Fix: “You Disconnected From the Server” Error in Among Us

The “You disconnected from the server” error in Among Us appears when your device loses a stable connection with the game’s online servers. The game depends on a continuous, real-time data exchange to keep every player’s actions perfectly synchronized. When this connection drops, even briefly, the server instantly terminates the session for the affected player.

This issue often occurs during critical communication points:

  • While joining a lobby – when your device is establishing its initial handshake with the server.
  • During an active match – when real-time data is at its peak to keep all players synchronized.
  • Immediately after a game ends – when the server finalizes and transmits match results.

There are several variations of the disconnection error, each pointing to slightly different underlying issues. These messages often include technical details that can help identify the source of the problem:

  • “Reliable packet X was not ack’d after XXXXms (9 resends)”
  • “Sent X pings that remote has not responded to.”
  • “This may also be a server issue.”

Why This Error Happens?

This error can be triggered by issues on either the server side or the client side. In both cases, the connection between your device and the game server is interrupted, resulting in an instant disconnection.

  • Client-side issues – unstable internet, high latency, packet loss, version mismatches, or regional routing problems.
  • Server-side issues – server overload, throttling, scheduled maintenance, or timeouts.

How to Identify the Source of the Problem?

Before you begin troubleshooting, it’s important to determine whether the error is coming from the client or the server. This allows you to apply the right fix more effectively.

SourceIndicators
Client-side
  • Error affects only your connection.
  • Other players remain in the match without issues.
  • The problem may occur repeatedly on your device.
  • You may also notice lag or instability in other apps.
Server-side
  • Multiple players disconnect at the same moment.
  • Unable to join any lobby despite having a stable internet connection.
  • Problem appears suddenly and affects all players in the session.

By comparing your experience with these indicators, you can quickly determine whether the issue lies in your connection or on the game’s server and take the appropriate steps to fix it.

Once you’ve identified the source of the issue, respond accordingly:

  • Server-side issues: If the error originates from the server, there’s unfortunately nothing you can fix from your end. In this case, check the official server status or review community reports to stay updated on when the issue will be resolved.
  • Client-side issues: If the problem is on your end, try the step-by-step solutions below to restore a stable connection and prevent the error from reoccurring.
Note: There’s no single universal fix for this error. What works for one player may not work for another. However, by following the proven steps below carefully and in order, you significantly increase the chances of resolving the issue quickly. Although this guide focuses on computers, many of these solutions can also be applied to other devices.

Solution 1. Restart Your Router and Device

Restarting your router or modem resets your entire network connection, clearing temporary routing conflicts, IP address issues, and packet loss that may trigger disconnections. This forces your device to create a new, stable connection path to the game server.

Additionally, restarting your computer or gaming device resets the network adapter and connection state, clearing any cached or stuck configurations that may interfere with connectivity. This combined restart often works better than a simple network reset alone.

Solution 2. Switch to a More Stable Network

Among Us disconnects quickly if your network signal drops, even briefly. If you’re on Wi-Fi, switching to a wired Ethernet connection can offer a more stable and reliable link. If a wired connection isn’t possible, make sure your Wi-Fi signal is strong and interference-free. If your Wi-Fi remains unstable, try using your mobile 4G/5G network instead.

  • On phones, simply switch to mobile data.
  • On PC, you can connect your phone via USB tethering or set up a mobile hotspot. A stable temporary mobile network often works better than a weak Wi-Fi signal, reducing random disconnections.

Solution 3. Change DNS or Switch Server Region

Sometimes the issue lies not in your internet itself but in the path your data takes to reach the game’s servers. Slow or unreliable DNS resolution, or connecting to an overloaded region, can cause failed handshakes and sudden drops in Among Us.

A practical fix is to change your DNS settings to a public DNS like Google DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1). This can improve routing speed and stability.

On Android (Mobile)

Note: These steps are based on a Google Pixel device. Menu names may vary slightly on other Android phones.

  1. Go to SettingsNetwork & Internet.
  2. Tap AdvancedPrivate DNS.
  3. Select Private DNS provider hostname and enter: dns.google
Note: If dns.google doesn’t work in your region, try one.one.one.one (Cloudflare), dns.quad9.net (Quad9), or dns.adguard.com to find the most stable provider for your location.
  1. Save the changes and restart the game.

On Windows PC

  1. Open Settings → Network & Internet.
  2. Click your connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and select Edit under DNS settings.
  3. Switch DNS assignment to Manual and enable IPv4.
  4. Enter the following DNS servers:
    • Option 1 — Google DNS: Primary: 8.8.8.8, Secondary: 8.8.4.4
    • Option 2 — Cloudflare DNS: Primary: 1.1.1.1, Secondary: 1.0.0.1
  5. Save the settings.
  6. Restart the game to apply the new configuration.

You can also try changing the server region within the game itself. If your current region is overloaded, switching (e.g., from North America to Asia or Europe) can immediately restore a stable connection.

Open Among Us → go to OnlineRegion / Server and select a different region.

Solution 4. Verify Game Files (Steam Users Only)

If the game installation has missing or corrupted files, the client may struggle to maintain a stable connection. Verifying the integrity of game files can automatically detect and repair these files, often fixing the issue without requiring a full reinstall.

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Right-click Among UsProperties.
  3. Go to the Installed Files tab and click Verify integrity of game files.
  4. Wait for the verification to complete. If any files are corrupted or missing, Steam will automatically repair them.
