We’ve all seen the memes where some Internet troll proceeds to undermine another person on the Internet and the victim then responds with the troll’s IP address, which shuts the troll up for good. The act of retrieving another person’s IP address is known as IP logging. The memes may make it out to be quite funny, but it has far more disturbing implications

Although you might expect these types of exchanges on video games on PC, you’ll be surprised to know that IP logging can also happen when gaming on the PS4. And if a player decides to reply with your IP address just because you made a snide remark about how he missed an easy kill, there’s no other comeback other than responding in the same manner.

But how does one IP log, especially on a PS4? Let’s find out.

What is an IP Logger?

An IP logger is a tool that can be used to retrieve the IP address of a person using the Internet. IP loggers are commonly used in website development where you need to verify the region of the person browsing your website e.g. when you’re trying to browse Amazon, it will automatically redirect you to your region based off your IP address, so that can get the accurate price and shipping charges.

Setting Up your PS4 for IP Logging

Since the PS4 has limited capabilities when it comes to tasks other than gaming, for most IP loggers, you’ll need to set up your PS4 in a particular manner. Don’t worry, you won’t have to jailbreak your PS4. Therefore, before you can begin IP logging on the PS4, you’ll need 2 things:

1. A Windows desktop or laptop device
2. 2 Ethernet cables.
3. A USB–to–RJ45 adapter (optional; only if your Windows device does not have 2 Ethernet ports).

Once you have the following components, you’ll need to route your Internet through the Windows device to your PS4. Here’s how you can do this:

Only 2 connections should be active, so right–click on the Ethernet option and click on Properties. Make sure that the Ethernet option you select has Network written under Ethernet.
   

   

7. In the Properties menu, navigate to the Sharing tab. Put a check in the Allow other users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection checkbox. Use the Home networking connection drop-down menu to select the other (PS4’s) Ethernet option.
   

   

8. Once done, click on OK to save your settings and exit.
   

   

9. Now, on the dashboard of your PS4, navigate to Settings (briefcase icon).
   

   

10. Now you need to access the Network settings.
    

    

11. Choose the Set Up Internet Connection. Make sure that the Connect to the Internet checkbox has a check on it.
    

    

12. From the 2 options, choose Use a LAN Cable.
    

    

13. Select the Easy method on the next menu.

Octosniff is probably the best IP logger available for PC, Xbox and PlayStation. Grabify is an IP logger that requires the user that you’re targeting to click on a shortened link. Unlike the typical spam shortened link, this link won’t be spam; it will direct the user to the original link without any delays. Using Grabify is really easy; just follow the steps below:

1. First, copy the link of any webpage.
2. Next, open up the Grabify website and paste the link on the search bar present at the front. Click on Create URL.
   

   

3. Click on I Agree and Create URL on the menu that pops up.

Well, a VPN may trick these websites but it depends on the type of VPN you’re using; a paid and premium one like NordVPN could work, while the random free VPN you downloaded may not.

Your ISP, naturally, is aware of your IP address. Even while using a VPN, they’ll see the IP address the VPN is using. However, any data you browse or view will show not up on your ISP’s database, provided that you use a good VPN.
