How to Fix ‘PlayStation Network Sign-in: Failed Error on PS4 and PS5?

The PlayStation Network (PSN) Sign-In failure occurs when the console is unable to establish a connection with PSN. This often arises when network restrictions prevent your PSN account from signing in or if there is an issue with the network configuration that impedes a successful connection.

To troubleshoot this issue, you need to confirm an uninterrupted network connection to the PSN servers. The following methods will guide you through resolving this issue.

1. Sign in to PSN via Account Management

Begin by ensuring your PSN account is active when you encounter the Network Sign-in failed error message. The issue mainly occurs when the connection to the PlayStation network fails verification.

If the web servers disconnect your account for security reasons, reestablish a connection using the Account Management section as follows:

  1. Open the Settings menu.
  2. Navigate to Users and Accounts.

  3. Select the Sign In option in the Account tab.
  4. If two-factor authentication is enabled, enter the code sent to your registered device.
  5. Check if the problem has been resolved.

2. Check PlayStation Network Status

A network outage at PlayStation sometimes leads to sign-in issues. Confirm that the problem isn’t widespread by checking the PlayStation Network status. If there’s a network outage, all you can do is wait for the support team to address it.

Check the operational status of regional servers on the PlayStation Network Status website. If everything appears normal, proceed to the next method.

3. Check for System Updates

Outdated system software can cause the PSN connection to fail, as servers require users to have the latest updates installed.

To search for and install system updates:

  1. Access the Settings menu on your console.
  2. Select the System section.

  4. Select the listed update to download and install it.
  5. After installation, see if the issue has been fixed.

4. Change DNS Server

A malfunctioning DNS server may disrupt your connection to the PlayStation network. Fortunately, you can switch to reliable alternative DNS servers, such as those provided by Cloudflare or Google, to resolve connectivity issues.

Change the DNS server on your console:

  1. Go to the Settings screen.
  2. Select the Network option.

  4. Choose your network and select Advanced Settings.
  5. Change the DNS Settings from Automatic to Manual.

  6. Enter the following DNS addresses for Google or Cloudflare as Primary and Secondary DNS.
    Google: 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
    Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 1.0.0.1

  7. After entering the DNS addresses, click OK.
  8. Check to see if the sign-in issue is still occurring.

5. Reset Router

The PSN connection could also be failing due to issues with your own network, such as an IP address flagged by the system that prevents your console from connecting to the servers.

Reset your router to obtain a new IP address and clear any router cache that might be causing connection issues:

  1. Hold down the Reset button with a pin until the lights on your router flash.
  2. Release the button once the lights turn off and then on again.
  3. Wait for your PlayStation to reconnect and see if the issue persists.

6. Contact ISP

If none of the above methods resolve the issue, the problem may lie with your Internet Service Provider (ISP). While rare, ISP-related issues can block connectivity to certain services.

Reach out to your ISP to inform them of the connectivity issues you’re experiencing. They’re typically able to resolve the problem quickly. If your ISP isn’t at fault, seek support from the PlayStation official support team for further troubleshooting and assistance.

7. Rebuild PlayStation Database

A corrupted database can cause sign-in and other operational issues. Rebuild your PS4’s database using Safe Mode to clean up the data and possibly fix PSN sign-in issues.

  1. Power off your console completely.
  2. Press and hold the power button until you’ve heard two beeps to enter Safe Mode.
  3. Select “Rebuild Database” and allow the process to complete.

8. Factory Reset Your Console

As a last resort, a factory reset can resolve underlying problems by restoring your console to its original settings, but it will erase all data, including saved games, settings, and accounts.

  1. Back up your data if possible.
  2. Go to the “Initialization” tab in your console’s settings menu.
  3. Select “Initialize PS4” or “Initialize PS5” and follow the prompts to reset your console.
