How to Setup a Custom Power Plan on Windows 10

A power plan defines how Windows will manage power for different components and devices attached to the computer. Realizing that every user uses the computer in a slightly different way, Windows lets you customize the utilization of power. There are tons of things you can do while changing the power settings. For example: You can increase battery performance if you’re on laptop and the laptop is not connected to the charger, or if you are on the charger you can set it to high performance, etc. The aim of this guide is to get you started with setting up a custom power plan to fit your needs.

To get to power plan options, Right click on the Start menu and select Power Options on the popup menu. You can access the same popup menu by pressing Win+X keyboard shortcut.

Alternatively, right click the battery icon in the notification area (bottom right of your computer screen), and click Power Options. Both methods will lead you to the same Power Options screen.

Note: if you are using a touch screen device, touch the item with your finger or stylus and hold gently. When you lift your finger or stylus, you will see the right-click menu.

Windows 10 has three predefined power plans: Balanced, Power saver and High Performance. You can click Change Plan Settings, to view the settings and customize it or you can use the one that you like.
