How to Fix COD ‘Memory Error 19 148’

Some Call of Duty Modern Warfare players are encountering the ‘Memory Error 19 148’ when playing certain maps. When this error occurs, the game restarts so the connection to the game server is lost. This problem is reported to occur on both PC and game consoles (Xbox One and PlayStation 4).

Error Code 19 148 in Call of Duty

After investigating this particular issue, it turns out that there are several different causes that might produce this error. Here’s a shortlist of potential culprits:

  • Underlying server issue – As it turns out, this particular error code might also surface in those instances where there’s an ongoing server issue. In this case, the only thing you can do is confirm the problem and wait for the qualified developers to fix the problem.
  • Overusing of VRAM – According to some affected users, you can expect to see this error code if you’re pushing the capabilities of your GPU too far, not leaving enough VRAM for OS activities. In this case, you might be able to fix this problem by lowering VRAM usage in the game settings.
  • Improper Windows Paging File – If you’re using a manual Page File or you disabled it completely, that’s probably the reason why you’re seeing this error code. In this case, you can fix the problem by enlarging the Windows Page file or re-enabling it (if it’s currently disabled).

Method 1: Checking for a Server issue

Before you try any of the following fixes below, you should take a few minutes and investigate for an ongoing server issue that might cause this particular error code.

If you are currently seeing the Memory Error 19 174 with multiple multiplayer modes in COD Modern Warfare (not just with Ground War), chances are Activision is currently dealing with a widespread issue.

The good news is, Activision has a dedicated page where you can check for server issues regardless of the platform where you’re encountering the issue on. All you need to do is open the status page and select Call of Duty Modern Warfare from the drop-down menu in the right section of the screen.

Checking the status server of Call of Duty Modern Warfare

Once you’re inside the status page, see if the website is currently reporting any issues. If every entry has a green checkmark (Online), it means that every server is operating normally.

However, this problem can also occur due to a problem with the platform infrastructure. This is why is important to verify whether there are any server issues with the platform of choice. You can check this via the list under Server Status by Network.

Once you get redirected to the platform status page, see if any server issues are currently reported.

Verifying the Status Page of the platform where you’re playing the game

Note: If one of the status pages are currently reporting server errors, you should also check 3rd party services like IsItDownRightNow and DownDetector to see if other players in your area are currently seeing the same Memory Error 19 148.

In case it’s clear that you’re dealing with a server issue, the only thing you can do is wait for the problem to be resolved by the qualified developers – The fixes below won’t be effective in this case.

If the investigation didn’t reveal an underlying server problem, move down below for a verified way of fixing the issue locally.

Method 2: Lower VRAM & Texture Settings (PC Only)

The majority of users that were previously encountering the Memory Error 19 148 have reported that the issue was finally fixed after they accessed the in-game  Settings menu and lowered the texture detail and the maximum amount of VRAM that the game is allowed to be used.

This modification was confirmed to be effective by a lot of affected users that were previously facing this particular error code. This is typically reported to be effective in those situations where the system you’re playing the game from is barely equipped to support the minimum requirements.

Here’s a quick guide on lowering VRAM (Video Random Access Memory) and the used textures from the settings menu of your game:

  1. Open Call of Duty Modern Warfare and click on the Settings tab from the initial startup screen.
  2. Next, from the Settings menu, click on the Graphics tab from the list of available sub-tabs, then tone down the Texture Resolution to Normal (or under).

  3. Save the changes and see the updated VRAM usage in the top-right corner. If the usage is still high, downgrade other settings until you leave at least 30% of the VRAM unused before saving the changes again.
  4. Join the same map that was previously causing the problem and see if the same issue is still occurring.

In case you still end up encountering the 19 148 error code, move down to the next potential fix below.

Method 2: Enlarging the Windows Page File Windows Only)

According to some affected users, this problem might occur in situations where the PageFile is not large enough to accommodate the needs of the game (Call of Duty Modern Warfare).

This problem is commonly encountered in situations where the user has previously disabled the Windows Pagefile or they changed the Pagefile allocation from automated to manually.

if this scenario is applicable, you should be able to fix this problem by enabling and enlarging the default Windows Pagefile.

If you don’t know how to do this by yourself, follow the instructions below:

  1. Open up a Run dialog box by pressing Windows key + R. Next, type ‘sysdm.cpl’ inside the text box and press Enter to open up the System Properties screen.
    Run dialog: sysdm.cpl
    Run dialog: sysdm.cpl
  2. Inside the System Properties screen, click on the Advanced tab from the list of options at the top, then click on Settings (associated with the Performance Options menu).
  3. Inside the Performance Options menu, make your way to the Advanced tab again and click on the Change button associated with Virtual Memory.
  4. Inside the Virtual Memory screen, uncheck the box associated with Automatically manage paging file size for all drivers (if the box is currently checked).
  5. Next, make your way to the Custom size menu and boost the values of Initial Size and Maximum size. A good strategy is to make your page file size 4x times the amount of physical memory currently available in your PC.
  6. Once the correct value has been established, click the Set button to adjust the value of the Paging file.
  7. Finally, click on Apply to save the changes, then reboot your computer and wait for the next startup to complete.
  8. After the next startup is complete, launch the game once again an see if the problem is now fixed.
