Fix: “An Error Occurred While Connecting to Epic Servers” ESP-DIST-001

Fortnite can stop before the lobby with “An error occurred while connecting to Epic servers. Please try again later. ESP-DIST-001”. The important clue is where the message appears. Fortnite has opened, but it has not finished the early connection check with Epic’s login, game-service, or matchmaking systems.

Fortnite startup screen showing the ESP-DIST-001 connection error before the game fully loads.

It is not saying your account is banned or that the whole install is definitely broken. Epic classifies ESP-DIST and ESP-DIST-001 as connection-related errors.

The failed connection can sit outside your device, inside a stale console session, in your home network, or in the PC launcher/firewall path.

If Fortnite never opens far enough to show the ESP-DIST-001 screen, handle that as a separate Fortnite won’t launch problem first.

1. Check Epic Games Status Before Changing Local Settings

When Epic login, game services, or matchmaking are degraded, Fortnite can show this startup error because it cannot get a valid response from the service it needs next.

Epic’s ESP errors page says server outages can cause ESP errors, and its public status page separates Fortnite into services such as login, game services, and matchmaking.

This check is worth doing before router resets or file repair because nothing on your device can repair a live Epic-side incident.

This outage check is not needed when Epic Status is already operational and only your device is failing. In that case, move into the local device or network checks below.

  1. Open the official Epic Games Public Status page.
  2. Expand or review the Fortnite section.
  3. Check Login, Game Services, Matchmaking, and any active incident notice.
  4. If those services are degraded, wait until Epic marks them operational before changing your device or router.
  5. If Fortnite services are normal, continue with the device or network path that matches where you play.

A live Fortnite outage can produce the same ESP error code that a local network issue does.

2. On Consoles, Clear Cache and Then Power Cycle Fully

On PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, ESP-DIST-001 often appears after Fortnite or the console keeps stale startup or network state from a suspended session.

Epic’s console ESP-DIST guidance points to cache clearing first. If the cache reset does not clear the error, Epic recommends a proper power cycle for the console.

Closing Fortnite from the dashboard is weaker than this. Cache clearing and a full power cycle force the console to rebuild the launch session instead of retrying the same failed one.

This cache and power-cycle step is not needed when ESP-DIST-001 appears on Windows. Use the PC launcher and firewall checks later in the article instead.

  1. Close Fortnite completely rather than reopening it from a suspended state.
  2. On PlayStation, use the PlayStation cache-clear option that Epic links from its cache guide.
  3. On Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X, fully shut down the console and unplug it.
  4. On Nintendo Switch, use System Settings > System > Formatting Options > Reset Cache for the profile you use with Fortnite.

On consoles, Epic points to cache clearing first because ESP-DIST-001 often appears after stale session or network cache data builds up.
  5. If the cache clear does not work, turn the console fully off, unplug power for about two minutes, reconnect it, and boot normally.
  6. Launch Fortnite from a fresh start, not from Quick Resume, rest mode, or a suspended tile.
Fortnite player fully power cycling a console after clearing cache did not remove ESP-DIST-001.
Power cycling helps when the console keeps a bad network or suspended game state across normal restarts.

3. Restart the Network Path and Test Another Connection

ESP-DIST-001 is still a connection error when Epic is online and the console or PC state is clean. The next question is whether Fortnite fails only on your normal network.

Epic’s connection troubleshooting recommends restarting network hardware, switching to public DNS, checking device cache, disabling proxy services, flushing DNS, and keeping Windows updated.

Epic’s ESP page also tells players to restart the modem/router, disable VPN or proxy services, and test a different connection such as a mobile hotspot.

A hotspot test is especially useful because it separates Fortnite itself from your router, ISP route, DNS, NAT, or local network policy.

  1. Restart your modem and router, then wait until the connection is stable again.
  2. Turn off any VPN, proxy, traffic filter, or custom DNS tool for the test.
  3. If possible, use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
  4. Test Fortnite on a mobile hotspot or a different network.
  5. On console, run the built-in network test and look for packet loss, strict NAT behavior, or unstable connectivity.
Router restart and console network test being used to troubleshoot Fortnite ESP-DIST-001.
If Fortnite works on a hotspot but not on your normal internet connection, the ESP error is usually outside the game itself.

If your real symptom is Fortnite sitting on an update screen before the ESP message appears, treat that as an update-loop issue rather than this exact startup handshake error.

4. On Nintendo Switch, Set MTU to 1500 Before Changing More Settings

Nintendo Switch has one extra ESP-DIST-001 step that does not apply to every platform.

Epic’s ESP guidance specifically tells Switch players to set MTU to 1500. MTU controls packet size; if the connection path handles packets poorly, Fortnite can fail during the early service handshake even though the Switch still appears online.

Try MTU first. Public DNS is a reasonable follow-up only if the Switch still fails after MTU and the network test.

  1. Open System Settings on Nintendo Switch.
  2. Go to Internet > Internet Settings.
  3. Select your active network and choose Change Settings.
  4. Highlight MTU, change it to 1500, and save.
  5. Launch Fortnite again.
  6. If ESP-DIST-001 remains, test a public DNS provider such as Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS, then retest Fortnite.

Epic specifically calls out MTU 1500 on Switch and public DNS changes when the normal connection path stays unreliable.

5. On PC, Reset Epic Games Launcher Cache, DNS, and Fortnite Local Data

On Windows, ESP-DIST-001 can appear before Fortnite reaches the lobby even when Epic’s servers and your internet connection are fine.

Epic’s ESP article points PC players to launcher admin mode, launcher cache clearing, DNS flush, at least 10 GB of free space, removing the local FortniteGame folder, verifying files, and in some cases installing Fortnite on the same drive as the Epic Games Launcher.

The PC repair sequence rebuilds three separate pieces before a full reinstall: the launcher’s cached web/session data, Windows DNS lookups, and Fortnite’s local startup configuration.

Only remove the FortniteGame folder under %localappdata% for this step. Do not delete the main Fortnite installation folder unless you are intentionally reinstalling the game.
  1. Close Fortnite and exit Epic Games Launcher from the system tray.
  2. Make sure the drive where Fortnite is installed has at least 10 GB of free space.
  3. Right-click Epic Games Launcher and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Clear the launcher cache by opening %localappdata%, then deleting EpicGamesLauncher > Saved > webcache folders that appear. Epic’s launcher cache guide lists the same webcache folders.
  5. Flush Windows DNS using Epic’s DNS reset steps, then restart the PC.
  6. If the error remains, close Fortnite and the launcher again, open %localappdata%, and delete the FortniteGame folder.
  7. Open Epic Games Launcher > Library > Fortnite > three dots > Manage > Verify. If you need the broader repair flow, use this Appuals guide on verifying game files.
  8. If Fortnite is installed on a different drive from the launcher and every other PC step fails, reinstall Fortnite on the same drive as Epic Games Launcher for one clean test.

On PC, ESP-DIST-001 can come from the launcher cache, DNS path, or local file state instead of the game servers alone.

6. Update Bitdefender or Allow Fortnite Through the Firewall

Bitdefender has documented the exact ESP-DIST-001 message on PC, including the line “An error occurred while connecting to Epic servers. Please try again later.”

When the firewall blocks Fortnite or Easy Anti-Cheat traffic, the PC can reach the internet normally while Fortnite still fails its Epic-server handshake.

Bitdefender says the firewall can block or restrict Fortnite and anti-cheat components from communicating with Epic servers. Epic’s ESP page also points Bitdefender users to that official Bitdefender fix and separately notes that antivirus, firewall, or security software can block the connection.

Do not leave the firewall disabled as the fix. The safer test is to update Bitdefender first, then add allow rules for the specific Fortnite and anti-cheat executables if the update has not corrected the problem.

This branch is not needed when you are playing on console or when the PC has no third-party firewall/security suite. Console players do not need these executable rules.

  1. Open Bitdefender and install available product updates first. Bitdefender’s ESP-DIST-001 support page says updated builds may remove the need for manual rules.
  2. If the error remains, open Protection > Firewall > Settings > Rules.
  3. Add an allow rule for FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe.
  4. If Fortnite still fails, add the related files Bitdefender lists, including FortniteLauncher.exe, FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping_EAC.exe, and EasyAntiCheat_EOS.exe.
  5. Set the rule to Allow, with Any network, Any protocol, and Both directions where Bitdefender asks for those choices.
  6. If you use another antivirus firewall, create equivalent allow/trust rules instead of turning protection off permanently.
  7. If your router or firewall blocks Epic traffic more broadly, Epic’s port-unblocking guide lists the ports used by Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite.

If Bitdefender blocks Fortnite or Easy Anti-Cheat traffic, ESP-DIST-001 can appear even when your internet connection itself is fine.
