Two more fan-favourite warriors, as well as two classic Kameo fighters, have recently been announced for Mortal Kombat 1. Since Liu Kang, now the Fire Boss, resets the timeline at the end of Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath DLC, NetherRelam’s next epic fighting game will usher in a new era for Mortal Kombat. A new, more hopeful reality has taken its place, one in which numerous major characters from Mortal Kombat have been improved, albeit this may not last forever.

Over the course of the months since Mortal Kombat 1’s announcement, NetherRealm has been gradually unveiling the game’s roster of playable fighters. Recent reveals include Reptile, a long-rumoured MK mainstay, Ashrah, a reformed demon warrior, and Havik, a cleric from the Chaosrealm. Players can also select from a roster of Kameo fighters to aid them in combat, meaning the primary roster is only half of the game’s lineup. These additional characters are based on the original Mortal Kombat fighters and can use lethal combos at the stroke of a button.

Details Revealed at Gamescom by Ed Boon

At Gamescom 2023’s Opening Night Live event, Ed Boon joined host Geoff Keighley to talk about Mortal Kombat 1 and show off a brand new story trailer, expanding the character rosters for both the arcade and PC versions of the game. This trailer proves that Shao Kahn, the primary antagonist of the Mortal Kombat series, will be in the new chronology of Mortal Kombat 1, serving as a general for Outworld. Empress Sindel is the current monarch of Outworld and the mother of Mortal Kombat 1’s twin princesses Kitara and Mileena, but General Shao’s goal to conquer EarthRelam through war pits him against her.

Both Shao and Sindel show off their own move sets and vicious strikes in this Mortal Kombat 1 X-Ray video, with Shao using his battle axe and physical strength to retain dominance and Sindel using her mystical abilities and prehensile hair to impose her will. Sindel kills Shao with a brutal Fatality, breaking off his arms with her hair and then ripping his skull and spine out of his body. Shao, however, gets a rematch with Earthrealm’s chosen champion Raiden, who is anxious to show Liu Kang why he should be champion.

The latest Mortal Kombat 1 trailer also features a slew of returning Kameo fighters from previous games, proving that none of these warriors fight alone. With stinger tail attacks and a rib-crushing X-Ray kick, Motaro, the centaur-like fighter from Mortal Kombat 3, returns to help Sindel. Meanwhile, the reputed hero of Mortal Kombat: Deception, Shujinko, comes to Raiden’s aid and helps him destroy General Shao with a succession of quick punches and a crushing throat grip.
