How to Fix Mac Touch Bar Not Showing?
The Touch Bar on a MacBook Pro sometimes shows only F1-F12, loses the Control Strip, or disappears in one app while working everywhere else. It can also go completely black but still react when you tap where a button should be.

What you see on screen is useful evidence. A responsive but unlit strip means the Mac is still receiving touch input. When the Touch Bar also disappears from Keyboard settings, macOS may no longer be loading its system service or detecting the hardware.
| What the Touch Bar is doing | Best place to start |
|---|---|
| The Mac has physical function keys and has never shown a Touch Bar | Confirm the exact model in Method 1. |
| F1-F12 stays visible, or the Control Strip is missing | Restore the display options in Method 2. |
| The Touch Bar is blank only in one app | Repair that app’s layout in Method 3. |
| The strip is black or frozen but still responds to taps | Restart macOS and its Touch Bar processes in Method 4. |
| It works in Safe Mode but fails after a normal startup | Check login items and extensions in Method 5. |
| It flickers, has a dead section, or remains absent everywhere | Use Apple Diagnostics and the service checks in Method 7. |
1. Confirm the MacBook Pro Model if the Touch Bar Has Never Appeared
What looks like a missing Touch Bar can be the normal keyboard for that model. Apple sold MacBook Pro models with and without a Touch Bar during the same period.
The 13-inch M2 model from 2022 still had a Touch Bar, while the 14-inch and 16-inch models introduced from 2021 returned to physical function keys.
Screen size or purchase year alone is not enough to identify the keyboard. Checking the technical specifications prevents time being spent on controls that the Mac never included.
- Choose Apple menu > About This Mac and note the exact model, year, and chip or processor.

Apple’s own model-identification path is the fastest way to separate a missing Touch Bar from a Mac that simply uses physical function keys instead. - Find that model in Apple’s MacBook Pro identification guide and open its technical specifications.
- If the specifications list 12 full-height function keys and do not mention a Touch Bar, the Mac does not contain one; no macOS setting can add it.

Apple’s current spec pages make it clear that some MacBook Pro models still had a Touch Bar while newer 14-inch and 16-inch models moved back to physical function keys.
If the Touch Bar appears in Apple’s specifications, continue to Method 2. If the model has physical function keys, there is no missing feature to repair.
When the entire keyboard or top row is also failing, use this MacBook Pro keyboard guide instead.
2. Restore App Controls and the Control Strip in Keyboard Settings
A working Touch Bar can look broken when macOS is set to show function keys or when the Control Strip is hidden. One app can also be configured to use F1-F12.
Start here when the strip lights up or changes after you press Fn or Globe. A completely black strip is unlikely to be fixed by changing its visible layout; Method 4 addresses that system-level state.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Touch Bar Settings. On older macOS versions, open System Preferences > Keyboard.
- Set Touch Bar shows to App Controls. To test the full panel with fixed system controls, temporarily choose Expanded Control Strip.
- Turn on Show Control Strip if the brightness, volume, and other controls on the right are missing.

Apple’s own Touch Bar settings page shows that the bar can appear empty only because it is set to the wrong display mode for your current workflow. - If F1-F12 appears only in one app, open Keyboard Shortcuts > Function Keys and remove that app unless you intentionally want traditional function keys there.
- Press and release Fn or Globe. Depending on the selected keyboard behavior, holding this key can temporarily replace app controls with F1-F12.
Apple’s Touch Bar settings guide explains each display choice.
If Expanded Control Strip appears, the settings caused the symptom. If the Touch Bar still fails to appear on a supported model, continue to Method 4 because macOS is not detecting it normally.
3. Repair the Layout if the Touch Bar Is Blank in One App
A strip that works in Finder and other apps but turns blank in one program is unlikely to have a system-wide hardware fault. This usually happens when the app freezes, saves an empty layout, or depends on a disabled Quick Action extension.
Do not use this method when the strip is dark in every app; that is not an app-specific layout problem.
- Quit and reopen the affected app. If it will not close, press Option + Command + Esc, select the app, and choose Force Quit.
- With the app open, choose View > Customize Touch Bar, drag the controls you want onto the strip, and select Done. This menu appears only in apps that support customization.

Apple’s own Touch Bar customisation flow shows that one app can lose or rearrange its controls without the whole Touch Bar being broken. - If you use Quick Actions, open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Select the information button beside Touch Bar and enable the actions you need.

Apple’s extensions settings make it clear that a missing Touch Bar quick action can be an extension toggle problem rather than a dead Touch Bar.
Apple also documents these controls in its Touch Bar customization guide.
If the Touch Bar returns, its saved layout or extension caused the problem. If the app remains blank, update or reinstall it; when every app is affected, continue to Method 4.
4. Restart macOS and Its Touch Bar Processes
macOS draws the Touch Bar through background processes. The failure usually appears after the Mac wakes from sleep, an app crashes, or an update is interrupted, leaving one of those processes frozen while the hardware still responds.
A normal restart reloads the complete service chain and is safer than starting with old Terminal commands. Skip this method only if the Touch Bar is visibly damaged or the Mac recently had liquid exposure.
- Save your work, open the Apple menu, and choose Restart. Closing and reopening the lid is not the same test.
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest compatible macOS update offered for this Mac. Restart again after the installation.

Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance for Mac input and startup issues still puts software updates and a clean restart ahead of more invasive recovery work. - If the Touch Bar remains frozen, open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities.
- Search for TouchBarServer. If it appears, select it, click the Stop button, and choose Force Quit. macOS should start the process again automatically.
- Search for ControlStrip and repeat the same step if that process exists and only the right-side controls are frozen.
Current macOS versions do not always show both process names. An empty search is not proof that the name was entered incorrectly.
Do not add system files to Login Items, disable System Integrity Protection, or keep repeating legacy killall commands. Apple’s macOS update guide covers the supported update path for each model.
If a restart or process reload restores the strip, the system service was stuck. If it stays dark or the process will not load, continue to Method 5 and test the startup environment.
5. Use Safe Mode to Find a Startup-Software Conflict
Safe Mode loads the software macOS needs to start while leaving most third-party login items and extensions inactive. A Touch Bar that works there shows that macOS can communicate with the strip; software loaded during a normal startup becomes the main suspect.
This test is not needed when the panel is physically cracked, flickering after impact, or known to have liquid damage.
- Check Apple menu > About This Mac to see whether the Mac uses Apple silicon or an Intel processor.
- On Apple silicon, shut down the Mac. Hold the power button until startup options appear, select the startup disk, hold Shift, and click Continue in Safe Mode.
- On an Intel-based Mac, restart and immediately hold Shift until the login window appears.
- Sign in and test the Touch Bar in Finder and an Apple app. It is normal for startup and graphics behavior to feel slower in Safe Mode.

Apple’s safe-mode flow is one of the cleanest ways to check whether the Touch Bar failure is tied to normal startup items rather than the hardware itself. - Restart normally. If the Touch Bar fails again, open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
- Disable recently added keyboard remappers, shortcut tools, automation utilities, display tools, and other login items one at a time. Restart after each change so you can identify the conflict instead of disabling everything permanently.
Apple’s Safe Mode instructions cover both processor types. This illustrated Mac Safe Mode guide can help with the startup sequence.
On a managed Mac, stop if policy restores an item after each restart and report the result to the administrator. If the Touch Bar works in Safe Mode, a login item or extension is interfering. If it remains dark there, continue to Method 6.
6. Reset the SMC on an Intel MacBook Pro
The System Management Controller handles low-level power and hardware behavior on Intel Macs. Resetting it is relevant when the Touch Bar remains dark or behaves unpredictably in every app after a normal restart and Safe Mode test.
- Confirm that About This Mac lists an Intel processor.
- On a Touch Bar Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip, shut it down. Hold left Control + left Option + right Shift for 7 seconds, then keep holding those keys while also holding the power or Touch ID button for another 7 seconds.
- Release every key, wait a few seconds, and press the power button to start the Mac.
- On an older Intel MacBook Pro without T2, shut it down and hold left Shift + left Control + left Option + power for 10 seconds. Release the keys, then turn the Mac on.
Use Apple’s SMC reset guide if you are unsure which sequence belongs to the model.
Older troubleshooting pages often pair an SMC reset with an NVRAM reset. Apple documents Option + Command + P + R as an Intel startup-settings reset, not as a universal Touch Bar repair.
Leave NVRAM for an additional startup-setting problem or an Apple-directed test. If the SMC reset restores the strip, its low-level controller state was stuck. If it still fails, continue to Method 7.

7. Test the Hardware with Apple Diagnostics if the Strip Stays Black
A Touch Bar that remains black in normal startup and Safe Mode is more likely to have a hardware, display, or internal-connection fault. Flickering, a permanently dead section, or failure after a drop, liquid exposure, or keyboard repair strengthens that conclusion.
Apple Diagnostics can identify some supported hardware faults and provide a reference code for service. A clean result does not prove that the Touch Bar’s OLED panel or cable is healthy, especially when the fault is intermittent.
Use this only after the settings, restart, and Safe Mode checks have failed. Visible impact or liquid damage can go directly to a service inspection.
- Shut down the Mac and disconnect external devices except power, Ethernet, and any keyboard, mouse, or display needed for the test.

- On Apple silicon, hold the power or Touch ID button until startup options appear, release it, then hold Command-D until the Mac restarts.

- On an Intel-based Mac, turn it on and immediately hold D. If that fails, restart and hold Option-D.

- Follow the onscreen checks and record every reference code. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, choose the built-in keyboard diagnostic if Apple offers it.
- Use the code and the exact symptom when you contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Mention whether taps still register, whether Touch Bar settings are present, and whether the strip worked in Safe Mode.
Apple’s Diagnostics guide contains the current startup sequence and service options.
If Diagnostics returns a code, include it with the repair request. Even without a code, a strip that flickers, has dead pixels, or stopped after physical or liquid damage still needs inspection because the fault may not be active during the test.
