How to Fix Find My Location Not Updating on iPhone?

An old pin in Find My is the last location Apple successfully received, not proof that the person, iPhone, or AirTag is still there. Until a newer report reaches Apple, the map keeps that pin and its timestamp.

The wording under the entry tells you more. Apple uses Not sharing location – Online when a device is connected but cannot provide its position, often because Location Services is unavailable.

Find My on iPhone showing a stale or not updating location while location-sharing settings are being checked.

No location found means Find My has no usable location to display. For a device or item, this also appears after more than seven days without a report through the Find My network.

The setting that needs attention depends on what you opened. A person in People, your own iPhone in Devices, and an AirTag in Items do not send updates in the same way.

What is staleWhat the old pin means
A pin sent in MessagesA dropped pin is a one-time snapshot and never follows movement. The sender must share an ongoing Live Location instead.
One person under PeopleTheir sharing iPhone has not sent a new position. They need to check sharing and Location Services on their phone; resetting yours will rarely help.
Your location is stale for everyoneYour Apple Account may be sharing from the wrong device, or your iPhone cannot send its current position.
An iPhone under DevicesThe target iPhone is offline, out of power, unable to use Location Services, or has not been detected by the Find My network.
An AirTag or accessory under ItemsThe timestamp is the last time a nearby Apple device detected it. An AirTag is not a live GPS tracker, so the viewing iPhone cannot force an update from a distance.
If the iPhone or item is actually missing: Enable Notify When Found and mark it as lost. Do not remove it from your Apple Account, because that removes the protection and tracking link.

1. Check the iPhone Actually Sharing Your Location

Find My can share your position from a different Apple device signed in to the same account. This often becomes noticeable after replacing an iPhone: the new phone works normally, but family members continue seeing the last place reported by the old one.

Make this check on the iPhone whose movement other people should see. Do not use it to change your own phone when only another person’s location is stale; ask that person to check their sharing device.

  1. Open Find My > Me and look beside Sharing From.
Find My Me tab on iPhone showing the Sharing From device for location sharing.
Apple still shows the active Sharing From device in Find My because your location may be coming from a different Apple device than you expected.
  2. If it names an old iPhone, iPad, or another device, tap Use This iPhone as My Location.
  3. Keep Share My Location turned on, then ask one trusted contact to refresh your entry under People.
  4. If you wear a GPS + Cellular Apple Watch, remember that it can become the sharing device while it is on your wrist and away from the paired iPhone.
Find My option on iPhone to use this iPhone as the device sharing the user's location.
If the wrong device is marked as your location source, Find My can keep showing an outdated or unexpected place even while the iPhone itself is fine.

If the pin updates after selecting this iPhone, the old sharing device was the cause. If it is still stale while Sharing From is correct, leave the source unchanged and continue below.

2. Enable the Setting for the Part of Find My That Is Stale

The People tab stops updating when Share My Location is off. The Devices tab depends on Find My iPhone, so one can remain stale while the other works.

Share My Location sends your position to people, while Find My iPhone allows your own device to appear and report through Find My.

Enabling the matching switch restores updates for the affected tab without changing unrelated sharing settings.

Do not use the device-finding switches to repair a People-only failure; match the switch to the tab that is stale.

  1. Open Settings > your name > Find My.
  2. If people cannot see you, turn on Share My Location.

If Share My Location is off, people in Find My are not supposed to receive fresh location updates from your iPhone
  3. If this iPhone is stale or missing under Devices, tap Find My iPhone, then turn on Find My iPhone and Find My network.
  4. Turn on Send Last Location if you want the iPhone to send a final position when its battery is critically low.
iPhone Find My iPhone settings showing Find My iPhone, Find My network, and Send Last Location enabled.
Apple’s current Find My setup still relies on these device-level toggles, not just the people-sharing switch in the main Find My screen.

For an AirTag or another Find My accessory, these iPhone switches cannot create a remote live update. Open Items, select the item, and enable Notify When Found. Its position changes when the Find My network detects it again.

If the affected entry updates after enabling its switch, no other reset is needed. If it is still stale, continue below to check whether the iPhone can produce and share a current position.

3. Restore Find My’s Access to the iPhone’s Location

An iPhone can remain online while Find My has no coordinates to send. Find My loses those coordinates when app-level or System Services access is disabled, even though messages and calls still work.

Maps isolates the issue because it requests the phone’s position independently of person-to-person sharing.

Do not use Reset Location & Privacy at this stage; first find out whether Maps can locate the phone normally.

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is on.
  2. Tap Find My, allow location access, and turn on Precise Location if the option appears.

Apple still treats Location Services as the basic permission layer for services that need your current place on the map.
  3. Return to the Location Services screen, scroll to System Services, and turn on Find My and Share My Location if either switch is shown and disabled.
  4. Open Maps, tap the current-location arrow, and see whether the blue marker reaches the iPhone’s actual position.
  5. If Maps is also stale, the iPhone has a wider location problem rather than a Find My-only failure.

If Maps cannot refresh your current location either, the stale Find My result is usually part of a broader location issue on the iPhone.

If Maps cannot place the phone correctly, our iPhone location-not-available guide addresses GPS accuracy and system-wide Location Services.

If Maps is accurate and Find My updates after the permission changes, stop here. If Find My is still stale, continue below to refresh its connection and sharing session.

4. Refresh the Network and Person-to-Person Share

The pin cannot move until a new report reaches Apple. A brief interruption can leave the previous location on screen even after Wi-Fi or cellular service returns.

Airplane Mode resets the network session, while recreating a People share replaces a connection that no longer updates.

Do not use the Share My Location toggle when only Devices or Items is stale; that switch controls what people see.

  1. Open Safari and load a new page to confirm that the iPhone sending the location has working internet access.
  2. If several people or devices stopped updating at the same time, check the Apple System Status page before changing more settings.
  3. Turn Airplane Mode on for about 15 seconds, turn it off, and wait for Wi-Fi or cellular service to return.
  4. Restart the iPhone, then reopen Find My.
iPhone checking Wi-Fi or cellular connection and restarting to fix a Find My location that is not updating.
Apple still ties current location updates to active connectivity, so a stale or interrupted connection can leave Find My behind.
  5. If your location is stale for everyone under People, open Settings > your name > Find My, turn Share My Location off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. Your location is hidden from everyone while the switch is off.

Turning Share My Location off and back on is the cleanest local refresh when the account should be sharing but the updates stay stale.
  6. If the problem affects only one contact, stop sharing with that person and start a new ongoing share from Find My > People or the Messages conversation. If you are trying to see their location, they must recreate the share from their iPhone.

If the location updates after the restart or new share, the old connection was stale.

If only one contact remains frozen, our share-location-unavailable guide covers contact-specific failures. If everyone still sees you in the old place, continue below with the final iPhone-side reset.

5. Update iOS and Rebuild Location Permissions

Use a permissions reset only after Maps can locate the iPhone and the Find My settings are correct. An iOS update replaces damaged system components, while Reset Location & Privacy rebuilds permission choices that may no longer be applying correctly.

A privacy reset is not needed when the stale entry belongs to another person’s phone or to an undetected AirTag. It does not erase photos or apps, but camera, microphone, contacts, and location prompts will return for every app.

  1. Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest iOS version available for the iPhone.
  2. After the restart, test Find My before resetting anything else.
  3. If the timestamp remains frozen, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy.
  4. Reopen Find My, allow location access when requested, and turn Share My Location back on if necessary.

Turning Share My Location off and back on is the cleanest local refresh when the account should be sharing but the updates stay stale.
A work or school Managed Apple Account cannot use Find My. Contact the administrator; resetting the iPhone will not enable it.

If Find My still shows the same timestamp after Maps is accurate, the correct iPhone is listed under Sharing From, and permissions have been rebuilt, contact Apple Support.

Include the exact status text and say whether it appears under People, Devices, or Items. That detail is more useful than reporting only that Find My is not updating.
