Fix: “Halo Infinite Incompatible Operating System” Error Using these Methods

There is an error message revolving around Halo Infinite that appears when players try to launch the game. Upon doing so, an error message stating “Incompatible operating system” appears which prevents the game from launching. As is obvious from the error message itself, this message appears when your Windows is not up to date and you are trying to run the game on an older version that is not supported. However, that is not always the case as multiple users get this error message even when the operating system has been updated. In this article, we are going to show you how to get rid of the issue in question so just follow through.

Halo Infinite Incompatible Operating System Error

As it turns out, Halo Infinite multiplayer has been released earlier than expected in order to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Xbox. While the game has been working just fine for most of the users, there are some who were left with an incompatible operating system error upon trying to open up the game. Apart from the obvious reason which is also stated in the error message, this issue can occur sometimes due to outdated chipset drivers that you can download from your manufacturer’s website. With that said, however, the issue is usually due to an outdated Windows 10 version that you are running on your system in which case you will have to download the Windows Fall Creator update. Without any further ado, let us get started and show you how you can resolve the error message in question by following the different available methods.

Check Compatibility Mode

The first thing that you should do when you encounter the incompatible operating system error while playing Halo Infinite is to check the properties of the Steam client and the game. As it turns out, Windows has a compatibility mode that allows you to run applications on your computer as they would on older operating systems. While this is a really helpful feature, it can cause some compatibility issues in some cases when the option is enabled.

Therefore, the first thing that you need to do is check if compatibility is enabled for Halo Infinite or not. In case it is not enabled, you can try enabling it and then see if the issue persists. In case it is already enabled, turn it off and then try playing the game. You will have to do this for the Steam client as well since that’s what actually starts up the game. To do this, follow the instructions given down below:

  1. First of all, open up the Steam client.
  2. On the Steam client, open up the Library.
    Navigating to Steam Library
  3. Now, from the list of games in your Library, right click on Halo Infinite and from the drop down menu, choose Manage > Browse Local Files.
    Opening up Game Installation Directory
  4. This will open up the installation directory of the game in a File Explorer window.
  5. Right click on the HaloInfinite.exe file and choose Properties from the drop down menu.
    Opening up App Properties
  6. On the Properties window, switch to the Compatibility tab.
  7. Once you are there, check if Run this program in compatibility mode for option is ticked.
    Checking Compatibility Mode
  8. In case it is, go ahead and untick it. Otherwise, click on the checkbox to tick it and then from the drop down menu, make sure Windows 10 is selected.
  9. Click Apply and then click OK.
  10. You will have to do this for the Steam client as well so navigate to where Steam is installed and repeat the same process.
  11. Once you have done that, go ahead and open up the game to see if the error message still appears.

Install Windows Updates

In case compatibility mode does not fix the problem for you, then you will have to make sure that your operating system is up to date as per the error message by installing Windows updates. As it turns out, Halo Infinite has a minimum requirement of Windows 10 RS5 so the version of your operating system matters a bunch. In addition to that, Windows updates are important as they often contain security patches that fix vulnerability issues and overall improves the system stability by fixing several bugs.

In case your copy of Windows is not up to update, you can update it pretty easily. To do this, follow the instructions that are given down below:

  1. To start off, open up Microsoft’s webpage for Windows 10 by clicking here.
  2. Once you are there, click on the Update now button provided.
    Downloading Windows Installation Assistant
  3. This will download the Installation Assistant on your computer.
  4. After the download is complete, go ahead and run the installation assistant and follow the on screen prompts to update your system.
  5. Once you are through that, restart your system and then try launching the game to see if the error message is still there.

Install Chipset Drivers

Finally, if the above methods do not help you in resolving the error message, in such a case, you can try to update your chipset drivers. This has been provided by a player who was facing the error message in question and was unable to solve it with the usual methods. Chipset drivers are important as they are used by the operating system in order to communicate with the motherboard. It essentially allows your operating system to better operate with the motherboard in your PC.

While it may sound a bit difficult, chipset drivers are really easy to download and install. You simply need to head to your processor manufacturer’s website and download the drivers from there. You can simply Google chipset drivers along with the name of your processor manufacturer which will take you automatically to the web pages for downloading chipset drivers. Once you have downloaded them, install them on your computer and then perform a restart. After your PC boots up, open up Halo Infinite to see if the “incompatible operating system” error message still appears.
