Fix: Controller/Gamepad Not Working in Resident Evil Requiem

Resident Evil Requiem can ignore a controller on PC even while Windows or Steam says the controller is connected.

The usual signs are simple: the menu will not move, button presses are missed, the game shows Xbox prompts for a PlayStation controller, or one press acts like two.

That does not always mean the controller is broken. On PC, the game can receive input directly, through Steam Input, or through a virtual controller created by tools such as DS4Windows, DSX, or reWASD.

If two of those systems are active at the same time, Resident Evil Requiem may listen to the wrong device or receive duplicate input.

Game updates also matter for PlayStation controllers, because native DualSense behavior and Steam Input behavior are not the same thing. Steam Input can make an ignored controller work, but it can also turn it into an Xbox-style controller from the game’s point of view.

The controller works in Steam, but Resident Evil Requiem ignores it. Compare Enable Steam Input and Disable Steam Input for this game only.
Buttons work, but the game shows Xbox icons on a PlayStation controller. Do not treat this as a detection failure. Steam Input may be translating the controller as XInput.

1. Compare Steam Input On and Off for Resident Evil Requiem

Steam Input controls whether Steam translates your controller before Resident Evil Requiem receives it. That translation can make a PlayStation, Switch, or generic controller work in a game that expects another input format.

It can also get in the way when the game already reads the controller directly. Players have reported both results, so the useful test is not permanently turning Steam Input on or off. It is comparing both states cleanly.

Make this a clean per-game test. Keep controller mappers closed, change only Resident Evil Requiem’s override, then fully relaunch the game after each change.

  1. Let Steam install any pending Resident Evil Requiem update, then restart Steam.
  2. Close DS4Windows, DSX, DualSenseX, reWASD, handheld-controller utilities, and similar mapping tools.
  3. Open Steam > Library, right-click Resident Evil Requiem, and select Properties.
  4. Open Controller and set the override to Enable Steam Input.
  5. Launch the game and test menu movement, both sticks, face buttons, triggers, and pause input. Close the game after the test.
  6. If the controller is still ignored, doubled, or badly mapped, return to the same Properties page.
  7. Set the override to Disable Steam Input so the game tries its native controller support.
  8. Relaunch Resident Evil Requiem and repeat the same input test.

Keep the mode that works. If the controller works but only the icons are wrong, open the game’s Options menu and look for a controller Button Icon Type or prompt-style setting before changing the input mode again.

If both Steam Input modes fail, leave third-party mappers closed and confirm that Steam is seeing the right controller.

2. Confirm Steam Detects the Controller You Are Actually Using

Resident Evil Requiem cannot use a controller that Steam is not receiving properly. Steam’s controller page also reveals a common PC problem: the active controller may be a virtual Xbox pad, an old Bluetooth entry, or a different device plugged into the same system.

  1. Open Steam, select Steam in the top-left corner, and open Settings.
  2. Select Controller.
  3. Choose the controller you intend to use and confirm that Steam reacts when you press buttons or move the sticks.
  4. If Steam shows more than one controller, disconnect everything except the main controller for this test.
  5. Close Resident Evil Requiem completely, reopen it, and test the controller again.

If Steam now sees the right controller and the game still ignores it, remove duplicate input from extra devices or mapping software.

3. Remove Extra Controllers and Virtual Input Tools

PC games can pick the first available gamepad device, and that device is not always the controller in your hands. Racing wheels, HOTAS setups, fight sticks, handheld-controller drivers, capture remotes, and virtual Xbox pads can all crowd the same input list.

This cleanup is especially important when input is doubled. That usually means Resident Evil Requiem is seeing both the real controller and an emulated controller at the same time.

Run only one controller translation tool at a time. Steam Input, DS4Windows, DSX/DualSenseX, reWASD, and similar tools can create duplicate controllers when stacked together.
  1. Close Resident Evil Requiem and exit Steam.
  2. Quit DS4Windows, DSX, DualSenseX, reWASD, and any other remapping utility from the system tray or Task Manager.
  3. Disconnect extra controllers, racing wheels, pedals, flight sticks, fight sticks, USB dongles, and unused wireless receivers.
  4. Reconnect only the controller you want to use.
  5. Open Steam and repeat the Steam Input comparison from Method 1 with this single-controller setup.

If the game responds after the cleanup, reconnect the other devices one at a time until the conflict returns. If the single controller still fails, test the connection without Bluetooth.

4. Test a Direct USB Connection Before Troubleshooting Bluetooth

Bluetooth can make the controller look connected while still giving the game an unreliable input device. Battery state, old pairings, adapter drivers, weak signal, and controller firmware can all affect wireless behavior before Resident Evil Requiem receives input.

A wired test bypasses most of that wireless chain. Use a cable that carries data, not a charge-only cable.

  1. Disconnect the controller from its current Bluetooth session.
  2. Connect it directly to the PC with a known data-capable USB cable. Avoid docks and unpowered hubs for this test.
  3. Wait for Windows to detect it, then confirm it appears under Steam > Settings > Controller.
  4. Keep mappers closed, launch Resident Evil Requiem, and test input in the menu and during gameplay.

If USB works but Bluetooth does not, keep using USB while you update firmware and rebuild the wireless pairing. If Windows cannot keep Bluetooth controllers connected generally, fix that outside the game before treating Resident Evil Requiem as the problem.

5. Use an XInput Wrapper Only After Native Input and Steam Input Fail

An XInput wrapper makes a PlayStation controller appear to Windows and the game as an Xbox-style controller. That can help when Resident Evil Requiem refuses the original device but accepts standard XInput.

This should be a fallback, not the first setup. If Steam Input or native input already works, adding another wrapper can bring back duplicate input.

  1. Close Resident Evil Requiem and Steam.
  2. Install one trusted wrapper, such as DS4Windows or DSX/DualSenseX, from its official project page or store listing.
  3. Connect the PlayStation controller by USB for the first test.
  4. Enable its Xbox or XInput virtual-controller output.
  5. Reopen Steam and set Resident Evil Requiem’s controller override to the mode that does not create duplicate inputs in your setup.
  6. Launch the game and test the main menu before loading a save.

If the wrapper works, keep the setup simple: one controller, one wrapper, and one Steam Input mode. If the game still ignores the controller, remove the wrapper from the test and update the controller firmware.

6. Update Controller Firmware and Rebuild the Wireless Pairing

Firmware updates can change how a controller reports itself over USB and Bluetooth. Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app updates DualSense and DualSense Edge firmware on Windows.

Microsoft points Xbox controller users to the Xbox controller firmware update process.

Capcom’s own Resident Evil Requiem troubleshooting also notes that some DualSense and DualShock features need a wired connection.

Treat vibration, adaptive-trigger behavior, light bar behavior, and motion features separately from basic button detection. If buttons and sticks already work, firmware may improve features, but it is not a reason to rebuild the whole controller setup.

  1. For a DualSense or DualSense Edge, open PlayStation Accessories on Windows, connect by USB, and install any offered firmware update.
  2. For an Xbox Wireless Controller, open the Xbox Accessories app or follow Microsoft’s firmware update steps.
  3. Install pending Windows updates and restart the PC.
  4. If only wireless mode fails, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, remove the controller, place it back in pairing mode, and add it again. Microsoft’s Windows controller page also outlines the normal Bluetooth pairing flow for Xbox controllers.
  5. Open Steam, confirm the controller reacts in Settings > Controller, then test Resident Evil Requiem again with one Steam Input mode at a time.

If Steam reads the controller but Resident Evil Requiem still ignores it through native input, Steam Input, direct USB, and a clean XInput fallback, send Capcom Support your controller model, connection type, firmware version, Steam Input mode, and whether the problem happens in the menu or only after loading gameplay.
