FIX: Windows 10 Cursor Freezes/Stuck

Many users reported cursor stuck on screen in Windows 10 – usually, on notebooks and laptops after they’ve been upgraded to Windows 10. The upgrade overwrites the existing drivers, therefore it may be possible that the drivers may have become incompatiable with the touchpad, hence why the cursor is stuck on screen. However, this rarely happens, and there are other several other possibilities as well which may stop the mouse cursor from moving. In this guide, we will walk you trough a couple of steps to address the issue.

Whilst the cursor is frozen, you will need to make use of Keyboard

While you search for a solution, you will need to rely on your Keyboard and navigate using it.

Use Windows key on your keyboard to access the Start Menu.

Use Tab to navigate to different items in applications or your web browser. For example, Tab key will take you to next link in a web browser. Use Shift+Tab to reverse the navigation order. Use Enter to open the item or link.

Use arrow keys to navigate to different items in folders or Control Panel.

Use Alt+Tab to navigate to different open Windows.

Pressing Windows+X key on your keyboard gives a menu of useful items to navigate.

If you can arrange a USB mouse, use it until you solve your cursor frozen issues.

Solution 1: Use the Function Keys to Check TouchPad

If you are using a laptop, check if you have unknowingly disabled the trackpad. Different laptops have different key combinations to disable trackpad using Fn key. For example, many Lenovo laptops use the Fn+F8 key as a shortcut to disable and enable trackpad.

If you take a look at the Fn keys, you will see symbols on it. The symbol for touchpad will look like this.

After you’ve identified which symbol/key is it, hold the Fn key and Press the TouchPad key. For example: Fn + F5. Then check, and test to see if the mouse works.

Solution 2: Check Mouse Properties

Go to the mouse properties in Settings (Control Panel) and check if the trackpad is enabled in settings. Hold the Windows Key and Press X. Choose Control Panel -> “search for Mouse” or choose “mouse“. Usually, the touchpad setting is the last tab, it may have any name depending on your device manufacturer such as “Device Settings”, “Synaptics”, or “ELAN” etc. Click on it, and make sure that it is Enabled.

Solution 3: Check the TouchPad Drivers

If nothing works, then locate the model # of your system and visit your system manufacturer’s site to download the latest drivers. After downloading the drivers, run the setup and install them. Then test to see.

don’t know if anyone is listening, but since I bought the laptop with Win 10 installed. Often when I right click on mouse, it jumps around uselessly and to fix it I have to press control alt delete click on task manager and then restart windows explorer. Can not find anyone with same problem on net.

I will install it for fun but as it says it disables touchpad while typing. I think I will be reporting back it was no help. I plug me laptop into my big screen and type wirelessly. And the problem occurs when I right click on a file or photo or folder etc.

        But will download
        Thanks for trying to help

I downloaded and installed touchfreeze. I the, using my wireless mouse right clicked on a folder than a file.
The cursor wandered around until I did what I usually do press control alt delete clicked task managerial and restarted explorer.
        I truly dislike win 10.
Since the last update removed programs and reset it to factory settings I have to once again learn how to stop those audio ads from blaring randomly.
        Appreciate your time

Are you using the mouse on the laptop or the externally attached wireless mouse?

I use a wireless mouse with dongle inserted into computer and wireless keyboard the same.
Something different happened. I was right clicking on various things and then all the mouse moved around a bit then all folders closed but the computer doesn’t freeze. Sometimes right click works sometimes mot
        Thanks

Can you disable the touchpad (built-in) one and then test?

Hi, I turned off the touchpad and right clicking is the same as last I reported. Occasionally when I right click, the cursor moves around on its own then all the folders close. This is much better than before, when the cursor would move around and I would have to press ctrl alt delete to open the task manager. Having the folders all close is less annoying and time wasting then the situation previously. So I think this is the best that I can expect.
Ironically, the trouble I read about that many people encounter. The cursor moving around when typing is something I never encountered when using the laptop alone with touch pad on.
          Thanks again

I had the frozen pointer issue suddenly occur. Very frustrating until I searched (Using my desktop system) and after one or two dead ends (YAHOO!) I came to this site and Solution 1 above worked. What other booby traps await my stiff old fingers lurking in the f keys I can’t wait to find out.

I can’t shut down, use my cursor or touch screen and none of these solutions are working. I’ve been tinkering with it, but still nothing. Please someone help! What do I do, it’s driving me crazy!!

First of all check your task manager for the CPU Usage. If everything else is fine, there is a rare case in which if a user is using a wireless mouse and a wireless internet connection the mouse doesn’t work because both the mouse and Wifi transmit at 2.4Ghz and Wifi blocks the input from the mouse. Also, if the CPU usage is 100% the computer is bound to lag. Check to see if the clock on your RAMs is according to its rating ( Reduce the overclock if you implemented one). Change the USB port in which you are plugging the mouse. If none of these work it is recommended to get a professional’s help

    Try this:
“First of all check your task manager for the CPU Usage. Fixed the Icon cursor on Lenovo laptop, it would not switch correctly, for instance the up/down scrolling cursor would suddenly start appearing everywhere the standard arrow cursor should be displayed, went to Settings > Mouse > Additional Mouse Options > Pointers tab and clicked the ‘Use Default’ button, this resets the cursor icons to the standard Windows icons (instead of the custom Lenovo icons)

I have a brand new Dell Inspiron laptop. The cursor moves fine for a couple of hours, then suddenly gets very ‘sticky’–it won’t move the way I want it to, to the point that turning off my computer is a bit of an ordeal. When I restart, it works fine again.
