How to Fix OneDrive Error 0x80071129 in Windows?

The error 0x80071129 occurs due to a problem with the reparse point resulting from the usage of the Files On-Demand feature. The Files On Demand feature allows users to reach files from anywhere without downloading them to the device, thus saving a significant amount of storage and making the feature quite beneficial.

In the background, this feature creates a reparse point in the device that directs to the actual file on the OneDrive. So, when you make changes to the file, like deleting or editing it on your device, the computer becomes unsure about whether it needs to make a change to the shortcut reparse point or the actual file in OneDrive.

This confusion leads to error code 0x80071129 with the message, The tag present in the reparse point buffer is invalid.

Before we proceed to the solutions, it’s recommended that you restart your computer and retry. If the issue is ongoing, the following solutions will help solve it.

1. Remove the File from OneDrive

The first step to resolve the error message is to remove the file causing the problem. Simply log into OneDrive, pause the sync for 2 hours, and then remove the file. After completing this, restart your computer, and the problem should be solved. Now, you can continue the Sync once the problem is solved. You can follow the same steps if you wish to edit the file.

2. Execute the CHDSK Command

When you enable the Files On-Demand feature, it creates reparse points for the synced files and folders. When you disconnect the OneDrive or stop syncing the library, OneDrive removes all the reparse points. However, some reparse points might not be removed and become invalid, resulting in OneDrive returning this error message. So, we will use the CHDSK command to remove all the invalid reparse points.

  1. Press the Win key and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  3. Once you are in admin mode, type the following command:
    chkdsk <volume> /R /F

  4. If you see, “Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) ”, press Y to restart the computer to execute the command.
  5. Once finished, check if the issue is solved or still occurring.

3. Reset the OneDrive

If the error is ongoing, try resetting the OneDrive to remove the application and cache data that might get corrupted and cause this problem.

  1. Press the Win key and type Add or Remove programs in the search bar.
  2. Search for OneDrive from the installed apps. Then, click the three dots and select Advanced Options.
  3. Scroll down to the Reset button and click Reset to start the process.
  4. Once done, log into OneDrive and then check if the problem is resolved.

4. Install the OneDrive again

Lastly, if nothing helps solve the problem, you can try reinstalling the OneDrive to check if there are any corrupted files causing this problem.

  1. Open up the Start Menu and type Add or Remove programs. Press Enter to open the settings.
  2. Here, simply locate OneDrive, click the three dots, and select Uninstall.
  3. Click Uninstall again to remove OneDrive.
  4. Now open the Microsoft Store to download and install OneDrive.
  5. Once done, log into OneDrive and see if the problem is resolved.
