When the Microsoft error 1200 occurs, users find themselves unable to log into OneDrive, typically encountering a “Something went wrong” message without any further details. The error code 1200 indicates a breakdown in the connection or authentication with Microsoft’s servers, which can be particularly problematic when syncing or logging in.This error can be also be encountered across various Microsoft 365 applications, but it is most commonly seen in OneDrive and Outlook.

Even when there’s no issue with your Microsoft Credentials, you might come across this error due to corrupted cache data within Microsoft and its applications. Clearing these cache files will typically resolve the error.

1. Delete Microsoft and Application Cache Folders

To begin, let’s delete the Microsoft Cache folders holding user-related data, such as credentials, account details, and frequently accessed information. If this cache data becomes corrupted, it might lead to unexpected application behavior. Thus, we’ll clear both Microsoft’s cache and the application’s cache.

  1. Press the Win + R keys concurrently to open the Run Window.
  2. Type %localappdata% and press OK to open the desired folder.
  3. Locate the Microsoft folder in the list and enter it.
  4. Delete the following folders within:
    • IdentityCache
    • OneAuth

  5. Next, remove the specific application’s Cache folder. For example, if the error appears on OneDrive, delete the OneDrive folder.
  6. After completing these steps, verify if the error has been resolved.

2. Clear Microsoft Account Credentials

Given that the error is linked to credential issues, we can attempt to resolve this by removing the Microsoft credentials using the Credential Manager.

  1. Press the Win key and enter Control Panel.
  2. Press Enter to access the Control Panel.
  3. Navigate to User Accounts > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials.
  4. Scroll down and locate the Microsoft Account User, then click the drop-down icon next to it.
  5. Click on Remove followed by Yes to confirm the action.
  6. If your system is managed by an organization, you may need to disconnect and reconnect your user account through the Work or School settings.
  7. Check to see if the error has been resolved after completing these steps.

3. Perform a Clean Boot

A clean boot is a mode in Windows where only essential system programs and services are allowed to start up, which can help diagnose conflicts with third-party applications or services.

  1. Press the Win + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type msconfig and press OK to launch the System Configuration window.
  3. Select Selective Startup, then switch to the Services tab.
  4. Mark the Hide All Microsoft Services checkbox and click Disable All.
  5. Restart your computer and then attempt to sign in to the application.

4. Reinstall the Application

If no other solutions have been effective, consider reinstalling the application. This can address issues with the application’s files that might be causing the error.

  1. Press the Win key and search for Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Press Enter to open the settings panel.
  3. Locate and select the application, click on the three dots, and choose Uninstall.
  4. Confirm by clicking on Uninstall again.
  5. Reinstall the application from the Microsoft Store.

The issue should now be resolved.

If reinstalling the application does not resolve the issue, you may need to reset Windows or use a system restore utility to revert to an earlier state where the error was not present.

Moreover, ensure your operating system is up to date. Additionally, consider resetting the Microsoft Store before proceeding to reset Windows.
