Pentiment Is Getting Numerous Negative User Reviews Despite Having A Solid Critics Score

Pentiment was released on 15th November 2022, an out-of-the-box adventure game by Obsidian Entertainment and Xbox Game Studios. Pentiment got positive reviews from the critics due to the art style of the game, inspired by 16th century Europe, and the game’s story is also plausible with its twists and turns to keep the player Invested.

The basic overview of the story would be; a traveler and artist (protagonist) who just moved into a new town but got tangled in a murder case that he has to solve in order to complete the game. But the catch here is that the story and consequences are heavily impacted by the decisions and choices you make throughout the game, and the end result will be according to that.

Interestingly, even at the end, you are not entirely sure whether you have solved the case, and that is how the game is intended to be. Unfortunately, Pentiment is being review bombed on Metacritic. Apparently, the story’s pace is not good, and the unique storybook-inspired art style is the reason for the negative reviews.

Interestingly, not only are the users bombarding the negative reviews on Metacritic, but a large portion of players are also giving Pentiment a straight 10/10 score to overcome the negative comments. At the time of writing this article, Pentiment is sitting at an overall critics score of 85/100 and a user rating of 7.1/10 with 222 ratings and 125 reviews. While 27% of them are negative; this is the Xbox Series X version of the game.

Still, the positive reviews have the upper hand due to the fans who have actually played the game are defending the title. Pentiment is indeed a unique game, and it is not for everyone as it only targets specific audiences with its impressive storyline; as a user writes who gave the game a perfect 10/10 score:

In a world of Call of Duty and Destiny we need a game like this. I can see why some might not like it due to the amount of reading and the style of gameplay but for the targeted playerbase it is a masterpiece.

Undoubtedly, the game is worth a play if you are a fan of stories and mysteries, it will be a fun little play. Recently, Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 also got a review bombed on Metacritic, but that is a different story you can read here.

Pentiment is free on Xbox Game Pass to play on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. So, what are your thoughts about this? Have you played Pentiment yet? Did you like it? Let us know in the comment section below.
