How to Delete Reddit Account Permanently?

Just like any other social platform, Reddit provides an option to delete accounts. However, deleting an account on Reddit works a bit differently compared to other platforms. Additionally, some data won’t be removed by simply deleting the account. In this article, you’ll learn everything about how to delete a Reddit account and understand what data will be removed.

There are some important considerations before deleting your account. Before you proceed, check the potential impacts of this action. Here’s what will happen once you delete your Reddit account:

• Your Profile will be permanently removed from Reddit: All your profile information, such as karma, avatar, cake day, and the history of your posts/comments, will be removed. People searching for you through a URL will see a message that the account has been deleted.
• Your Username will be permanently removed from Reddit: Once the account is deleted, your username will be gone forever, and no one will be able to create an account with that username again.
• Your Messages and Chats will become unattributed: Your messages and chats will remain on Reddit, but your username and avatar will not be visible.
• Your Posts and Comments will become unattributed: Similarly, your posts and comments will stay on Reddit, but others won’t see your username or avatar.

For content that won’t be automatically removed with the account, you need to delete it manually. This includes messages, chats, posts, and comments, which must be removed manually. If not, they will remain on Reddit, visible to others.

How to Delete Your Reddit Account

On Reddit, you won’t find an option specifically labeled as “delete account.” Instead, there’s an option for deactivation in the user settings, which effectively works as account deletion. Once you deactivate your Reddit account, you cannot reactivate it.

1. Open your browser and visit the Reddit website. Log in to your account if you’re not already logged in.
2. Click on your username at the top right corner and select the User Settings option.

   

3. In the Account Settings tab, scroll to the bottom and click on the Deactivate Account button, which is in red.

   

4. A dialog box will appear. Enter your username, password, and check the “I understand…” option. Then click on the Deactivate button.

   

5. For confirmation, click the Deactivate Account button again to finalize removing the account.

You can also delete your Reddit account on your phone, but note that the Deactivate Account option isn’t available on the Reddit app for phones. You’ll need to use a browser on your phone to log in to your account and follow the steps above to deactivate it.
