What is Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol and Should it be Enabled?

The Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol is listed in the “Items this connection uses” list for the Wifi Properties. This option is disabled for many people by default and it often gets them confused if disabling or enabling it has an effect on their connection or bandwidth. Actually enabling this protocol while the rest of the options in the list are enabled is not possible.

What is the Microsoft Adapter Multiplexor Protocol?

Microsoft Adapter Multiplexor Protocol is a special set of configurations that comes into play when a user combines two different connections. Actually, it is a kernel mode driver that is used for Network Interface Bonding. This means that two ethernet cards are combined to form one physical device in order to increase bandwidth.

When NIC teaming is initiated the Multiplexor Protocol is enabled for one or two (depending upon the connection and the number of network adapters connected) adapters while others still use other items from the list. Therefore, the Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol is used only while combining two or more adapters. Usually for a LAN/WAN connection.

Should It be Enabled?

Many users ask if they should enable it or not. Basically, this Protocol only comes into play while combining Network Adapters or creating a Bridged connection as explained above. If you try to enable this option manually while the other items in the list are enabled, you will see this error

The Error message is seen when trying to enable Multiplexor Protocol

If you click on “Yes” the protocol remains disabled and the other items are enabled for your connection. If you click on “No” it takes you back to the list and no changes are made. Even if you disable all other options and try to enable only the “Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol” it still shows this error. This means that it can’t be enabled unless a connection is introduced into a bridge. Therefore, it should not be enabled. It is automatically enabled when a bridge is created and doesn’t require manual activation.

I have a question regarding my Intel Windows 10 laptop WiFi. When speed test is run results are 8-9 mbps vs. 200 mbps. My mobile devises show the correct speed. I have verified all my WiFi router setting with Netgear, yet no results. Any suggestion or advise?

I have to internet service provider and two Ethernet cards on my computer, but when I make the bridge connection, I get on error, the bridge is made, but the option of the multiplexer protocol is unchecked. I have tried to enable it on my bridge connection unsuccessfully.

Maybe the internet connections are incapable of being bridged. Also, verify that all the drivers are installed properly and are updated. Also, check and verify that Windows is updated to the latest version.

God damn… thank you for answering a question about a fundamental function of Windows OS that Microsoft leaves to be very unclear to all of it’s users. I’ve seen this question and complication go unresolved for users for as long as that function has existed; it most definitely should be delimited from that list. If it get’s automatically initiated, it’s very stupid that it remains in that list of options and should only be resevered manageable for script, programming or powershell purposes.

If you are facing these kinds of issues with your computer, I suggest you do a full clean install of your Windows as the virus may be hidden in your work files or normal Windows files because sometimes viruses integrate themselves to the “.exe” files. Also, re-installing should fix the issues you are having, if you don’t want to re-install or clean install your Windows let me know which network adaptor you have.

It’s okay please follow these steps:-

      1. Click on the Search Bar of your Windows Where it says “Type here to search”.
      2. Now in that search box type “Command Prompt”. Open the Program named Command Prompt.
      3. Once that’s done there should be a black window opened on your computer.
      4. Inside that black window type this command as it is and then press the enter key on your keyboard:-

      netcfg -d

Note: This command will basically reset your Network settings and will most likely fix the issues you are having with you Network Adaptor.

If it doesn’t work for you and you still don’t have WiFi try disconnecting the ethernet cable and check to see if the WiFi shows up.
