Helldivers 2 Revealed, Coming Late 2023
Sony published the original Helldivers for PlayStation, and the PC version launched on Steam in 2015 under Sony’s imprint. Until Horizon Zero Dawn ushered in the new era of PlayStation games on PC in 2020, it was one of just three Sony-published games on Steam, the other two being indies.
Sony just revealed the game’s sequel at their 2023 Showcase live stream. A public trailer was released, and it appears that the developers were given ample time to polish the game. This game will feature a third-person perspective, which is different from the isometric view of the camera in the first one.
The events of Helldivers took place on a planet named “Super Earth,” and the player took the role of a regular person who enlisted in a commando force to fight aliens across the planet’s many ecosystems. It was quickly compared to Starship Troopers, both the 1959 novel and the 1997 Paul Verhoeven film, with the latter receiving a nod in the form of a propaganda video at the film’s outset.
Developer Arrowhead Game Studios wrote on the PlayStation Blog that Helldivers 2 will allow players to summon ridiculously powerful backup weapons in an effort to maintain the chaotic bombast of the arcade-style original. Writes Arrowhead:
“In the heat of the battle and your squad needs to take out a massive onslaught of Terminids in one go? You can have an Eagle drop a 500KG bomb, leaving behind only liberated bug corpses. Need to lay down a defensive perimeter? You can call for the Anti-Personnel Mine Deployer to layer the battlefield with deadly mines.”
No firm release date has been set, but the game is coming to PC and PS5 this year.
