Sony Rumored to Unveil PlayStation 5 Pro with Proprietary DLSS-like Technology in Late 2024

There are rumors circulating within the gaming community suggesting that Sony might be planning to release a PlayStation 5 Pro console in late 2024. Reliable sources, including Giant Bomb reporter Jeff Grubb, have shared information supporting the idea of a mid-gen upgrade for the PS5.

Grubb recently stated that he has confidence in the PlayStation 5 Pro leak, adding,

That PS5 Pro leak is almost certainly real based on what I’ve heard now, and obviously I’m not the only one out there saying that, but I can throw my ‘confirm, confirm, confirm’ into the ring for everybody.”

Jeff Grubb

According to Grubb, the expected release date for the upgraded console is September 2024.

Preliminary specifications have been mentioned, although they are subject to change as the final details are not confirmed. One notable feature anticipated in the PlayStation 5 Pro is Sony’s proprietary DLSS-like solution. This technology uses machine learning to improve images, allowing the console to run games at higher resolutions and frame rates. Sony plans to incorporate its hardware for this purpose, aiming for 2x hardware ray tracing acceleration.

The big thing here, like the big feature that this system will support, is Sony’s own proprietary DLSS-like solution, where they use their own machine learning to improve images so they can run things at a really high resolution and really high frame rate, and they would include their own hardware in the PS5 Pro to do this.

That’s where like the 2x hardware ray tracing acceleration comes into place, but they would be able to do even more than just better hardware ray tracing. So yeah, this thing is probably happening.”

DLSS, a well-known feature exclusive to Nvidia graphics cards on PCs, uses artificial intelligence to upscale game resolutions, providing improved graphical settings and frame rates on less powerful hardware.

Earlier this summer, legal documents from Microsoft hinted at Sony’s plans for both PlayStation 5 Slim and Pro consoles. The PS5 Slim has already been released in November, and if rumors are accurate, the Pro variant could be the next addition to Sony’s gaming console lineup.

Sony has ambitious goals for the current fiscal year, aiming to ship 25 million PlayStation 5 consoles by March 2024. Success in this endeavor would surpass a 25-year-old record set by the original PlayStation, which shipped 22.6 million units over a 12-month period.

While the community awaits official confirmation from Sony, the potential arrival of the PlayStation 5 Pro suggests advancements in technology for console gaming enthusiasts worldwide. Stay tuned for further updates as the story develops.
