PS5 Pro is Sony’s only profitable console right now, claims insider

PS5’s soaring sales figures have put it well ahead of Sony’s previous-gen consoles in bringing in raw numbers for the company, albeit at a modest 9.5% profit margin. The entire series has generated well over $136 billion in sales over five years. Despite that, a reliable leaker has claimed that the company is losing money on all but one console, the PS5 Pro.
In a series of posts on the NeoGAF board, AMD leaker KeplerL2 has stated that Sony’s only profitable console is the PS5 Pro. He mentioned that there was a brief period where the entire series was in the green, but with rising component prices, especially for GDDR6 memory, and N7 wafers that power its SoC, the net profits fell.

Kepler stated that “PS5 had a brief period of being even/profitable, but then component prices went up (N7 wafers, GDDR6, and a few others) and went right back to losing money.” He added, “AFAIK, regular PS5 is still sold at a minor loss, only the PS5 Pro is profitable.”
The $700 MSRP for the PS5 Pro is keeping the entire series in the positive, though it is important to take this news with a grain of salt. Sony hasn’t given full details on individual sales numbers for its console hardware, but we do know it chose to stick with larger chip sizes, unlike Xbox, which switched to TSMC’s 6nm process node to bring down manufacturing costs.
