How to Download Netflix for Mac – 4 Different Ways
Are you wondering if you can watch Netflix on your Mac? Although there isn’t a dedicated Netflix app for Mac, you can still enjoy your favorite shows and movies. With over 238.4 million subscribers worldwide, Netflix remains a popular choice for entertainment. Many Mac users are curious about how to access Netflix directly on their devices, and this blog will guide you through various methods to do just that.
We’ll explore how to create web apps or shortcuts using Safari or Google Chrome, and we’ll also delve into using PlayCover as an alternative solution to run Netflix on Mac. Be cautious, though, as Netflix has yet to release an official app for Mac, even in 2023. Be wary of websites claiming to offer such an app, as they could be misleading or harmful to your device.
Previously, some unofficial apps in the App Store allowed viewing Netflix content on Mac. However, these have been removed by Apple due to their policy against apps that act as mere website wrappers. While an official Netflix app exists for iOS devices like the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, this does not extend to Macs.
Although there is no official Netflix app for Mac, some workarounds and features can help you replicate the app experience. Let us show you the ways to get Netflix on your Mac.
1. Saving Netflix Website as WEBLOC from Safari
WEBLOC is a file created by the Safari browser for website shortcuts. Here’s how you can add the Netflix website as WEBLOC from Safari:
- Open Safari and visit netflix.com.
- You’ll see a “Sign in” option, but don’t sign in. Instead, move your cursor to the top of the Safari window and drag it down.
- Click and hold the URL, then drag and drop it to your desktop.
- A file labeled “WEBLOC” will appear on your desktop.
- To change the icon to the Netflix logo, open a new tab in Safari and search for a transparent Netflix logo in Google Images. After downloading the logo you like, return to the WEBLOC file, right-click on it, and select “Get info.”
- Drag the Netflix logo from your browser to the open window, and drop it where it says “Add tags.”
- You’re done! You have now saved the Netflix website as a Webloc file from Safari which will give the illusion of a native Netflix app.
2. Saving Netflix website as a Web App from Safari
If you own one of the more recent Macs and have the latest macOS Sonoma installed, you can create a Web App for Netflix, which will basically serve as a glorified website shortcut. Here’s how:
- Open Safari web browser and go to Netflix.com.
- Click the Share icon at the top-right corner and select “Add to Dock.”
- The shortcut will automatically get its name and icon from the internet, but you can change these to whatever you like.
- After customizing, click the “Add” button, and the website will be added to your Dock like an app.
3. Saving Netflix website as a Shortcut from Google Chrome
If you have an older Mac that doesn’t get the Sonoma update, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered as well. Google Chrome offers a universal solution for this method, which works on every version and model of Mac.
Here are the steps to create a Netflix website app using Chrome:
- Open Google Chrome and go to netflix.com.
- Find and click the menu (three dots) in the top right corner. Hover your mouse over “More Tools and choose “Create Shortcut.”
- You can rename the shortcut and check the option to “Open as Window“, then click “Create.”
- This creates a Netflix shortcut that looks like an app even though it’s open in a browser.
You can then move the app to your Dock for easy access. Just click and hold on the app and drag it to the Dock.
Run Netflix on Mac using PlayCover (M1/M2/M3 Macs Only)
PlayCover is a free project that lets you use iOS apps and games on Apple Silicon M1, M2, and M3 Macs. It supports all macOS versions, including Ventura and Monterey. It wraps the Netflix app from iOS in a way that works on these Macs.
Here’s how to set it up:
- Visit PlayCover’s GitHub page.
- Scroll down until you see the downloadable file under “Assets,” and click it to start the download.
- Open the downloaded file and drag the PlayCover app to your applications folder.
Now, you’ve installed PlayCover. Next, you need a special version of the Netflix app from sites like ARM Converter and Decrypt and add it to PlayCover. Here’s how to do it:
- Find Netflix on one of those sites, click “Download Now,” and wait for the file. You might need to turn off your ad-blocker.
- Drag the downloaded file into PlayCover.
- PlayCover will extract the IPA file and set up Netflix as a separate application on your Mac.
- Open the Netflix app you just created. “Sign in,” and start watching.
