How to Fix “Clean Up” Tool Not Showing on iPhone?
If the Clean Up button does not appear in Photos on an iPhone, the missing button is usually tied to Apple Intelligence, not to a broken Photos app.

Clean Up only appears after the iPhone qualifies for Apple Intelligence, the required local models are set up, and the photo is opened from the correct edit screen. A supported iPhone may also hide the tool while Apple Intelligence is still downloading, while an unsupported iPhone will not show the button no matter how many times Photos is reopened.
1. Check That This iPhone Actually Supports Clean Up
Apple lists Clean Up as an Apple Intelligence feature in Photos. On iPhone, that means the phone must be an Apple Intelligence-capable model, such as iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or a supported newer iPhone model.
This is the most important check if the button has never appeared. An iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, or older iPhone can run modern iOS versions, but that alone does not make it eligible for Apple Intelligence features like Clean Up.
- Open Settings > General > About and confirm the exact iPhone model.
- If the phone is not an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone, stop here. The missing Clean Up button is expected on that device.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest available iOS update. Apple lists iOS 18.1 or later as the baseline for Clean Up, with newer availability rules applying in some regions.

A supported iPhone still needs the required iOS version before Clean Up can appear in Photos. - If you live in the European Union, make sure the iPhone is on iOS 18.4 or later, because Apple lists that as the EU availability point for most Apple Intelligence features on supported iPhones and iPads.
- If the iPhone was purchased in China mainland, or you are currently in China mainland with your Apple Account Country/Region also set there, compare your setup with Apple’s current China mainland rule before assuming Photos is broken.
If the model or regional rule does not qualify, Photos is not hiding a working tool. If the iPhone is supported and updated, continue with Apple Intelligence setup.
2. Turn On Apple Intelligence and Let the Models Finish Downloading
Clean Up is powered by Apple Intelligence, and Apple says the on-device models start downloading after the software update. The download can take time, especially if the phone is low on storage or not left on Wi-Fi and power.
A supported iPhone can therefore show no Clean Up button, or show a stuck preparation state, while Apple Intelligence is still not fully ready.
- Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence if it is off.

Clean Up can stay missing while Apple Intelligence itself is still turned off or not fully prepared. - Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and make sure the phone has enough free space. Apple’s current Apple Intelligence requirements call for about 7 GB of available storage on the device.
- Connect the iPhone to reliable Wi-Fi and keep it on power while Apple Intelligence finishes downloading its models.

Apple Intelligence needs local model storage and setup time before Photos features such as Clean Up are ready. - Leave the phone for a while if Settings still shows Apple Intelligence downloading or preparing. Rechecking Photos repeatedly will not make the model download finish faster.
If Clean Up appears after setup completes, the issue was unfinished Apple Intelligence preparation. If Apple Intelligence is already ready, check the language setup next.
3. Match the iPhone Language and Siri Language
Apple’s current Apple Intelligence requirements say the device language and Siri language must be set to the same supported language. If they do not match, Apple Intelligence features can remain unavailable even when the iPhone model and iOS version are correct.
This is easy to miss after restoring from another region, testing old rollout workarounds, or changing Siri to a different language from the iPhone itself.
- Go to Settings > General > Language & Region.
- Set the iPhone to a language supported by Apple Intelligence, such as English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, or another language Apple currently lists as supported.

Clean Up can stay unavailable if the iPhone is using an unsupported Apple Intelligence language setup. - Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Set Siri Language to the same language as the iPhone.

The device language and Siri language must match for Apple Intelligence features to settle correctly. - If you changed Siri language recently, wait for the new Siri language download to finish before checking Photos again.
If the language match brings Clean Up back, the missing button was caused by Apple Intelligence eligibility rather than Photos. If the language setup is already correct, test the exact Photos workflow.
4. Open a Still Photo from the Correct Photos Edit Screen
Apple’s Photos guide places Clean Up inside the normal edit flow for a photo: open the photo, tap Edit, then tap Clean Up. It is not a general button that appears in every Photos view or every media type.
Before treating this as a system problem, test with a regular still image from your library rather than a video, Live Photo motion view, screenshot workflow, or shared preview screen.
- Open the Photos app.
- Choose a normal still photo from your library.
- Tap Edit.
- Look for Clean Up in the edit tools.

- If the tool appears, tap Clean Up. Some objects may highlight automatically, and you can tap, brush, or circle what you want to remove.
- If you were testing on a video or another non-standard Photos surface, repeat the test with a still photo first.
If the button appears from this path, the problem was where or what you were editing. If the iPhone qualifies and the tool still stays missing, refresh the local Apple Intelligence state.
5. Refresh Apple Intelligence if Clean Up Is Stuck Preparing or Still Missing
If Photos shows Preparing Clean Up, Downloading Clean Up, or the button still does not appear after every requirement checks out, the local Apple Intelligence setup may be stuck.
Start with a normal restart. If that does not help, rebuilding Apple Intelligence is the cleaner reset because Apple says turning Apple Intelligence off removes the on-device models from the device. Turning it back on forces the setup process to start again.
- Close Photos completely and reopen it.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and power, then test Clean Up again on the same still photo.
- If it still stays stuck, go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn Apple Intelligence off.
- Restart the iPhone once more.
- Turn Apple Intelligence back on, then keep the phone on Wi-Fi and power until setup finishes.

If Clean Up is stuck preparing, rebuild Apple Intelligence only after the iPhone, iOS version, language, storage, and Photos edit path are already correct.
If Clean Up still does not appear on a supported iPhone after this reset, contact Apple Support. Include the exact iPhone model, iOS version, device language, Siri language, current country, Apple Account Country/Region, and whether the device was purchased in China mainland.
