How to Fix the “zlib.dll is Missing” Error in Windows?

The “zlib.dll is missing” error typically occurs when launching a program that fails due to a missing or corrupted zlib.dll file. This error prevents the software from starting properly and often affects games or applications that use data compression, such as Grand Theft Auto V or other resource-heavy applications.

This error indicates that the dynamic link library file responsible for compression and decompression processes is either not found or has been compromised.

The most common cause of this issue is file corruption due to malware or accidental deletion, though hardware issues like bad sectors on a hard drive can also be culprits.

Before trying the methods below, it is recommended to reinstall the affected application first, as this can sometimes resolve the issue without additional steps.

1. Download the DLL File

Downloading the zlib.dll from a reliable source can resolve the missing file issue. Once downloaded, go to your PC’s Downloads folder and extract the DLL’s setup file. Move the extracted file to the application’s base folder that had the missing zlib.dll error. This step ensures the application has the necessary file to operate properly.

Note: Ensure you download DLL files only from a trusted and reliable source to avoid potential malware.

2. Update Windows

Windows updates bring new features and fix known bugs and compatibility issues. Keeping your system updated improves its overall performance and stability.

  1. Type “Check for updates” in the Windows search bar.
  2. Click the Open button.
  3. Select the Check for updates button.
  4. Windows will start looking for available updates.

3. Scan for Viruses

Malware can disrupt applications and disguise itself as a DLL file, preventing your software from operating. Running a virus scan can help identify and remove these threats.

  1. Type “Windows Security” in the Windows search box.
  2. Press the Open button.
  3. Choose the Virus & threat protection tab.
  4. Click on the Scan options link.
  5. Select the Microsoft Defender Offline scan option.
  6. Tap the Scan now button.
  7. Confirm by clicking the Scan button.
  8. The scan will then start.

4. Use System Restore

System Restore saves your system settings before software installations or Windows updates, allowing you to revert to previous settings if issues arise. If this error appeared recently, you could use System Restore to revert Windows settings to a working state.

Note: Restoring will delete any programs or updates installed after the restore point. Your passwords will also revert, so it’s recommended to create a password reset disk for Windows passwords.

  1. Type “Recovery” in the Windows search bar.
  2. Select the Open button.
  3. Choose the Open System Restore option.
  4. It will provide a recommended restore point for the most recent update or application installed.
  5. You can either continue with this option or select Choose a different restore point.
  6. Click the Next button.
  7. Check the Show more restore points list.
  8. Select the restore point when the DLL file was not missing and press the Next button.
  9. Click the Finish button to proceed.
  10. Press the Yes button to confirm.
