Fix: Office Home & Student 2021 License Not Detected
Office Home & Student 2021 can remain installed on Windows while Word or Excel shows Unlicensed Product. The software is present, but Office cannot match it to a valid one-time license.

The same mismatch can remove the product from Services & subscriptions or make File > Account name Microsoft 365 or another edition. Reinstalling the same package cannot recover a license attached to another account, and a redeemed key cannot be redeemed again.
Office Home & Student 2021 reaches the PC in two main ways. A retail key is normally associated with a Microsoft account.
Some copies included with a new PC are recovered from the Microsoft Store on that original device. Match the symptom below to the record that needs attention.
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Home & Student 2021 appears under Services & subscriptions, but Word is unlicensed | Use that same account in Office, then correct the installed license or repair the apps. |
| The product is absent, and you still have an unused 25-character key | Redeem the key once at Microsoft’s setup page. |
| The key says it has already been used | Recover the Microsoft account that originally redeemed it; do not keep entering the key. |
| Office came with the PC and no key was supplied | Check the Microsoft Store library on the original PC for the included Office installer. |
| File > Account names Microsoft 365 or another edition | Switch to the Home & Student 2021 license or remove the conflicting trial or edition. |
| The message appeared after a motherboard replacement or move to another PC | Apply the transfer rules for retail Office, or recover the preinstalled license through the PC manufacturer. |
1. Check the Account or Device That Owns Office 2021
Office can be installed under one Windows profile while its license belongs to a different Microsoft account. A work or school sign-in can also become the active Office identity even though a personal account owns Home & Student 2021.
Do not change the installation unless this check first confirms ownership. It separates a missing account or device license from an installation that merely cannot read a valid record.
- Open Microsoft’s Services & subscriptions page and sign in with the personal Microsoft account used when Office was bought or first activated.

Once Office Home and Student 2021 is redeemed the Microsoft account becomes the real license anchor so this page is the first place to verify ownership. - Look for Office Home & Student 2021 and an Install or similar management option. A one-time purchase does not need an active Microsoft 365 subscription.
- If it is missing, check every personal Microsoft account that may have been used. Microsoft’s account-finding guidance can help if the original address is uncertain.
- Open Word and select File > Account. Under Product Information, check the address shown after Belongs to. If it is not the owning account, sign out and sign back in with the correct one.
- If no account lists the product, confirm how Office was supplied. A retail package may have an unused key; a keyless copy bundled with a PC may instead be stored in the Microsoft Store library on that original computer.

If Office Home and Student 2021 was never redeemed on the right account the PC cannot detect a license that is not attached anywhere yet.
If the product appears on the account page, ownership is intact; continue below with the edition shown in File > Account. If no account shows it, use an unused retail key once or recover a bundled copy from the original PC.
2. Use an Unused Key Once and Read the Exact Error
This section applies only if a retail key has never been redeemed. Redemption works because it associates the key with a Microsoft account; after that, the account replaces the key for routine reinstalls.
- Go to Microsoft365.com/setup, sign in with the personal account that should own Office, and enter the 25-character key only if it has never been redeemed.

Redeem the key only on the account that should own the license - When setup finishes, return to Services & subscriptions and confirm that Home & Student 2021 now appears.
- If Microsoft says This product key has already been used, the key is already attached to an account. Recover that account instead of trying to redeem the key again.
- For INVALID_PRODUCT_KEY or ERR_INVALID_TOKEN, check the typing and confirm that the key is for Office, not Windows or a volume-license edition.
Microsoft explains these messages in its Office product-key error guide. - If the message is KEY_NOT_ACTIVATED, the retailer did not activate the card at the point of sale. Return there with the key and proof of purchase. The seller must also resolve a blocked or mis-sold third-party key.

If the key itself never attaches to the Microsoft account there is no local Office fix that can make the license appear afterward.
If Home & Student 2021 appears on the intended account, the license record is valid; continue below with the installed edition. If the key still fails or remains inactive, stop changing Windows and resolve the sale with the retailer.
3. Remove Conflicting Copies and Switch to Home & Student 2021
Do not remove another edition unless the account already owns Home & Student 2021.
This mismatch happens when the apps still read a Microsoft 365 trial, an old work or school license, or another edition. Switch License forces Office to load the product owned by the signed-in account.
- Open Word or Excel and go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Switch License, then sign in with the account that lists Home & Student 2021. If the button is absent, select Update Options > Update Now, reopen the app, and check again.
- Close all Office apps when prompted so Office can install the components that match the selected license.
- If the wrong edition remains, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Remove only the unused Office trial or duplicate edition, then restart Windows.

A valid Home and Student 2021 license can still look missing if Windows is prioritizing another Office edition or leftover trial first. - Open Word again, sign in with the owning account, and recheck Product Information.

This screen tells you whether Windows is finally seeing Home and Student 2021 or is still stuck on the wrong Office edition.
If Product Information now names Home & Student 2021, open and edit a document before changing anything else. If the correct edition still says Unlicensed Product, continue below with repair.
4. Repair or Reinstall Office From the Source That Owns the License
Do not use repair until the license has been found. Repair works because it replaces damaged Office files and registration data, but it cannot create ownership missing from the Microsoft account or original PC.
If Word or Excel closes with has run into an error, use this separate Word and Excel repair guide. That is an app-startup failure, not only a missing license.
- Close every Office app. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Office, select Modify, and run Quick Repair. If the license is still not detected, run Online Repair, which downloads a broader replacement of the Office installation.

If the license exists on the account but Office cannot read it locally the repair path is the fastest way to rebuild the damaged activation state. - If Online Repair does not help, use Microsoft’s Office uninstall troubleshooter, then restart the PC. Removing Office does not delete your documents.
- Reinstall a redeemed retail copy from Services & subscriptions while signed in to its owning account.
For a keyless copy included with the PC, follow Microsoft’s Microsoft Store Library reinstall steps on that original computer.
Reinstalling from the owning account or bundled Store path keeps the Office build aligned with the real Home and Student 2021 license. - Open Word, accept the license agreement if shown, sign in with the owning account when asked, and check File > Account again.
If Microsoft Store cannot open or install any app, fix that separate problem with the Microsoft Store troubleshooting guide before repeating the bundled Office download.
If the correct edition appears and works after repair or reinstall, damaged local Office data caused the mismatch. If it still fails after a hardware change or a move to another PC, continue below to check the license type. Otherwise, use Get Help.
5. Check the License Type After a Hardware Change or Move
Skip this section unless the message followed a motherboard replacement, Windows reinstall, or move to another PC. Those changes can break the device match, and checking the license type confirms whether Office may move or must stay with the original device.
A stand-alone retail copy can move to another computer you own, but it may be installed on only one computer at a time. Microsoft limits transfers to once every 90 days, except after hardware failure.
A preinstalled copy stays with its licensed device and can move to another person only with that device.
- Check the receipt, packaging, Microsoft account record, or PC invoice to confirm whether the license was retail or preinstalled.
- For a retail transfer, uninstall Office from the old computer, then install it on the replacement PC from the owning account’s Services & subscriptions page.
- Open Word and complete the Activation Wizard. If online activation reports that the activation limit has been reached, use Activate by telephone when the wizard offers it and follow Microsoft’s instructions.

A one-time Office license can stop detecting cleanly after a major hardware change or transfer until the activation wizard finishes the move properly. - For a preinstalled copy after Windows was reinstalled on the same PC, use the Microsoft Store Library. If it is missing after a motherboard replacement, contact the PC manufacturer with the invoice and repair record. Another sign-in cannot turn it into a retail license.
Microsoft keeps its current retail procedure in the official Office license-transfer guide. If the wizard activates Office, the device match caused the failure. If it still rejects a permitted transfer, continue below with Get Help and proof of purchase.
6. Use Get Help and Send Support the Ownership Evidence
Do not use this as a substitute for finding the owning account or resolving an invalid key. After those records are clear, Get Help confirms whether the remaining failure is in Office setup or activation rather than another reinstall.
- Open Microsoft’s Unlicensed Product and activation guide on the affected PC. Under its activation section, choose Office 2024, Office 2021, Office 2019 and Office 2016, then follow the version-specific checks or guided support it offers.

Once the account and redemption steps are clear the Get Help troubleshooter is the fastest official way to test the remaining activation paths. - If the license still is not detected, open Microsoft Support. Provide the Office edition, exact error, purchase source and date, order number, the account being checked, and screenshots of Services & subscriptions and File > Account.
- Use the retailer for KEY_NOT_ACTIVATED or a blocked seller key. Use the PC manufacturer when a bundled copy is absent from the original device. Use Microsoft when the product is visible on the correct account but the apps still reject it.
If Office works normally and File > Account names Office Home & Student 2021 without the Unlicensed Product banner, the license is restored. Further license switching or reinstalling can reintroduce the conflict.
