Hideki Kamiya Opens Up About Departure from PlatinumGames and Future Plans
Game developer and Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya bid farewell to PlatinumGames in September 2023, leaving fans worldwide in shock. As one of the studio’s founding members and its Vice-President, Kamiya’s departure marked the end of an era. However, the renowned developer has since addressed the situation with his trademark humor, engaging with fans through his newly established YouTube channel.
Recently, IGN Japan sat down with Kamiya in Osaka to delve into the reasons behind his departure from PlatinumGames, his YouTube channel plans, and the upcoming joint interview with his Capcom mentor, Shinji Mikami.
Why Leave PlatinumGames?
Kamiya explained,
My work with PlatinumGames was based on a relationship of trust with the company. I decided to leave because I felt that the direction the company was heading in was different from my beliefs as a developer.”
He emphasized his view of games as works of art and expressed the desire to create games that reflect his unique style.
The Farewell and Reactions
Regarding his departure’s aftermath, Kamiya shared,
The reaction from the development teams was different. I never took my role at the company lightly, but I realized at that moment that they trusted me more deeply than I had expected.”
He acknowledged the sadness among the team members but asserted that he doesn’t regret his decision.
Future Game Development
While constrained by contractual obligations for the next year, Kamiya shared his plan to involve fans in his game development process through the YouTube channel once the hiatus ends. He stressed his commitment to creating games that players can enjoy as “Hideki Kamiya games.“
