Fix: Your Windows License Will Expire Soon Error on Windows 10

This particular error can be quite annoying to say the least, especially if you genuinely updated to Windows 10 from an older version of Windows. According to Microsoft’s policy you should have been able to update to Windows 10 from your old OS and keep the activation key you purchased for the old OS.

Sometimes that is not the case and the error is actually caused by the fact that the system is viewing the installation of Windows 10 as a standalone installation of a new operating system and that is why you are seeing the ““Your Windows License Will Expire Soon” error message since you get a three-month trial period after you install Windows.

Follow the instructions below in order to fix this issue.

Solution 1: Use a Command in Command Prompt

This solution actually lets you use a command which can be used to reset the trial time (which is usually around three months) and it lets you use Windows 10 normally as if the trial period is still undergoing.

The “slmgr” tool can be used for a variety of other things such as deleting your product key, viewing information about your license, etc.

  1. Open Command Prompt by clicking on the Start menu or the search button right next to it and typing Command Prompt. Right-click on the first result and choose the Run as administrator option.

  1. Type in the command below and make sure you click Enter after you type it in.

slmgr –rearm

  1. You will be prompted to restart your computer within a minute and the activation timer will be set to allow you 30 more days of trial use. However, you can’t use this forever as you can only use this three times.
  2. The next thing you want to do is open the Registry Editor by typing this in the search bar. You can also open the Run dialog box and type “regedit”.

  1. After you open the Registry Editor, navigate to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Currentversion\SL

  1. Locate the SkipRearm key and change its value to 1, by right-clicking and choosing the Modify option.

  1. Open Command Prompt by clicking on the Start menu or the search button right next to it and typing Command Prompt. Right-click on the first result and choose the Run as administrator option.

  1. Type in the command below and make sure you click Enter after you type it in.

slmgr –rearm

  1. This way you can prolong the time you have available for your trial period 8 more times by repeating the process above, giving you a total of 360 days!

Solution 2: The Product Key Was Not Applied Successfully

This solution might be particularly helpful for users whose Windows 10 OS came preinstalled on their laptops. They receive this annoying message but there seems to be nothing wrong in the Settings app. There is an option to change the product key but the users struggle to find it as the OS came preinstalled. Follow the steps below:

  1. Open Command Prompt by clicking on the Start menu or the search button right next to it and typing Command Prompt. Right-click on the first result and choose the Run as administrator option.

  1. Type in the command below and make sure you click Enter after you type it in.

wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey

  1. You will then be able to see your original Product Key so make sure you copy it or write it down since you will need it in the following steps.
  2. Navigate to the following location on your computer in order to change your product key:

Start > Settings > Update & security > Activation > Change the product key

  1. Type in or copy the product key you received and you should have no more issues if we assume you have the correct version of Windows 10 installed on your computer.

Note: This process sometimes doesn’t work and users have reported that it’s quite buggy. Luckily, there is another way to approach this using phone activation of Windows. Follow the steps below in order to activate Windows 10 by phone:

  1. Open the Run dialog box by using the Windows Key + R key combination.
  2. When the Run dialog box opens, type Slui 4 and click OK to run it.

  1. A screen should appear asking you to choose your country or region. Make sure you choose the correct one because of the phone call later on.
  2. You will need to provide your Installation ID by reading it out loud during the call and you will be provided with your Confirmation ID which should be enough to activate your copy of Windows.

  1. You will also have to read out your Confirmation ID out loud just to double check whether you typed it in properly.
  2. Click on the Activate button which should resolve all issues regarding your Windows OS.
  3. Don’t forget to restart your computer just in case!

Solution 3: Use Media Creation Tool to Reset Your PC and Install the Latest Update

Several users have reported that resetting their PC using Media Creation Tool with the option to preserve their files actually got rid of the nasty error code. The error for them appeared after a major Windows 10 update even though they were using a genuine installation of Windows with a proper license key. Follow the steps below for more help:

  1. Click on this link in order to go to Microsoft, and click on the Download tool now button located at the Microsoft’s site in order to download the Media Creation Tool.

  1. Download the MediaCreationTool.exe file to your desktop or some other convenient location and run it.
  2. If the UAC (User Account Control) pop-up message appears, click Yes and follow the instructions in order to install the tool correctly. It shouldn’t be difficult.
  3. On the License terms page, select Accept if you accept the license terms.
  4. On the “What do you want to do?” page, select Upgrade this PC now and then select Next.

  1. The tool will start downloading and then installing Windows 10 promptly.
  2. When Windows 10 is ready to install, you’ll see a recap of what you’ve chosen and what will be kept during the upgrade. Select Change what to keep to set whether you would like to Keep personal files and apps, or Keep personal files only, or choose to keep Nothing during the upgrade. We recommend you keep everything.

  1. Save and close any open apps and files you may be running and, when you’re ready, select Install.
  2. It might take some time to install Windows 10, and your PC will restart a few times. Make sure you don’t turn your PC off.
