Fix: “Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine”

“Sorry, the application cannot run under a virtual machine” appears when a game or protected app refuses to start because Windows looks virtualized to its environment check.

The app may be checking for a real VM. On a normal physical PC, the same check can also react to Hyper-V, virtualization-based security, a VM-looking computer name, or old virtual-machine identifiers.

The message is easy to misread because the PC may not be running inside VMware, VirtualBox, Hyper-V, or a cloud desktop at all.

Many older games, launchers, jailbreak tools, and anti-tamper systems only see the signals Windows exposes, not the full story of your hardware.

If you are actually launching the app inside a virtual machine, the clean answer is to run it on a physical PC or ask the developer whether VM use is supported.

The fixes below are for false detection on a normal Windows PC, not for hiding a real VM from software that intentionally blocks it.

1. Confirm the PC Is Physical and Check Only Clear VM Leftovers

Before changing Windows features, make sure the app is not right about the environment.

Microsoft says System Information can show hardware, system, and software details that help diagnose this kind of mismatch.

Launch checks can fail when a copied image, old VM tool, or imported system profile leaves virtual hardware names behind on a physical PC. This check helps separate those stale labels from Windows settings that only look virtualized.

Do not use Registry Editor when System Information already shows your real PC maker and model.

Registry cleanup only makes sense when a physical PC still exposes obvious VM vendor strings such as VirtualBox, VMware, or QEMU. If the hardware details already show your real manufacturer and model, leave the registry alone and use the Hyper-V checks below.

Registry edits can damage Windows if the wrong value is changed. Microsoft recommends exporting the key first from Registry Editor with File > Export. Only change values you can clearly identify as stale VM leftovers.
  1. Press Win + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter.
  2. Check System Manufacturer and System Model. If they show your real PC maker, do not search the registry for random values.
  3. If the physical PC shows an old VM vendor string, press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  4. Select the key you plan to inspect, then use File > Export to save a backup before editing.
  5. Look only for clear stale references to virtualization vendors, such as VirtualBox, VMware, or QEMU.
  6. Remove or correct a value only when you know it is a leftover and not valid hardware information.
  7. Restart Windows and launch the app again.

2. Disable Hyper-V and Related Windows Virtualization Features

A normal Windows PC can still expose a hypervisor even when no VM window is open.

Microsoft documents this exact check in System Information: when Hyper-V is active, Windows can report that a hypervisor has been detected.

Turning off Hyper-V-related features removes the strongest VM-like signal for many older games and protected apps.

This helps because the app no longer sees Windows presenting the same hypervisor signal that real virtual machines also expose.

The tradeoff is: WSL 2, Docker Desktop, Android emulators, Windows Sandbox, and Hyper-V virtual machines may stop working until you turn the features back on.

On a work or school PC, do not change these settings unless IT allows it. They may be required by device policy, security tooling, or development software.

  1. Open the Start menu and search for Turn Windows features on or off.
  2. Uncheck Hyper-V, Virtual Machine Platform, Windows Hypervisor Platform, and Windows Sandbox if they are enabled.
  3. Click OK and let Windows apply the changes.
  4. Restart your PC.
  5. Open System Information again and check whether Windows still says a hypervisor has been detected.
  6. Launch the app again.

3. Change a VM-Looking Computer Name

Some older launch checks also look at the computer name. A default name like DESKTOP-7H3K9Q does not prove the PC is virtual, but user reports around this exact error show that certain games have treated those names as suspicious.

This is a low-risk cleanup step compared with registry editing or disabling security features. It is not worth doing if your PC already has a normal, personal, or manufacturer-style name.

  1. Open Settings and go to System.
  2. Select About.
  3. Click Rename this PC.
  4. Enter a simple name such as Ahmed-PC, Gaming-PC, or another unique name that does not look auto-generated or VM-related.
  5. Restart the computer when Windows asks.
  6. Launch the app again after the restart.

4. Test Memory Integrity Only Long Enough to Confirm the Trigger

Memory Integrity is not a virtual machine.

Microsoft explains that Core isolation protects Windows processes by running them in a virtualized environment.

Some older anti-tamper checks fail when that protection makes Windows look virtualized before the app can open.

This setting is a real security protection, so treat this as a temporary test first. If the app only works with Memory Integrity off, decide whether that app is worth the security tradeoff and turn the setting back on when you are done testing.

Turning off Memory Integrity reduces one layer of Windows protection. Use this as a controlled test, restart afterward, and turn it back on if the app still shows the same VM message.

Do not use this on a managed work or school PC unless your administrator approves the change.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Device Security.
  3. Click Core Isolation Details.
  4. Turn off Memory Integrity.
  5. Restart your PC.
  6. Launch the app again.

5. Verify or Reinstall the Game Files

When the Windows-side signals are clean, the remaining problem may be the game or app install itself. Corrupted anti-tamper, launcher, or configuration files can make the environment check fail with the wrong message.

Verification helps because it rebuilds missing or damaged local files without changing more Windows security settings.

Steam’s official Verify integrity of game files option checks the installed files and replaces missing or damaged ones. Other launchers usually have a similar Verify, Repair, or Manage option.

This is safer than reinstalling the whole game immediately, especially when only one title shows the virtual-machine error.

Do not reinstall several unrelated games for this message. Repair the affected app first.

Do not use this as the first fix when every protected app on the PC shows the same VM warning.

  1. Open your game launcher, such as Steam or Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Go to the game’s Library page.
  3. Open its Properties or Manage menu.
  4. Choose Verify Integrity of Game Files, Verify, or the equivalent repair option.
  5. Let the scan finish, then launch the game again.
  6. If verification does not help, uninstall and reinstall the affected app once from its official launcher or developer page.

If the Error Still Appears

If the same message survives on a physical PC after Hyper-V, Memory Integrity, the computer name, and the game files are all clean, stop changing Windows security settings blindly.

At that point the app may be intentionally blocking your hardware, your Windows build, a sandbox/security product, or a configuration the developer has decided not to support.

Send the developer your Windows version, app/game version, whether System Information says a hypervisor is detected, and which Windows virtualization features are enabled. That gives support a cleaner case than another round of registry edits.
