PlayStation 5 Has Now Surpassed 40 Million in Sales

Sony Interactive Entertainment has reached a significant milestone with its latest gaming console, the PlayStation 5, crossing the 40 million mark in units sold worldwide since its launch in November 2020.

We launched PlayStation 5 in November 2020, and the world was in a strange and different place than when we announced the console in 2019.

Despite the unprecedented challenges of COVID, our teams and our partners worked diligently to deliver PS5 on time. We continued to face headwinds with the pandemic, and it took months for supply chains to normalize so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand.”

The PlayStation 5 was launched during uncertain times due to the pandemic’s impact on electronic chip production, causing a halt in bulk manufacturing of gaming consoles. Despite facing challenges, the PlayStation 5 has competed well with its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, though it remains approximately 2 months behind in sales.

PlayStation 4 achieved the 40 million sales mark in just around 30 months, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation console to reach this milestone.

The recent stable supply of PlayStation 5 has led to a significant boost in sales, with an average of 1 million consoles sold per month since March 2023 when they reached around 36 million in total sales. And if we compare these sales to the same period in the previous year, 2022, there has been an impressive 116% increase, highlighting the console’s popularity.

Jim Ryan added,

For more months than I care to remember, we kept thanking our community for their patience while working through these issues. But now PS5 supply is well-stocked, and we are seeing that pent-up demand finally being met.”

The PlayStation 5’s impressive sales can be attributed to its extensive game catalog, featuring over 2,500 titles ranging from indie gems to AAA blockbusters. The platform has seen a surge of exciting releases in recent months, with highly-anticipated games like Final Fantasy XVI, Diablo IV, and Street Fighter 6 garnering significant attention.
