How to Troubleshoot Opera GX Not Opening Issue?

Some users encounter issues when launching the Opera GX browser, as it fails to open or crashes shortly after launching. This restricts their ability to access the internet. While there’s no single definitive cause for this problem, several factors, such as an overflowing app cache, conflicts with antivirus programs, or an outdated Opera version, could be to blame.

In this article, we will explore various solutions to tackle this issue.

1. Clear Cache

Cache build-up can interfere with browser performance. Clearing the cache may solve the problem by removing unnecessary files.

  1. Press Windows + R, enter
    appdata

    and press Enter.

  2. Navigate to the ‘Local’ folder and then proceed to ‘Opera Software’.
  3. Delete the contents of the ‘Opera Software’ folder.
  4. Perform the same deletion process in the ‘Roaming’ folder.

2. Disable Antivirus

Antivirus software like Webroot can sometimes conflict with Opera GX. We suggest temporarily turning off or uninstalling any antivirus software that could be causing the problem.

Reinstalling Opera GX can fix corrupted files or restore deleted ones without losing your browsing data.

  1. Download Opera GX from the official website here.
  2. Run the installer and select Accept and Upgrade.
  3. Complete the installation by following the on-screen instructions.

Following these steps should result in a successful upgrade or reinstallation of the browser.

4. Reset Opera GX Settings to Default

If the browser is still malfunctioning, resetting Opera GX settings to their default may help.

  1. Open Opera GX and enter the following in the address bar:
    opera://settings/reset

  2. Click on ‘Reset settings to their original defaults’.
  3. Confirm by clicking the Reset button.

5. Disable Extensions

Extensions, especially those that are outdated or buggy, could be causing issues. Disabling all extensions could resolve the problem.

  1. Open Opera GX and navigate to the Extensions Manager by clicking the extension icon on the left sidebar.
  2. Turn off all extensions and restart the browser to see if the problem has been resolved.

6. Create a New User Profile

If the earlier solutions don’t work, consider creating a new user profile in Opera GX as the issue might stem from the current profile.

  1. Access the Opera GX settings by clicking the gear icon.
  2. Select Manage GX Profiles.
  3. Choose Create Profile and follow the prompts.
