Fix: Default Google Account not Changing

After updates by Google, Chrome has now lost the ability to manually change the default account. Before this update, users were able to change their default Gmail account easily by signing out of the current default account. The previously signed in number two accounts automatically became the default account. However, after an update by Google, the only method to change your default Google account is by signing out of all logged-in Google accounts.

However, for users of Google Chrome, this feature does not work. The cause of this problem is the automatic syncing provided by Chrome.

Sign out of all Gmail accounts

The preferred method to change the default Google account is by signing out of all accounts. This is the suggested method across all forums on the Internet. Although this method is very common, the procedure for Google Chrome includes a few extra steps. If you are using Chrome and want to change your default account, kindly refer to the next solution. If you are using any other browser, follow the steps below:

  1. Open any Gmail account. On the top right corner, click on the profile picture.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click on Sign out of all accounts.
    Sign out of all accounts
  3. The first account that you sign in with, will be your default Google account.

Sign out of all Gmail and Chrome accounts

As mentioned above, the verified and promoted solution is to sign out of all accounts. For some users, this option does not work. The reason for this problem is the fact that the default account also becomes the user account for Chrome itself. Many users do not realize this. The solution to this problem is to sign out of all Gmail accounts as well as Google Chrome. To do this

  1. Open any Gmail account. On the top right corner click on the profile picture.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click on Sign out of all accounts.
  3. Following this step click on the three dots bar for Chrome and click on Settings.
    Chrome Settings
  4. Click on Turn off under You and Google.
    Turn off sync
  5. Select Clear Bookmarks, history, password, and more from this device.
    Remove all
  6. This will remove all personalized settings of that account from Chrome.
  7. You can then sign in to Gmail and Chrome with the account you want as your default.
  8. This solution depends on whether you want to keep your personalized settings or not.
