Fix: Minecraft Launcher Not Downloading from Microsoft Store

Minecraft Launcher can stop before Windows downloads anything useful. In Microsoft Store, the button may sit on Pending, Starting download, or Acquiring license.

Sometimes the screen shows the launcher as installed, then the game files inside it refuse to download or the progress bar freezes with no useful error.

That screen means the download is not only moving slowly. Windows is still trying to finish one of the pieces behind the launcher install.

The stuck piece may be the Store package, Store cache, Microsoft/Xbox sign-in, license check, temporary install files, or secure connection Windows uses to validate the request.

The best clue is where it gets stuck. A Store listing stuck before installation is different from a launcher that opens and then cannot fetch game files, and both are different from a PC where every Store or Xbox download is failing.

If the same PC cannot download any Store app or Xbox game, check the official Xbox Status page once before changing more settings. A service problem will not be fixed by resetting the launcher repeatedly.

1. Repair Microsoft Store and Reset Its Cache

When the Store package is stuck, the launcher stops before Minecraft itself ever gets involved.

Minecraft’s installation troubleshooting points users back to Store sign-in and Store reset steps when the Windows launcher will not install.

Microsoft’s Store app troubleshooting also starts with Store updates, Windows updates, and app repair/reset.

Repair helps because it refreshes the Store package without clearing local app data. Avoid this if the Store is restricted by work or school policy; an administrator may need to allow the install.

1. Close Microsoft Store, the Xbox app, and Minecraft Launcher, then press Win + I.
2. Go to Apps > Installed apps or Apps & features.
   
3. Search for Microsoft Store and open its Advanced options.
   
4. Select Repair, then try downloading Minecraft Launcher again.
   
5. If the download still does not start, return to the same page and select Reset.
   
6. If Microsoft Store still opens badly, press Win + R, type wsreset.exe, and press Enter. Microsoft says the Store should reopen automatically after the cache reset finishes.
7. Restart the PC, open Microsoft Store, and try the launcher download again.

If the launcher works now, the Store package or cache was holding the request. If it still stops at the same point, continue to the next method below and clear the temporary install files Windows may be reusing.

2. Clear Temporary Install Files

This cleanup helps when a previous launcher attempt leaves partial files in Windows temporary folders. The next attempt may look fresh in the Store, but Windows can still reuse broken temporary data.

Deleting those files forces Windows to build fresh install data for the next attempt. This cleanup only targets temporary Windows files.

Avoid this if the Store has not reached an actual download attempt yet. It does not fix account, license, or policy blocks, and it does not delete Minecraft worlds, saves, resource packs, or normal Minecraft profile folders.

1. Press Win + R, type %temp%, and press Enter.
   
2. Press Ctrl + A and delete the files Windows allows.
3. If Windows says a file is in use, skip it and continue with the rest.
   
4. Press Win + R again, type temp, and press Enter.
   
5. Delete the files Windows allows from that folder as well.
   
6. Restart Windows before trying the launcher download again.

If the progress bar moves past the old stop point, the failed install was being replayed from temporary data. If the Store still cannot validate or begin the download, continue to the next method below and correct the Windows time and update state.

3. Correct the Time, Region, and Windows Update State

Acquiring license and blank Store download failures often happen before any large Minecraft file is transferred. At that stage, Windows is validating the request against Microsoft services.

A wrong time, wrong region, or outdated Store component can break that validation even when the browser still opens websites.

Microsoft’s Store guidance for launch problems specifically calls out time and location settings, and its Windows Update guidance says to install available updates and restart when prompted.

This is not needed when the clock, region, Windows Update, and Store updates are already current, and the download only fails after account prompts. In that case, use the account-session check below.

1. Right-click the clock on the taskbar and select Adjust date and time.
   
2. Turn on Set time automatically.
3. Turn on Set time zone automatically, or choose the correct time zone manually.
4. Select Sync now if that option appears.
   
5. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install anything pending, and restart if Windows asks.
6. Open Microsoft Store > Library and select Get updates. Microsoft’s Store update guidance says app and game updates are handled from that Library screen.
7. Try downloading Minecraft Launcher again.

If the download works after the time sync or updates, Windows was failing the Store validation step. If the Store is current but Minecraft still fails around account or ownership, continue to the next method below and refresh the account session.

4. Refresh the Microsoft Store and Xbox Account Session

The Store can open normally while one account-tied download still fails. This happens when the Store session, Xbox app session, or Minecraft ownership check no longer agrees with the account trying to install the launcher.

Minecraft Launcher uses Microsoft and Xbox services for ownership and launcher access, so a stale Store session or the wrong signed-in account can block only the Minecraft request.

Minecraft’s installation troubleshooting tells users to make sure they are signed in to Microsoft Store. A clean sign-out and sign-in forces the Store to request fresh account and license data instead of reusing the old token.

This is not needed when every Store download fails for every account. That points to Store health, Windows Update, network policy, or a broader Xbox service issue before Minecraft Launcher itself.

1. Open Microsoft Store.
2. Select your profile icon in the top-right corner.
3. Select Sign out.
   
4. Close Microsoft Store completely.
5. Open it again, select the profile icon, and choose Sign in.
   
6. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft, has the active Game Pass access, or is meant to install the launcher on this PC.
7. If the Xbox app is installed, open it and sign in with the same gaming account.
8. Return to the Minecraft Launcher listing and try the download again.

If the launcher works after signing back in, the old Store or Xbox account token was the problem. If it still will not download, continue to the next method below.

5. Use the Official Minecraft.net Download

Minecraft officially offers the Windows launcher through both Microsoft Store and the Minecraft download page.

If Microsoft Store is still stuck after the Store, cache, update, and account checks, the website installer separates a Store-specific problem from a wider Windows download problem.

Do not use a third-party rehosted installer for this test. Stay on Minecraft.net so the result actually proves whether an official non-Store route works.

1. Open your browser and go to the official Minecraft download page.
2. Download the Minecraft Launcher installer for Windows.
   
3. When the file finishes downloading, double-click the installer.
4. Follow the on-screen steps to install the launcher.
5. Open the launcher and sign in with the same Microsoft account you use for Minecraft.

If the Minecraft.net installer works, the issue was limited to Microsoft Store or the Xbox app download path. Keep the launcher installed from the official source and only return to Store repair if other Store apps are also affected.

If neither official route downloads, collect the exact Store message, installer error, Windows version, Microsoft account used in Store/Xbox, and whether other Store downloads fail. Send that to Minecraft Support or Microsoft Support instead of repeating Store resets.
