Apple’s ‘Blue’ MacBook Air is Its First Non-Neutral Color Notebook in 25 Years

Apple gave MacBook Air its due M4 upgrade today, but the announcement came with more than one surprise. Along with dropping the base price to $999, the company also introduced a “striking” new colorway to its traditionally least colorful product line—Sky Blue.
MacBooks Have Traditionally Avoided Bold Colorways
For decades, the Cupertino tech giant’s notebook lineup, specifically with the MacBooks, had avoided vibrant or bold color options, sticking mostly to neutral tones like silver, space gray, and starlight. This was pointed out multiple times on online forums, but the consensus seemed to be that Apple targeted a more “professional” demographic with the MacBook lineup.

Well, this time around, that seems to have changed. After nearly two and a half decades, the company has finally introduced a somewhat bold color, surprisingly doing so while phasing out its iconic “Space Gray.” The older “Silver” still remains, but the change is refreshing, to say the least.
After the iBook G3, the M4 Air Is the First to Sport Blue
The last time Apple had a non-neutral color on one of its notebooks was all the way back in 1999, well before the first MacBooks were released. The “Clamshell” iBook G3 came with a Blueberry color, which still is a lot “bolder” than the newest Air’s sky blue, as can be seen in the image comparison above.

One could argue that there were a whole plethora of striking color options and that Apple didn’t really hold back with its rounded, colorful plastic casing. The other colors that came with that model were Tangerine, Graphite, Indigo, and Key Lime. Interestingly, with the iBook, Apple was targeting the student demographic, which is again one of the target audiences for the M4 Air.

With Apple’s newest release, it can be inferred that the company may look to add a variety of color options to its lineup. At this point, the M4 Air comes in four colors: Sky Blue, Silver, Starlight, and Midnight. Pre-orders are open, and the laptop will hit shelves March 12.
