Sony Announces PlayStation VR2 Pricing, Coming in at a Significant Markup Over Last Gen
Starts at $549.99 US
In July this year, Sony introduced the PlayStation VR 2 with a host of new features. While Sony revealed a lot of technical information back then, they didn’t reveal the pricing. Finally, the company has announced the pricing of its next generation VR headset.
The PlayStation VR2 will retail for $549.99 (or €599.99 / £529.99 / ¥74,980), with the whole package including the PS VR2 headset, along with a pair of Sense controllers, and also stereo headphones. While the PS VR2 Sense controllers can be charged though the PS5’s USB port, Sony will also sell a standalone controller charging station for $49.99 (or €49.99 / £39.99 / ¥5,480).
The first PSVR actually launched way back in 2016, and for just $400. Compared to that, the upcoming PS VR2 retails at a way pricier $550. But that’s not the whole story, while the PS VR2 retails for significantly higher, it also comes with the new Sense controllers in the box which were missing in the first PS VR.
Apart from that, the PS VR2 should be leaps and bounds ahead of the first PS VR, with its significantly sharper display, inside-out tracking, and six onboard IR cameras. Taking all this into account, the PS VR2 pricing feels fair, and also in line with comparable VR headsets on the market like the HTC Vive.
PlayStation VR2 Sense Technology includes key features that enable unique gameplay experiences, such as headset feedback, eye tracking, 3D audio, and the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback from the PS VR2 Sense controllers. Together with compatible games they will captivate players’ senses and offer an incredibly deep feeling of immersion.
Additionally, with enhanced headset-based controller tracking and high fidelity visuals in 4000 x 2040 HDR video format (2000 x 2040 per eye), PS VR2 adds a true next-gen gaming experience for players to enjoy.
