How to Fix “Error: 42 Connection Lost” on Rocket League?

The error code 42 appears on the screen when your connection has been interrupted for some reason, like Rocket League servers might be experiencing some problem, you have a terrible internet connection that might be the culprit for this issue. It popups with an error message: “Your connection to the game has been lost“.

How to Fix Rocket League error code 42.

We had a looked into this and discovered more possible reasons why your game is losing the connection.

  • Packet Loss- The issue occurs when the transmitted data packets do not arrive at their destination, and the transferred data between the server and your computer is lost.
  • Latency Variance- If you have a high ping issue, the data generally takes milliseconds to transfer, but due to high ping, it can take more than 5 seconds to arrive, which can cause error code 42 means your game has lost the connection.
  • High Latency- High latency is known as “lag,” which means the computer takes a long time to send a bit of data to the remote server. High latency can also cause bottlenecks in communication and also might be the reason for error code 42.
  • Server issue- If the Rocket League servers have some problems, the error code 42 could appear on your console or PC. 
  • Unstable internet connection- If you have some problem with your internet connection then the error code 42 could appear on the screen. Make sure your internet is enough stable to run the game. You can check your internet speed to ensure that your internet is stable. 
  • Interference of the third-party antivirus- Antivirus can block the game ports that are used to contact the server to run the game properly.
  • Unwanted applications using high bandwidth of internet- Unwanted applications use high bandwidth of internet and if your internet is not stable enough to run the background applications then it can affect the gaming performance and also cause error code 42. 
  • Incorrect DNS settings- If you set up the DNS settings incorrectly, it might lead you to error code 42 because incorrect DNS settings can cause problems while playing games or even accessing websites on the internet. 
  • Incorrect Proxy settings- Incorrect proxy settings can also prevail over this issue because the IP address you entered into the proxy server may cause your internet to slow down which can lead you to error code 42.

Now we know the causes, let’s have a look into the potential solution.

Check the Server Status

Before getting into the solutions, we suggest you check the Rocket League server status from the official community or a website because sometimes the Rocket League server goes down. According to the Rocket league developers, the issue could occur when the servers are having some problems. For that reason, make sure to check the server status. If the servers are down, then wait until the servers get stable, but if it’s not, then move on to the other solutions that might help you resolve error code 42.

Check the Minimum Game Requirements

The low or end system specification can be the reason why your game loses the connection. According to the devs, if you do not meet the game’s minimum requirements, the error could occur because your game is not loading as fast as it should.

Check the minimum requirements of the Rocket League to ensure that there is no problem with your system specs. Below are the minimum game requirements. 

  • OSWindows 7 (64 bit) or Newer (64 bit) Windows OS. OSWindows 7 (64 bit) or Newer (64 bit) Windows OS.
  • Processor 2.5 GHz Dual-core. Processor3.0+ GHz Quad-core.
  • Memory4GB. Memory8GB.

Restart the Console and Game

The best common fix for error code 42 is to simply restart your console or your game because restarting the console or game fixes errors if they occur as a bug in the game. Generally, the Rocket League does not load correctly, and it can cause error code 42, so the best approach is to restart the game or console to ensure that the loading is not preventing you from playing the game.

Enable Port Forwarding

In most cases, rocket league ports can be blocked by the Router. A router connects to your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Inside that Router, the ports, also known as gateways, protect you while browsing the internet. Sometimes those gateways block the program it should not, like Rocket League and other programs.

Every Router setting is a little different, but we will guide you similarly to the other Router settings. If you run into problems, try searching your Router support website for more detailed info on port forwarding.

Note- If your network is private then this method will not work for you you can check your network status from here. Rocket League must be running on your system when you performed port forwarding, so the port can be seen as open during the check.

Follow the below steps to enable the port forwarding:-

  1. First, press the Windows key and type the command prompt in the search bar.
  2. Open the command prompt and insert the below command then press enter.
    ipconfig
  3. Here you should see the default gateway and the IPV4 address.
  4. Copy the default gateway and paste it into your browser URL address bar to access the Route.

  5. It should take you to prompted with a popup window requesting your Username and Password.
  6. Once you are on the router configuration page, look for the Port Forwarding option.
  7. Click on Add entries option then paste the following Rocket league ports. 
    80 
    443

  8. Select TCP protocol and select HTTP as a common service Port.
  9. Once done click on the Save button to save the configurations.

  10. Now launch the Rocket league and check if the error persists.

Use Google Public DNS

If there is an indication that the error appears due to the default DNS server, then switching to the Google DNS will fix this error code 42.

DNS servers can boost gaming performance by blocking malicious data. It also allows users to enjoy a smooth gaming experience by preventing nasty viruses from running applications on Windows. There are some better DNS for better security. Still, when changing the DNS settings, we highly recommend you go for a Google DNS server because they provide better speed, reliability, and performance than others.

Follow the steps to use the Google DNS:-

  1. Press the Windows key and click on the gear icon which will take you to the Windows settings.
  2. Now click on the Network and Internet then click on the Change adapter option under the Advance network settings.

  3. Right-click on your connected network connection then select the Properties option.

  4. Select the Internet Protocol Version 6(TCP/IPv4) and click on the Properties option.

  5. Select Use the following DNS server addresses option and insert the following DNS server Ports.
    8.8.8.8

  6. Once done, press Ok and launch the Rocket league to check if the error persists.

Restart Your Router (Power cycle)

As we mentioned before, an unstable internet connection can cause error code 42. Doing a power cycle is a good place to start when you have an internet connection problem. A slow internet connection speed could happen when your router needs to reboot.

Rebooting the Router clears the device cache to keep the internet connections stable and allows the router or the modem to run more smoothly. Below are the steps that you can follow to power cycle your router.

  1. First of all, unplug the Power cable from the router and the modem.
  2. Wait for 15 seconds, then plug the Router and modem back into the power outlet.
  3. Again wait for 2 minutes, then power on your router and the modem.
  4. Wait for lights to be turned on, then test your internet on your PC by launching the Rocket League.

Reset Network Settings

Rocket league requires a stable internet connection to provide a better gaming experience to its players. Still, if you did some optimization with your network settings, you may not have a lousy internet because you change the network settings and have an error code 42.

The error also occurs if your internet adapters get corrupted for some reason. Resetting the Internet settings will install a new IP address and the new network adapters. It will also delete all the previous optimization or network settings.

If the error appears due to wrong network settings, resetting the network will resolve your issue. Below are the steps to reset your network settings.

  1. Press the Windows + I keys together to open the settings.
  2. Navigate to Network and Internet.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom, and click on Network reset option.

  4. In the next window, click on the Reset Now button. It will reinstall the network adapters and restart your computer for you.

  5. Once done, launch the Rocket league and check if the error persists. 

Use Ethernet instead Wifi (If possible)

There is no doubt the wifi connections have improved a lot, but for the accurate result or better gaming performance, we prefer to use an Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi. However, if you use a Wi-Fi connection, you might face problems like ping spikes and high latency when you play Rocket League. 

Add an Exclusion in Windows Defender

In most cases, the interference of the third-party software can prevent the game from running correctly, even though it can happen with the Windows defender. We can quickly fix this by including the Rocket league in the exclusion, which means when you add a file in the exclusion, the Windows defender will not scan and interfere again in the selected file.

Follow the steps to add a Rocket league in Windows defender.

  1. Press the Windows + I keys together to open the settings.
  2. Click on the Update & Security, then click on the Windows security option on the left pane.
  3. Select the Open Windows security option and click on Virus & threat protection.
  4. In the next Window, click on the Manage settings option.

  5. Scroll down to the Exclusions, and click on the Add or remove exclusions.
  6. Now click on Add an exclusion button and select the destination of Rocket league.

  7. Once done, launch the game and check if the error persists. 

Turn off Defender Realtime Protection

If adding a file or folder in exclusion did not work for you, your antivirus or Windows defender might be blocking the port, which is used to contact the Rocket League server. To ensure that your antivirus is not blocking the port, you can temporarily disable your antivirus software or the Windows defender to troubleshoot the issue.

Follow the steps to turn off the Windows Defender real-time protection.

  1. Press the Windows key and type settings in the search bar.
  2. Open the settings and click on the Update & security option.
  3. Select the Windows Security on the left sidebar, then click on the Open Windows security option.

  4. In the next popup Window, click on Virus and threat protection. 
  5. Click on the Manage settings and turn off the Real-time protection.

Note- If you are using the third-party antivirus software, temporarily disable your antivirus.

Modify the Compatibility settings

Running a program as an administrator privilege will give the full authority to the program to run smoothly. If your Windows is blocking some part of a game, running a Rocket league as an administrator will fix your issue. Also, modifying the compatibility settings will slightly increase the gaming performance.

Follow the mentioned steps to modify the compatibility settings:-   

  1. Go to the desktop and right-click on the Rocket league application.
  2. Select Properties then click on the compatibility tab.
  3. Here tick the Run this program as administrator and disable full-screen optimization.
  4. In the end, tick Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Make sure Windows 8 is selected in compatibility mode.
  6. Once done click on Apply button to save the changes.

Make sure you aren’t in a restricted region

There are many regions where the Rocket League server is restricted means that you cant play the game if the Rocket League is not available in your area.

Below are the regions where the Rocket league access is restricted:-

  • Crimea
  • Cuba
  • Iran
  • North Korea
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • China

Enable Proxy settings

If your internet speed is not good enough to run the game, you could use a proxy server as the last option. A proxy server allows the internet connection to speed up the performance and works as a gateway between the server and your system to hide your Ip address.

Using a proxy server might fix your error code 42. Below are the steps to enable the proxy server.

  1. Open the settings by pressing the Windows + I keys together.
  2. Click on the Network and Internet option.
  3. Click on Proxy on the left sidebar.
  4. Scroll down to the Manual proxy setup and click on the toggle button to enable the proxy.
  5. Here you have to enter the Ip address and Port number of the country. You can search on google for a proxy server. We used this IP address as an example.

  6. Once done click on the save button then launch the game to check if the error persists.
