How to Output Audio to Multiple Devices in Windows 10

When trying to send audio to multiple devices in Windows 10, users often have problems where only one device plays sound, or the other device doesn’t play sound at all. This issue usually happens because Windows 10 doesn’t support playing audio on multiple devices at the same time without extra setup.

The problem generally comes from the missing or wrongly set up “Stereo Mix” feature, which is needed to share audio between devices. The most common cause is the Stereo Mix option being turned off or missing, which is needed for playing sound on two devices.

Other causes can include outdated audio drivers or wrong sound settings.

Lets discuss different ways to output audio on multiple devices.

1. Enable and Use Stereo Mix

To play audio on multiple devices in Windows 10, enable “Stereo Mix.” This feature lets your system duplicate audio to multiple devices simultaneously. It’s found in sound settings and allows sound output on both wired and wireless devices, providing more options.

  1. Right-click on Speaker icon on taskbar and click on Sounds.
  2. Select Speakers to set it as the default playback device by clicking on Select Default.
  3. Go to the Recording tab.
  4. Right-click on an empty space and select Show Disabled Devices.
  5. You should now see a recording device titled Wave Out Mix, Mono Mix, or Stereo Mix. Right-click on it and select Enable.
  6. After enabling it, right-click again and select Set as Default Device.
  7. Double-click on the Wave Out Mix, Mono Mix, or Stereo Mix entry and navigate to the Listen tab of the Properties dialog.
  8. Check the Listen to this device box and select your secondary audio output device from the Playback through this device dropdown menu.
  9. Click Apply and then OK.
  10. Restart your computer.

2. Use Voicemeeter

If you want better control over audio output, Voicemeeter offers a great solution. This software works like a virtual mixer, letting you send audio to multiple devices at once, something Windows 10 can’t do on its own. Voicemeeter creates virtual inputs and outputs, so you can send sound from any app to speakers, headphones, or other devices at the same time. By setting up Voicemeeter, you make it easier to control and balance sound across different devices.

You can download Voicemeeter for your computer here.

    Hello,
Thanks for the tip. Can you tell me if this works too with bluetooth ? I want to listen to the audio of my PC, wirelessly, from two bluetooth headphones (bose qc 35 ii and sony WH-1000XM3).

Not all Bluetooth devices can do this. It is up to your Bluetooth adapter. If it does not work buy Bluetooth 4.1 or newer gen adapter and it will work 🙂

Method 1 did not work for me. It created screeches and echoey output to one device only. I cannot give details of what I did because I do not understand how a recording device can cause output to another output device. The article does nothing to explain the necessary concepts of the “mixer”.

Simply connect both audio outputs, switch on mixer and select the secondary audio output on it. The first one doesn’t need any further config, unless you are using a bluetooth headset which changes to primary output when connected. It works.

After numerous attempts I almost gave up. I enabled “stereo” following the instructions, I have restarted the computer several times, and it still seemed necessary to choose a device by right clicking on the speaker icon on the bottom right hand side. However by going back once more to the menu “App volume and device preferences” and setting the “input” to Stereo Mix (why wasn’t this already enabled???) I was finally able to hear sound on both the computer and a remote bluetooth device.

Thank you for Voicemeter!I have two close range studio monitors, a high end mike hooked up to an high end usb audio box, .
Only the usb box shows up in WIndows 10! No monitor or speaker icon. Solution 1 is unavailable.
With Voicemeter, I can record live sessions in Windows outside my Daws (Cubase, Ableton). This feature has been in linux for nearly 10 years. Pulsaudio allows monitoring of any soundcard.

Theres a delay in the audio outputs from bluetooth and hdmi outputs when using Voicemeeter. Upon further examination i set it to 186ms and it should be perfect now (i have pretty good hearing and can pick up delays even if it’s absolutely tiny. Although my hearing gets me into trouble when there’s loud music, since my ears are sound sensitive.)

You need to find out the exact chipset of the sound card that you are using and download drivers from their website. Also if that doesn’t work do this:
          Open Device Manager.
          Click on Action.
          Choose Scan for hardware changes.
If that doesn’t work, run an SFC scan to ensure that there isn’t any issue with the registry/system files configuration.

Hello. I need to connect 20-30 headphones (bluetooth, wi-fi) at the same sound in the same time ( with posibility to change individually the volume). Can you recommend something?

      SW
Shane Warren Author Apr 17, 2020

You can connect the source to a FM Broadcaster and then ask the people to tune in to the frequency of the FM and listen to it but i don’t think there is any other method to connect so many headphones to a same source.

I used Voicemeeter. This way A1 sound good but A2 has awful sound (lagging low quality with distortion) how do I fix that?

      A2? can you please elaborate?

        IV
        Ivan Jun 13, 2020

Wow I solved it. I had A1 set to “seinheiser usb headset1” and A2 set to “seinheiser usb headset2” both of which were plugged into case’s front usb panel. Probably the “case’s motherboard_to_front_usb cable didn’t have enough throughput/power” for both headsets playing simultaneously. Plugged one of them into motherboard/case’s back.

Any way to connect 3 devices at once? I’m messing around with a handful of Bluetooth speakers, but it seems both of the proposed methods can only output to up to 2 devices

It really depends on the Bluetooth adaptor your computer has. Most of the time there can be up to 7 slaves device connected to a host Bluetooth device. So make sure that you are pairing the speakers from your computer to make sure that your computer is a host Bluetooth device try adding speakers one by one from the computer search for “Add a Bluetooth device” in your search bar.

I want to do the opposite of what this article talks about. Both my rear and front panel audio jacks are seen as the same device. If my headphones are plugged in, the desktop speakers are disabled. I don’t want to contently be unplugging my headphones when I want to use my desktop speakers. I just want to click on the speaker icon in the systray and select which device i want to output too.

Muhammad Zubyan Author Feb 17, 2021

Unfortunately, What you are asking for is not possible as it seems like your front and rear ports are both being powered by a single cable. What I suggest you do is buy a USB to audio jack convertor and use that to plug your desktop speakers.

My problem is I cannot get audio for the send to go through the usb port to my radio, do you think this is what I am missing to get the audio to my usb port.

So, now the challenge to forward separate channels (left/right)
