Take-Two Interactive Reveals GTA 5 Has Sold Over 170 Million Copies Worldwide

Today Take-Two Interactive Inc. made their quarterly financial report public and also organized an earnings conference call to better understand the future of the games under the company and the current status of their financials. Well, the highlight of the financial report was none other than the Grand Theft Auto Franchise.

The released quarterly financial report shows that the franchise sold over 385 million copies worldwide. While GTA 5 alone stands at a jaw-dropping 170 million figure, making 44.2% of total GTA franchise sales.

Interestingly, GTA 5 sales have slowed down this quarter compared to the last financial quarter, as it was previously reported that GTA 5 has sold ‘nearly’ 170 million copies worldwide. Whereas this time, it is only ‘over’ 170 million copies, so that doesn’t make much difference.

Still, the franchise is up 5 million in sales from 380 million reported in the last quarter to 385 million in the recent report. Most of these sales might have come from Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, but Take-Two hasn’t released any exact sale figures for The Definitive Edition since its release in November 2021

Well, it is also not the most pretty thing to celebrate, as the game had a disastrous launch filled with bugs, major graphic issues and critical backlash. The Definitive Edition was stated as a ‘failed-attempt’ to restore the classic. However, I think nostalgia played a major part in the game’s hype and popularity, due to which it was able to gather a lot of hype around it when it was announced that Rockstar was working on a Definitive Edition of their classic games and when it was released.

When Take-Two Interactive released its last financial report, many media outlets speculated that The Trilogy had sold roughly 10 million copies by considering the franchise’s total sales. Again even this time, the company didn’t reveal a separate sales record for the Definitive Edition, and it isn’t easy to assume or speculate its sales.

Undoubtedly the sales record of the Grand Theft Auto franchise is still impressive, and the franchise has a long-lasting legacy of many timeless classic games that have shaped our childhoods. What are your thoughts about GTA sales? Let us know in the comment section below.
