How to Fix Apex Legends Crashing in Ranked Mode?
Queueing for a ranked match in Apex Legends can sometimes make the game crash to your desktop or home screen, especially right after the match summary screen. Often, you’ll see a “code: tap” error, or the game might just close without any warning. This usually means there’s a problem with your game files or your graphics settings.

The main cause of this issue is Nvidia driver version 546.33 or later. Other possible causes include conflicts with Razer Chroma, Discord overlays, or damaged DirectX files. This problem happens only in ranked mode. Regular games are not affected, which can make it harder to identify or fix the issue.
In this article, we will discuss different ways to solve this error.
1. Check Minimum System Requirements
The first step is to make sure your PC meets the minimum system requirements for Apex Legends. If your hardware does not meet these requirements, the game may crash, especially when playing Ranked games.
Minimum Requirements
- OS: Windows 7 (64-bit)
- CPU: AMD FX-4350 4.2 GHz or Intel Core i3-6300 3.8GHz quad-core processor
- RAM: 6GB
- Hard Drive: 56 GB free space (minimum)
- GPU: Radeon HD 7730 or NVIDIA GeForce GT 640
- GPU RAM: 1 GB
Recommended Requirements
- OS: Windows 7 (64-bit)
- CPU: Intel i5 3570K processor or equivalent
- RAM: 8GB
- Hard Drive: 56 GB free space (minimum)
- GPU: AMD Radeon R9 290 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 970
- GPU RAM: 8GB
2. Verify the Game Files Integrity
Crashes can happen if your game files are missing, deleted, or corrupted. Most launchers offer a way to check and repair these files, so you don’t need to reinstall the entire game. This process will automatically download and replace any broken or missing files.
2.1 Verify the Integrity Of Game Files (Steam)
You can verify the integrity of game files on Steam. Steam will check your game files and re-download any that are missing or damaged.
- Restart your PC and then open Steam.
- Right-click on Apex Legends.
- From the drop-down menu, select Properties.
- Go to the Local Files tab.
Click on Verify integrity of game files. - Click on “Verify integrity of game files…” and wait while Steam checks your files.
Let Steam Verify the Files - It’s best not to do this at the same time as large downloads or scans, and avoid verifying files for multiple games at once.
2.2 Repair the Game Through The Origin Library
You can also repair the game through Origin, which is similar to Steam’s feature. It will check and fix any missing or corrupt files.
- Launch Origin.
- Go to the Game Library and find Apex Legends.
- Click the gear icon.
Click on the Repair option - Select Repair. Follow the steps provided by Origin.
3. Close Background Apps
If Apex Legends keeps crashing mid-game, make sure unnecessary background apps are closed. Some apps can use a lot of system resources or even conflict with Apex Legends. You should also check if your CPU is being overused — you can learn more here: Windows High CPU Usage.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager directly. Or press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and choose Task Manager.
Select Unnecessary Background Apps and Click on “End Task.” - Go to the Processes tab, select any app you don’t need running, and click End Task. Be careful not to end tasks unless you’re sure they’re unnecessary for Windows.
4. Reinstall The Game
If everything else fails, reinstalling Apex Legends often resolves crashing issues. The process depends on the platform or launcher you are using.
4.1 Windows
- Open the Control Panel and go to Uninstall a Program.
Right-click the game and uninstall it - Find Apex Legends in the list, right-click it, and choose Uninstall.
- Once uninstalled, reinstall the game from your chosen platform or launcher.
4.2. Origin
- Go to My Game Library in Origin.
Uninstall the Game Through Origin - Find Apex Legends, right-click on it, and select Uninstall.
- After uninstalling, go back to My Game Library, locate Apex Legends, and Download the game again.
4.3. Steam
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click on Apex Legends.
Find the game in Steam Library and uninstall it. - Hover over the Manage option and select Uninstall.
Click on the Uninstall Option - Return to your Library, find Apex Legends again, and click Install.
Reinstall the Game from Steam
4.4. Xbox
- On your Xbox, press the Xbox button to open Settings.
- Go to My Games and Apps and find Apex Legends.
Find the game in Microsoft Store and uninstall it. - Press the Menu button on your controller.
- Select Uninstall and wait for the process to finish.
- Go to the Microsoft Store and download Apex Legends again.
4.5. PlayStation
- Go to the Games tab and look for Apex Legends.
Search Apex Legends in the PlayStation Store and delete it. - Highlight the game and press the Options button on your controller.
- Select Uninstall, then go to the PlayStation Store, search for Apex Legends, and download it again.
5. Limit The Frame Rate
Another solution is to limit your frame rate. While this could reduce the game’s performance, it can make gameplay more stable and may prevent crashes.
- Go to your game library.
- Right-click on Apex Legends’ title.
- Select Game Properties.
Left-Click on Properties - Go to Advanced Launch Options.
Enter This Command in Launch Options - In the Command line arguments box, type +fps_max 60 (without quotes). You can try different values and see what works best for you.
6. Update Your Graphics Drivers
Outdated graphics drivers can cause lag, poor performance, or even crashes. Keeping your graphics drivers up to date is important.
- Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type “dxdiag” and press Enter.
Type “dxdiag” in the Run dialog box and press OK. - This opens a new window. Go to the Display tab to see which graphics card you have.
Find the Details of the Current Graphics Card You are Using - Visit your graphics card manufacturer’s website and download the latest drivers.
Download the latest Driver - Double-click the setup file to start the installation. Just follow the instructions — they are different for each manufacturer, but the installer will guide you.

7. Downgrade Your Graphics Drivers
Sometimes, new graphics drivers can be unstable or incompatible, causing crashes. If Apex Legends started crashing after a recent driver update, try going back to an older driver.
- Type “Device Manager” into the Windows search bar and open it.
- Click the arrow next to Display Adapters.
Downgrade the Graphics Driver - Select the graphics card you want to downgrade.
Click on the Roll Back Driver option - Go to the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver. If this button is greyed out, it means your computer doesn’t have a previous driver version stored. In this case, download a previous version manually from the manufacturer’s website and install it.
8. Disable Overclocking (If Applicable)
Unstable overclocking can cause Apex Legends and other games to crash. Consider resetting your hardware to default settings if you have made any changes for overclocking. Learn more about overclocking.
- Restart your PC, and during the boot process, press the key displayed to enter BIOS or UEFI settings.
Disable Overclocking in BIOS/UEFI - In BIOS or UEFI, find the Advanced or Performance section.
- Look for any overclocking option and disable it if enabled.
- Save your changes and confirm when prompted.
- Restart your PC to apply the changes.
Alternate Method
- In BIOS, search for CPU Core Ratio and set it to default.
- Check CPU core voltage settings. Only change this if you have altered it before; otherwise, leave it as is.
- Find “restore fail-safe defaults” and select it to return all settings to their original state.
- Check FSB frequency and make sure it’s back to default if you’ve changed it.
- Save your changes, exit BIOS, and reboot your PC.
9. Clean Boot Your PC
A clean boot helps you find out if background services or apps are causing Apex Legends to crash. This starts Windows with only the essentials running.
- Log in as an administrator. (If you don’t have one, you can create a new admin account.)
- Type “msconfig” in the search bar at the bottom of your screen.
Type “msconfig” in the search bar to find the System Configuration. - Click on System Configuration.
- Go to the Services tab, then check Hide all Microsoft services.
- Click Disable All, and then Apply.
- Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
- Under the Startup tab, disable every enabled program (note which ones you change).
- Close Task Manager, return to System Configuration, and select OK.
Turn Off the Low Priority Startup Apps - Reboot your PC. It will now start in a clean boot environment.
- Re-enable the non-Microsoft services one at a time and restart after each, to see which one causes the crash. If Apex Legends keeps crashing, try disabling a different service.
- When finished, go back to System Configuration, choose Normal Startup under the General tab, re-enable all services, and enable your startup apps again using Task Manager.
- Restart your PC.
