How to Unsync Your Facebook and Instagram Accounts
Facebook‘s parent company, Meta, acquired Instagram in 2012. Since then, users have been able to connect the two platforms, enabling simultaneous posting and providing a more streamlined social networking experience overall.

However, the increased control over your personal information and browsing habits may outweigh the conveniences of linking your Instagram account to Facebook. Additionally, if either of your accounts becomes compromised, a hacker could gain access to both platforms at once—a significant security risk. These factors often motivate users to disconnect Instagram from Facebook.
Another common source of frustration is the duplicate notifications from both Facebook and Instagram whenever you receive a new message on Instagram. For many, there is little benefit in keeping the accounts linked unless specifically desired. If you connected both accounts by accident during setup or through a prompt, rest assured—it is easy to unlink them at any time by following the steps below.
How to Unlink Facebook and Instagram
- Access your profile by tapping the profile icon at the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Tap the three horizontal lines (menu icon) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings from the menu.
- Under the Meta logo, tap “Accounts Center” (displayed in blue).
- In the Accounts Center, tap “Accounts” under Account Settings.
- You will see a list of connected profiles, each with a prominent “Remove” button next to it.
- Tap Remove next to the Facebook profile you wish to disconnect from Instagram.
- Confirm your choice by tapping “Continue” when prompted.
That’s it! Follow any on-screen instructions to complete the process, and your Facebook and Instagram accounts will be unlinked. Once disconnected, your Instagram updates will no longer be shared automatically on Facebook, giving you greater control over your social media activity.
Using the Facebook Mobile App
If you prefer to manage these settings from Facebook instead of Instagram, you can unlink the accounts using the Facebook app. Both methods achieve the same result, simply in reverse order.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right to open the menu.
- Select the Settings icon.
- Scroll down until you see the Meta logo—underneath it, tap Accounts Center.
- Tap to access the Accounts Center.
From this point, follow the same steps outlined above for Instagram to remove the Instagram account integration from Facebook.
Limit Shared Content Instead of Unlinking Facebook and Instagram
Facebook also offers a flexible approach if you do not wish to fully disconnect the accounts. You can manually adjust which features are shared between Facebook and Instagram, allowing you to maintain certain connections without fully linking both profiles. This gives you the best of both worlds: connectivity where it helps, and privacy where you need it. To customize your sharing preferences:
- Open Accounts Center by following the steps outlined above.
- Under “Manage connected experiences“, tap “Sharing across profiles“.
- Select the connected account whose sharing settings you want to modify, such as your linked Facebook profile.
- Under “Automatically share“, choose whether to automatically share your Instagram stories and posts to Facebook.
- Return to the Accounts Center and select “Logging in with accounts“.
- Choose between the “Simple” or “Advanced” login methods, each offering different levels of control.
The Simple method allows any of your linked accounts to log in to each other. For example, you can use your Facebook account to log in to Instagram, and vice versa.
The Advanced method provides greater customization. You can control which accounts have permission to log into others individually by selecting an account and toggling access. This ensures you maintain precise control over your login and security preferences.
How to Remove Instagram Posts From Facebook
If you wish to remove previous Instagram posts from your Facebook profile, you have two practical options. You can manually delete each shared Instagram post, which may be time-consuming if you have many, or use the Activity Log to manage and delete posts more efficiently.
- Tap your profile picture to navigate to your profile, then tap the ellipsis button.
- From the main menu, select “Activity Log“.
- Go to the “Your Posts” section and select “Manage Your Posts“.
- Open the Filters menu, select Categories, and filter by content type if needed.
You can refine your search using categories to find all posts shared from Instagram. Select the relevant posts, then choose “Trash” from the contextual menu. Facebook’s 30-day auto-delete feature will move deleted posts to the trash bin and permanently remove them after that period.
