How to Fix “Critical Low Memory Error” in Skate (PC)

The Critical Low Memory Error in Skate appears when the game cannot reserve enough RAM for its assets and processes, causing stuttering, freezes, or a complete crash.

Most commonly, this issue is caused by unoptimized game assets, too many background applications running (browsers, Discord, overlays, recorders, RGB tools), and very high graphics settings such as ray tracing or ultra textures that increase demand on CPU, GPU, VRAM, and RAM.

In other cases, corrupted asset files, an outdated shader cache, GPU driver updates, Windows updates, or leftover data from old mods can cause memory mismatches and force the game into a low-memory state.

1. Close Background Processes

Apps such as overlays, RGB software, Discord, browsers, and recording tools can silently consume significant RAM and CPU. Closing unnecessary tasks frees resources for Skate and helps prevent memory spikes.

  1. Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager.
  2. Open the Processes tab.
  3. Look for non-essential applications (Discord, browsers, overlays, recorders, RGB tools).
  4. Right-click each unwanted process and select End task.

2. Clear Shader Cache and Temporary Game Data

Corrupted or outdated shader and config files can cause Skate to load invalid resources, increasing RAM usage or creating memory leaks. Clearing this folder forces the game to rebuild fresh files, which often improves stability.

  1. Press Windows + R to open Run.
  2. Type: %localappdata%
  3. Scroll and locate the Skate folder.
  4. Right-click it and select Delete.
  5. Launch the game again; Skate will automatically regenerate new shader/config files.

3. Disable Crossplay

Crossplay adds extra overhead because the game must handle cross-platform compatibility layers, additional network checks, and more complex matchmaking logic. Disabling it reduces background processes and can improve stability on some systems.

  1. Launch Skate.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select the General tab.
  4. Scroll down and turn Crossplay Off.

4. Lower Graphics Settings

Ultra textures, ray tracing, heavy shadows, and high post-processing dramatically increase VRAM usage. When VRAM fills up, the game spills workload onto RAM, causing memory spikes. Lowering these settings reduces overall system load.

  1. Open Skate and go to Settings.
  2. Navigate to the Graphics tab.
  3. Apply the following recommended settings:
    • Texture Quality: Medium or Low
    • Shadows: Low Resolution
    • Anti-Aliasing: Off
    • Ray Tracing: Disabled
    • Ambient Occlusion: Off
    • Reflections: Low or Medium

5. Verify and Repair Game Files

Damaged or missing game assets can cause RAM leaks or force the game to load corrupted data. Verifying the files restores missing or corrupted content without reinstalling the entire game.

  1. Open the EA App or Steam.
  2. Go to your Library.
  3. Right-click Skate and select Properties.
  4. Open the Installed Files tab.
  5. Click Verify integrity of game files.
  6. Wait for the scan to complete, then relaunch the game.

6. Increase Virtual Memory (Paging File)

If Skate or Windows temporarily spikes above your physical RAM, virtual memory acts as a backup space. Increasing it prevents crashes caused by sudden memory surges.

Recommended Virtual Memory Size Examples:

8GB RAM → Initial: 12288 MB | Max: 24576 MB
16GB RAM → Initial: 24576 MB | Max: 49152 MB
32GB RAM → Initial: 49152 MB | Max: 98304 MB
  1. Search for View advanced system settings and open it.
  2. Under the Advanced tab, click Settings in the Performance section.
  3. Go to the Advanced tab and click Change under Virtual memory.
  4. Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size.
  5. Select your main drive and choose Custom size.
  6. Use the recommended values above or the formula provided.
  7. Click SetOK → restart your PC.

7. Reinstall Skate (Clean Installation)

If you use mods, have moved files, or experienced interrupted updates, some core files may be broken. A clean reinstall removes corrupted elements completely.

Good news: Skate uses cloud saves, so uninstalling the game does not delete your progress.

  1. Open your launcher (EA App, Steam, etc.).
  2. Go to your Library and right-click Skate.
  3. Select Manage → Uninstall.
  4. After uninstalling, manually delete leftover files from:
    • Program Files (game directory)
    • %localappdata% (cache)
    • %appdata% (config files)
  5. Reinstall Skate and launch it again.
