How to Fix Clash Royale Stuck on Updating Screen?

When you download Clash Royale for the first time, or after a major update, the game may get stuck on the updating screen. This is a common issue reported by many players. While Supercell hasn’t provided a permanent solution, there are workarounds that usually help.

This problem often happens when your internet connection is unstable or slower than what the update process requires. The game depends on a steady connection with Supercell’s servers, and even a small interruption can cause the download to stop.

Here’s the important part: the update doesn’t restart from zero. Each time you click Retry, the game resumes downloading the missing data in smaller pieces until the update is fully complete. Once all the data is downloaded, the game will load normally.

Now without further ado let’s move to the solutions that personally helped me get past the update screen.

Before you begin: make sure the issue isn’t on Supercell’s side. Check if Clash Royale’s servers are working properly by visiting a site like DownDetector. If no major outages or login problems have been reported in the last 24 hours, the problem is likely with your device or the game installation.

1) Use Airplane Mode Trick

When the game gets stuck on the updating screen, forcing a quick disconnect and reconnect can help re-establish a stable link with the update servers. This method works by interrupting the failed session and starting a fresh one, which sometimes allows the update to continue downloading.

  1. Turn on Airplane Mode from your phone’s settings.

  2. Open Clash Royale while airplane mode is still enabled.
  3. Turn off Airplane Mode and make sure Wi-Fi is disconnected.
  4. Tap on Retry when the game prompts you.

If successful, the update should resume and progress further instead of freezing at the same point.

2) Keep Clicking on Reconnect

Open the game and if it asks you to reconnect, keep clicking on it repeatedly.

Even though it doesn’t show progress, the update is being downloaded in the background and eventually you will be able to play the game normally.

Note: Sometimes this can take 15 to 20 minutes, so patience is key.

3) Switch Between Wi-Fi and Mobile Data

Sometimes the update process gets stuck because of issues with your current network like high latency, packet loss, or temporary routing problems on your Wi-Fi.

By switching to mobile data (or another faster connection), the game reconnects through a new route and resumes the update from where it left off. This simple network change often helps bypass the stuck screen and push the update forward.

  • Start the game while on Wi-Fi. The moment you see the Supercell logo, quickly switch to mobile data or another internet connection with better speed. This often helps bypass the problem.

4) Clear Cache

Over time, the game stores temporary files (cache) to make loading faster. If these files become corrupted or outdated, they can block the update from installing correctly.

By clearing the cache, you remove those problematic files and force the game to rebuild fresh data the next time it runs. This simple step often resolves update issues without affecting your saved progress or account.

Go to Settings > Apps, find Clash Royale, then open Storage and tap on Clear Cache.

5) Reinstall Clash Royale

Sometimes update issues happen because certain game files become corrupted or outdated during the download process. When this happens, the app may keep getting stuck even after retries.

By reinstalling Clash Royale, you remove all of the broken files and install a fresh copy that already includes the latest update. This ensures you’re starting with a clean version of the game and eliminates hidden errors that cache clearing or network switching might not fix.

Uninstall the game completely, then download it again from the App Store or Google Play Store. This ensures you install the game with the latest update included.
