How to Fix Samsung Smart Switch Error While Updating Device Software?

Samsung’s “An error has occurred while updating the device software” warning appears when a failed software installation leaves the phone unable to start Android normally. Reconnecting the cable alone may not complete the interrupted installation.

The screen recommends Smart Switch, but its recovery function is not available for every setup. It may need a failed-update record from the original computer, so installing Smart Switch on a different PC does not necessarily make the phone appear.

Before Starting Recovery

Emergency recovery can erase the phone. Back up accessible data before accepting any reset. If the phone cannot unlock and contains irreplaceable files, ask Samsung about data preservation before proceeding. A recovery screen does not mean a new backup is possible.
  • Leave active installations connected. An unchanged percentage alone does not prove failure. Begin recovery after an explicit failure or when Smart Switch requests it, not during an ongoing installation.
  • Keep the computer powered, awake and connected to the internet. Charge a working phone before retrying, and follow the charge requirement displayed by Smart Switch.
  • Know the Google account already on the phone and its screen lock before accepting a reset. Google’s reset preparation guidance explains the sign-in requirements; a reset does not remove account protection.
  • Use Samsung’s desktop Smart Switch download options for a compatible Windows PC or Mac, not just the mobile transfer app. For a managed work or school device, involve its administrator.

1. Recover the Failed Update in Smart Switch

Smart Switch can restart a failed installation when it has a recovery entry for the device. Samsung’s Phone Recovery Guide begins on the computer where the update failed, not with a normal Backup or Restore operation.

  1. After the failed attempt has ended, disconnect the phone, close Smart Switch and reopen it on the original computer.
  2. Open More or the three-dot menu and select Emergency Software Recovery. Depending on the version, the label may include and Initialization or and Reset.

The wording and availability depend on the installed Smart Switch version.
  3. Check that the listed device is yours. Record any recovery code shown on the original computer privately before changing computers or reinstalling Smart Switch, then select that device’s recovery entry.

  4. Read the precautions and data-loss warning before confirming the recovery or reset action. Do not select another device or substitute its firmware.
  5. Reconnect when prompted. Follow the button sequence Smart Switch provides for your exact model, then select the displayed confirmation. A generic button combination may not match your phone.

Use the button sequence shown by Smart Switch for that device.
  6. Let the recovery software download and install. Keep the cable connected; do not use the phone, press restart combinations or close Smart Switch during installation.

Keep the computer powered and the cable connected until recovery finishes or reports a failure.
  7. Wait for the completion message and follow its disconnect instructions. Check that the phone reaches its normal unlock or setup screen, then back up its data once accessible.

If Recovery Fails on the Original Computer

A displayed recovery code lets another computer identify the failed update. The code comes from Smart Switch on the original computer, not the phone’s error screen. It is not the IMEI or serial number.

  1. Keep the code and install Smart Switch on another compatible computer.
  2. Open its emergency-recovery menu and select Emergency recovery using the recovery code or Emergency code recovery.
  3. Enter the code and follow the model-specific prompts. Samsung’s alternate-computer recovery instructions explicitly warn that this procedure includes a factory data reset. Continue only if you accept the data loss.

If There Is No Device or Recovery Code

An update installed directly on the phone may have no original computer recovery record. An empty list or unsupported-device message does not mean that entering the serial number, installing an older Smart Switch build or performing a separate factory reset will create one.

When the phone still cannot start and recovery is unavailable or repeatedly fails, stop before further resets and contact Samsung. Keep the error photo and any recovery details for support.

2. Restore the USB Connection if Android Still Opens

A phone that opens normally but leaves Smart Switch at Connecting may have a cable, permission or driver problem. These checks require an unlocked, working Android screen; they do not repair firmware from the emergency-error screen.

  1. Once no update is running, connect the unlocked phone directly to the computer with a known-working USB data cable. Try another port or data-capable cable if needed, rather than a hub.

A charging connection alone does not establish a working data connection.
  2. Allow any initial access prompt for your trusted computer. Swipe down the notification panel, tap the USB notification, and select Transferring files / Android Auto or the equivalent file-transfer option.

This setting is accessible only when Android starts and the device can be unlocked.
  3. If detection still fails, disconnect and restart the phone. In desktop Smart Switch, select More options > Reinstall device driver > Confirm where available. Restart the computer if requested, then reconnect.
  4. After reconnecting, accept any new Allow or Connect prompt for your trusted computer. Wait for Smart Switch to display the correct device.

Then check that the desktop application displays the correct device.
  5. Choose Backup before another update. Check the completion summary and save excluded or failed items separately. Our Smart Switch backup walkthrough shows the process.
  6. Select Update only if Smart Switch offers it for this device. Read the prompts, then leave the connection and computer undisturbed until the update finishes. An absent Update button is not a reason to install another model’s software.

Read the update information and follow the application’s prompts.
  7. After completion and restart, open Settings > About phone > Software information to review the installed software. Tablets use About tablet. Confirm normal startup and that Smart Switch no longer reports a failed update.

Verizon devices: their USB System updates mode is intended for Verizon’s updater, not Smart Switch. Select file transfer for the Smart Switch connection.

Samsung’s device-recognition instructions cover these connection controls. If an unlocked phone remains invisible to Windows, the USB and MTP connection checks offer further diagnosis. Do not apply those Android settings to a phone that cannot boot.

When Samsung Service Is Needed

Samsung’s failed-update guidance recommends service to reflash a device that cannot start normally after an update failure. A factory reset clears user data; it is not a substitute for reinstalling incomplete firmware.

Select your country on Samsung’s regional site, then open Support for local service options.

Provide the exact model, full error photo, failed-update stage, and whether Smart Switch lists the phone or provides a recovery code. Mention any manual firmware flashing before the error. Share identifiers only through official support channels.

Discuss data preservation before authorizing a reset or reflash. Recovery may require erasing the phone, and no software procedure can guarantee that inaccessible files will be preserved.
