How to Fix FaceTime Waiting for Activation Error?

FaceTime’s “Waiting for activation” message can remain beside your number even while ordinary calls and mobile data work. The number is not ready to make or receive FaceTime calls yet; the warning does not necessarily mean the entire service is unavailable.

You may still be able to use FaceTime through your Apple Account email. Activating a phone number requires carrier SMS as well as an internet connection, so working Wi-Fi alone does not confirm that verification is complete. An unsuccessful attempt may instead show “Activation unsuccessful” or “An error occurred during activation”.

Open FaceTime settings at Settings > Apps > FaceTime. On older iOS versions, FaceTime and Messages appear directly in Settings.

1. Check Whether Apple Is Having a Service Problem

An outage can prevent activation even when your phone is configured correctly. Checking the status first avoids changing settings while Apple is repairing the service.

  1. Open Apple System Status and check FaceTime, iMessage, and Apple Account.

A service issue or regional FaceTime limitation can make local troubleshooting look broken.
  2. Open any reported issue for details. Retry after Apple marks it resolved.

FaceTime also has country, region, and carrier availability limits. If it has never worked where you live, confirm availability with Apple or your carrier. If status is normal, check the phone line next.

2. Make Sure Your Phone Line Can Send Activation SMS

A new SIM or number transfer can leave calls working before FaceTime verifies the number. The SIM or eSIM associated with that number must be active and able to send activation SMS.

  1. Turn off Airplane Mode and check that the phone has cellular service.iPhone Control Center showing Airplane Mode turned off before FaceTime activation.
  2. Connect to working Wi-Fi or cellular data. With two SIMs, open Settings > Cellular and make sure the line for your FaceTime number is turned on.
iPhone cellular data Wi-Fi and SMS test used before FaceTime activation.
Phone number activation can stay pending when normal data works but carrier SMS is not fully working.
  3. In Messages, check the compose field for SMS, not iMessage or RCS, then test sending and receiving. Green bubbles can be RCS too.
  4. Ask your carrier whether international SMS is enabled. Ordinary domestic texts working does not rule out an activation-message restriction. After a number transfer, have the carrier confirm that the transfer is complete.

On prepaid plans, check that your balance covers any activation SMS charge; an included texting allowance may not cover it. Accept the carrier-charge prompt when enabling FaceTime if you agree to the possible charge.

If ordinary texts also fail, resolve that first; the Message Blocking is Active guide applies when that exact warning appears. If SMS works but the number remains pending, check the time and restart activation once.

3. Check the Date and Time Zone

A wrong clock or time zone can interfere with activation. Correct the displayed time rather than changing the phone’s region to try to force FaceTime on.

  1. Open Settings > General > Date & Time and enable Set Automatically or Set Time Automatically.
iPhone Date and Time settings showing Set Automatically enabled for FaceTime activation.
Incorrect time or time zone can stop FaceTime from completing Apple’s activation check.
  2. Confirm that the date, time, and time zone are correct.

A grayed-out toggle can reflect Screen Time or work-device restrictions. Apple’s time-setting guidance explains the limits; ask the device administrator rather than removing management profiles. If the clock is correct but activation still fails, restart both services below.

4. Turn FaceTime and iMessage Off, Restart, Then Turn Both Back On

A pending attempt may clear after a restart. Turning the services off before restarting lets you retry activation without erasing the phone or signing out of iCloud.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > FaceTime and turn FaceTime off.
iPhone FaceTime settings toggled off before restarting and turning FaceTime back on.
Toggling FaceTime after a restart gives the activation request a clean session.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Messages and turn iMessage off.iPhone Messages settings showing iMessage turned off before restarting activation.
  3. Restart the iPhone: hold the side button and either volume button until the power slider appears. On Home-button models, hold the side or top button instead. Slide to power off, then hold the side or top button to turn it on.
  4. Return to both settings pages and turn iMessage and FaceTime back on.

If the number still spins, verification can take up to 24 hours. Leave both services enabled rather than toggling repeatedly. When the number gains a check mark, test a call. An account sign-in error needs the checks below instead.

5. Check Your Account and Use an Email Address While the Number Activates

An activated email address can keep FaceTime usable while your number is pending. It does not finish number verification, but it lets you check whether calls work without that number.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > FaceTime. If offered, tap Use your Apple Account for FaceTime (called Apple ID on older screens), then sign in to your account.
iPhone FaceTime settings showing reachable phone number Apple ID email and Caller ID choices.
A stale number or wrong Caller ID can make FaceTime look unactivated even when another address works.
  2. Under You can be reached by FaceTime at, select your account email. Complete any verification prompt. If the email is unverified, check it at Apple Account and resend its verification email.iPhone FaceTime settings showing You can be reached by FaceTime at with an Apple ID email selected.
  3. Select that email under Caller ID and make a FaceTime call. Ask a contact to call your email too. Caller ID controls outgoing identity; it cannot activate an unchecked number.

A stale number or wrong Caller ID can make FaceTime look unactivated even when another address works.

If email calls work, the remaining number problem still needs carrier verification. Do not delete your active eSIM or change your account’s trusted phone number as an activation shortcut.

If the Apple Account Also Will Not Activate

Apple provides an online activation request. Open the linked apple.co/IMFT-mac page, choose Get Started under Enable Apple Account, and follow the sign-in instructions, including your number if used. Apple emails you if the account is ready.

A message explicitly saying the account is blocked due to reported spam needs Apple’s review. If sign-in still fails, record that message for Apple Support rather than creating a replacement account.

6. Install Pending iOS and Carrier Updates

After a SIM change or phone transfer, outdated software or carrier settings can leave the new setup incomplete. Updates address known software problems and refresh the carrier’s network configuration.

  1. Back up the iPhone, connect to Wi-Fi and power, and open Settings > General > Software Update. Install any available update.

  2. Open Settings > General > About and install any carrier settings update offered.iPhone carrier settings update prompt shown from the About screen.

Duplicate SIM note: Apple documents an iOS 26 iMessage issue involving an inactive SIM with the same number, fixed in iOS 26.1 or later. Update first if that matches your setup. It is not a general reason to delete a FaceTime user’s eSIM.

If the update fails, the iPhone update installation guide covers that problem. If both services still fail after updating, compare networks next.

7. Try Another Connection Before Resetting Network Settings

A connection warning that appears only on one Wi-Fi network can point to filtering rather than a bad account. Comparing networks is less disruptive than resetting saved settings.

  1. Temporarily disconnect a personal VPN or pause its filtering feature. On hotel or public Wi-Fi, open Safari and complete the network’s sign-in page.
  2. Compare trusted Wi-Fi with cellular data. Allow FaceTime under Settings > Cellular when testing mobile data. Restore personal VPN settings afterward.

If another connection works, troubleshoot the original network or VPN. If connection errors persist on the phone, a network reset may help. It will not remove a carrier SMS block or an Apple account restriction.

Before resetting: Save your Wi-Fi passwords. This clears saved networks and resets cellular, VPN, and APN settings, but not photos or apps. Ask IT first on a managed phone. Choose Reset Network Settings, not Erase All Content and Settings or Delete All eSIMs.
  1. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings and confirm with your passcode.
iPhone Reset Network Settings screen used after VPN Wi-Fi or cellular issues block FaceTime activation.
Network reset can clear broken Wi-Fi cellular VPN and APN settings, but saved networks must be added again.
  2. Reconnect to Wi-Fi and reconfigure any personal VPN or carrier-specific APN settings you need.

If activation still fails after the connection is restored, have the carrier or Apple check the number or account instead of resetting repeatedly.

8. Contact the Carrier or Apple When Activation Still Fails

After the checks above, a number that remains unchecked for more than 24 hours needs investigation. Contact the carrier sooner if SMS or cellular service is not working; an account-block message belongs with Apple.

  1. Ask the carrier to check international SMS and the number’s activation on your SIM or eSIM. Mention any recent port or SIM change. Let the carrier decide whether a replacement SIM or eSIM is needed.
  2. When the carrier confirms the line works, contact Apple Support about the unresolved activation. For account sign-in failures, contact Apple directly.
iPhone FaceTime activation error with carrier support and Apple Support contact screens.
After 24 hours, carrier SMS provisioning and Apple account-side checks are the two support handoffs that matter.
  3. Provide the exact error, iPhone model, iOS version, carrier, when activation was attempted, and whether calls work through your email. Include a screenshot showing the unchecked number, but hide personal details in public posts.

If FaceTime still cannot activate, give Apple the carrier’s findings. A factory reset will not clear a carrier restriction or account block.
