible on the emergency-error screen.
- After the failed attempt ends, connect the unlocked phone directly to the computer using a different, compatible USB data cable. Try another USB port if necessary. If a high-speed cable still leaves Smart Switch connecting, test a known-working USB 2.0 data cable, if you have one. The connector shape alone does not tell you its data speed or capabilities.

A charging connection alone does not establish a working data connection. - Swipe down the phone’s notification panel and tap the USB notification. Select Transferring files / Android Auto, or the equivalent file-transfer option. On Verizon devices, the USB mode intended for Verizon’s software updater is not compatible with Smart Switch. Choose the file-transfer option.

This setting is accessible only when Android starts and the device can be unlocked. - Open Smart Switch on the computer. Accept the phone’s Allow or Connect prompt for your trusted computer, then wait for the correct model to appear in the desktop window.

Then check that the desktop application displays the correct device. - Before retrying, use Backup and check its completion summary. Our Smart Switch backup guide explains the process. Save important items separately if the summary reports exclusions or failures.
- If Smart Switch offers an Update for the connected device, select it and read the prompts before confirming. Leave the phone connected and the computer powered until completion. An absent Update button does not justify installing firmware for another model or region.

Read the update information and follow the application’s prompts. - After Smart Switch reports completion and the phone restarts, open Settings > About phone > Software information to review the installed software. On a tablet, use About tablet.

Confirm that the phone starts normally and Smart Switch no longer reports a failed update.
If the update completes and the phone works normally, make a fresh backup.
If Windows still cannot see an unlocked phone, review the Android USB connection checks. Those checks require normal Android operation.
If Smart Switch Still Cannot Recover the Device
Contact Samsung support with the exact model, the error photo, the stage at which the update stopped, and any recovery code. Explain whether the phone starts normally and whether Smart Switch lists it for recovery.
If the device still fails to start and recovery is unavailable or unsuccessful, it needs model-specific service assessment. Discuss possible data loss before authorizing a software reflash or reset. A factory reset is not a substitute for restoring an incomplete firmware installation.
