Fix: Forza Horizon 6 Connection Error, Can’t Join Forza Servers, or Multiplayer Issues on PC
Forza Horizon 6 can load into the garage and run normally offline while every online action fails. Horizon Life may stay empty, a convoy may refuse to form, matchmaking may never complete, or the game may report that it cannot communicate with the server.

Online play uses a separate chain of checks. FH6 must reach the live Forza and Xbox services, obtain a valid Xbox session through Windows Gaming Services, and confirm that the account can use multiplayer.
The game must then establish a usable network route. Any failed check can produce a similar message even though FH6 still opens.
Reinstalling FH6 rarely fixes this by itself. The fastest approach is to identify whether the failure follows the service, the account, the PC, or the network, then repair only that part.
| What still works? | What the pattern usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Several players or devices fail at the same time | Xbox or Forza service incident, or a newly introduced game issue | Method 1 |
| FH6 opens, but Xbox sign-in or every online feature fails on this PC | Account session or Gaming Services problem | Method 2 |
| Only this Windows profile or PC fails | Stale Xbox identity data, a disabled service, or conflicting software | Method 3 |
| The message mentions restrictions, family settings, or multiplayer permission | Xbox privacy policy | Method 4 |
| The same PC works through a phone hotspot | VPN, router, or ISP route | Method 5 |
| Other devices work on the same router, but this PC does not | Local Windows network state | Method 6 |
1. Check the Live Forza Horizon 6 Services and Update the Game
An outage and a local fault can look identical inside the game. Checking the live services first prevents a long Windows repair when the same failure is already affecting other players.
The test should also be specific. If Horizon Life and matchmaking work but one invitation method fails, the connection is not generally down; the problem is limited to how that invite is being handed to the game.
Do not use a service incident as the explanation when the failure remains confined to one PC after the incident clears.
- Close FH6, then open the official Xbox Status page. Look for an incident involving sign-in, accounts, multiplayer, or gaming services.
- Check the official Forza Horizon 6 Feedback Portal for matching online, Horizon Life, matchmaking, or convoy reports.

If Xbox services or FH6 online systems are already having issues local Windows fixes will not restore multiplayer immediately. - Install every pending FH6 update in Steam or the Xbox app, restart the launcher, and test again.
- If the Steam client itself is offline or cannot authenticate other games, fix that separate problem with these Steam online checks before using FH6 as the test.

Checkpoint: If FH6 works after a listed incident clears or the game updates, the fault was outside the local Windows setup. If services are healthy and the failure remains limited to this PC or account, continue to Method 2.
2. Refresh the Xbox Session and Repair Gaming Services
Both the Xbox-app and Steam editions of FH6 use Microsoft Gaming Services on Windows. Steam can still open the game while that dependency is broken.
Online play fails when the Xbox session is stale, the wrong Microsoft account is active, or Gaming Services is below the version FH6 currently requires.
This works by renewing the Xbox session and repairing the Windows component FH6 uses to reach Xbox services. It does not touch game saves.
Skip this method if the error appears on several devices and Xbox or Forza already reports an incident.
- Close FH6, Steam or the Xbox app, Xbox Game Bar, and Microsoft Store.
- Open the Xbox app, sign out, then sign back in with the Microsoft account that owns the intended Xbox profile and FH6 progress.
- Press Windows + G, open the Game Bar account settings, and confirm that it shows the same gamertag.
- If you use the Xbox-app edition, make sure Microsoft Store is signed in with the account that owns the game or supplies its Game Pass entitlement.

Mixed Microsoft identities are a common reason FH6 can launch but fail when multiplayer or server authentication begins. - Open Microsoft Store > Downloads, select Check for updates, and update Gaming Services, the Xbox app, and Xbox Identity Provider if they appear.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Gaming Services > Advanced options. Compare its version with the current minimum in Forza Support’s requirement, not an older guide.

Forza Support requires an up-to-date Gaming Services component on PC including for Steam players. - If the version is current but Xbox components still fail, open the Xbox app, select your profile picture, choose Support, and run Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool.
- Restart Windows before testing one Horizon Life or convoy session.
If Gaming Services will not update and Microsoft Store shows 0x80073D26, handle that installation failure with this Gaming Services repair guide. Reinstalling FH6 will not repair a broken Windows gaming package.
The update and Repair controls do not remove FH6 saves, so no rollback is normally required. Checkpoint: If multiplayer returns, the Xbox session or Gaming Services caused the failure. If it still fails on this PC, continue to Method 3.
3. Rebuild the Local Xbox Identity State and Check for a PC-Side Conflict
Use this method only after Xbox.com and the Xbox app accept the account normally. It fits a single Windows PC that keeps failing while the same account works elsewhere.
Windows can retain an old Xbox token after a password, account, or gamertag change. Some FH6 players have also confirmed a narrower conflict involving NI Domains processes from National Instruments or sim-racing software. These are separate faults, so test one change at a time.
- Close FH6, Steam or the Xbox app, Xbox Game Bar, and Microsoft Store.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages, and press Enter. - Open the folder beginning with Microsoft.XboxIdentityProvider. If it is absent, skip this cache reset rather than creating the folder.
- Rename the AC folder to AC.old.

A damaged Xbox identity cache can let FH6 open normally while breaking the online sign-in handshake behind the scenes. - Restart Windows, sign back into the Xbox app, and test FH6. If nothing changes, leave AC.old in place until troubleshooting is complete.
- Press Windows + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Confirm that Gaming Services, Xbox Live Auth Manager, and Xbox Live Networking Service are not Disabled if they appear. Manual or Manual (Trigger Start) is normal. Start a listed service only if it is stopped and Windows offers Start.

If the Xbox networking or authentication services are stuck FH6 can keep reporting server or multiplayer errors until those services are restarted. - If Task Manager shows NI Domains or other clearly identified National Instruments processes installed with sim-racing hardware, end those processes for one test. Do not stop unrelated processes merely because their names begin with “NI.”
- If FH6 connects only while that software is closed, update or reinstall the associated National Instruments or hardware package rather than leaving unrelated services disabled.
Checkpoint: If a fresh Xbox session or closing NI software restores online play, the fault was local to this PC. If the failure follows one account instead, continue to Method 4 and check its multiplayer permissions.
4. Check Multiplayer Permission Only for an Account-Specific Restriction
Xbox checks privacy policy after sign-in. A family-managed or restricted account can therefore load FH6 and use offline features but still be refused because the account is not allowed to create a convoy or join multiplayer.
This permission check belongs only with messages about restrictions, family settings, multiplayer, or cross-network play. Do not use it for a plain server timeout.
- Sign in to the official Xbox Privacy & online safety page with the gamertag used inside FH6.
- Open the online-safety settings for Xbox and Windows devices.
- Set You can join multiplayer games and You can join cross-network play to Allow.
- If the controls are locked, ask the Microsoft Family organizer to review them. Do not change the account age or region to bypass family policy.

Multiplayer can fail even on a healthy PC if the account is not allowed to join multiplayer games or cross-network play. - Save the change, sign out of Xbox on the PC, sign back in, and test again.
Checkpoint: If multiplayer works after the policy refresh, the account restriction caused the failure. If both permissions were already allowed, leave them unchanged and continue to Method 5.
5. Test Whether the Failure Follows the Router, VPN, or ISP
A browser can work while FH6 fails because Horizon Life, convoys, and matchmaking use their own real-time connections.
Those sessions fail when a VPN, router filter, or ISP route mishandles their traffic. Testing the same PC on another trusted network separates that route from the PC.
Do not use this method to explain a failure that follows one Xbox account across otherwise working networks.
- Disconnect any VPN and turn off a manually configured Windows proxy for one controlled test.
- Restart the modem and router. Let the modem reconnect fully before powering the router back on.
- Connect the PC to a phone hotspot or another trusted internet connection, then test the same FH6 feature once.
- If the hotspot works, return to the normal network, update the router firmware from its manufacturer’s official support page, and confirm that UPnP is enabled and operating normally.
- If FH6 gives a specific NAT, IPsec, or Teredo message, record the complete wording for the router maker or ISP. Do not place the PC in a DMZ, disable Windows Firewall, or copy an old port-forwarding list.
Checkpoint: If FH6 works through the hotspot, the normal router or ISP route is the problem. If the hotspot also fails but other PCs work through the normal router, continue to Method 6 and repair the local Windows network state.
6. Repair the Windows Network Stack, Then Use Network Reset Last
Winsock, TCP/IP, DHCP, and DNS operate below FH6 and Gaming Services. This works by rebuilding local address assignment, name resolution, and socket state that can block the game’s online sessions.
Use this only after the account works, Xbox and Forza are online, and the same network works for another device. Do not use Network reset as a first response to one failed convoy invitation.
- Run the Network and Internet troubleshooter in the Windows 11 Get Help app.

If FH6 is the only thing failing on one PC it is worth proving whether Windows itself sees a local network problem before resetting adapters. - Open Command Prompt as administrator and run the commands below in order:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
- Restart Windows and test FH6 before making another change.
- If the PC still fails, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset, select Reset now, and confirm.

Network reset is the clean last solution for a single affected Windows PC after the outage account and router layers have already been ruled out. - Reconnect to the network and reinstall or reconfigure any VPN or virtual-network software removed by the reset.
Microsoft documents the troubleshooter, command sequence, and last-resort reset in its official Windows network guide.
Final checkpoint: If FH6 works after the command sequence or adapter reset, the local Windows network state caused the failure. Reapply only the VPN or virtual-adapter settings you still need.
If it still fails, submit the exact error through Forza’s Feedback Portal. Include which online features fail, the launcher used, and the FH6 and Gaming Services versions.
Also state whether another Xbox account or a phone hotspot works. Those details show whether the unresolved fault follows the service, account, PC, or network.
