Players step into the roles of Batman’s protégés—Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood—as they work together to restore justice and protect Gotham from chaos.

The core gameplay is presented from a third-person perspective, letting you experience each character’s unique way of moving across Gotham and their individual combat styles. It features an open-world design, where players can explore Gotham City freely, interact with a variety of characters, take on different missions, and upgrade their heroes and gear as they go.

Gotham Knights received mixed reviews, with some critics drawing comparisons to the earlier Batman: Arkham games. Fans of the Arkham series brought high expectations due to the critical success and popularity of those games, especially Batman: Arkham Knight.

The Arkham games were celebrated for their engaging storytelling, immersive combat, and the atmospheric recreation of Gotham City. In comparison, Gotham Knights faced criticism for its gameplay and storyline, with some feeling it didn’t match the level set by the Arkham series.

After Gotham Knights was released, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League launched. Created by Rocksteady Studios, the developers behind the Arkham series, this game was expected to carry forward their legacy as a spiritual successor.

However, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League also received mixed feedback, with particular criticism aimed at its repetitive gameplay, “live service” features, and its depiction of Batman—especially since this was Kevin Conroy‘s last performance voicing the character. The attempt to blend a cinematic story with ongoing service elements didn’t resonate well with fans.

Because of the lukewarm response to Suicide Squad, some gamers started to view Gotham Knights more positively. While not perfect, it was considered a better portrayal of the Batman universe compared to the Suicide Squad game.

What Platforms is Gotham Knights Available on?

Gotham Knights is playable on Steam (PC), PlayStation 5 (PS5), and Xbox Series X|S. Unfortunately, it’s not available for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

Does Gotham Knights Support Cross-Play?

Gotham Knights picked up attention for its co-op gameplay and letting you take control of various Bat-family members. But does it allow friends on different systems to play together?

At launch, Gotham Knights did not support cross-platform play. However, with an update on September 27, 2023, cross-play was introduced specifically between Xbox Series S/X and PC. This means players on these platforms can now join forces and tackle missions together. Sadly, PlayStation 5 (PS5) users do not have cross-play access, and there’s no official information about future support for PS5.

As for co-op gameplay, Gotham Knights allows you to team up with one other player for online co-op. Local split-screen (couch co-op) is not supported. If you’re playing on Xbox or PlayStation, you’ll need an active PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription to play online with friends.

In addition, on November 29, 2022, Gotham Knights released a free co-op mode called Heroic Assault. In this mode, up to four players can team up online and take on challenges together, forming a full squad to face Gotham’s criminal threats.
