How to Fix the Black Screen Problem in GTA V

GTA V can freeze on a black screen right after starting from the Rockstar Games Launcher. When this happens, you might hear sound, but nothing shows on your screen. This problem usually means the game is having trouble showing the main menu or setting up the display.

The most common reason is that the game’s resolution settings don’t match your screen. Other reasons include old graphics drivers, a broken settings file, or issues with overlay programs.

Now that we’ve gone over the main causes, let’s look at some simple and effective solutions to fix this issue.

1. Temporarily Disable the Graphics Driver

This solution is especially helpful if your system is below the minimum requirements for GTA V. In many cases, an incompatible graphics card is the cause of the black screen. Temporarily disabling the GPU driver can stop GTA V from detecting the graphics card, which might fix the problem.

  1. Press the Win key and type Device Manager.
  2. Open Device Manager and expand the Display Adapters section.
  3. Right-click your GPU Driver and select Disable Device.
  4. Click Yes to confirm the change.
  5. Start GTA V and check if the black screen issue is gone. If the problem continues, try the next methods below.

2. Adjust Compatibility Settings

Changing certain compatibility settings may help fix the black screen by letting the game run as if it’s on an older version of Windows. This can be especially useful for older copies of GTA V. It’s also a good idea to turn off full-screen optimization, as this stops Windows from interfering with GTA V’s full screen mode, which sometimes causes black screen problems.

  1. Go to the folder where GTA V is installed on your computer.
  2. Right-click the GTA V icon (executable file) and select Properties.
  3. Click the Compatibility tab, check the box for Run this program in compatibility mode, and pick Windows 7.
  4. Make sure Disable full-screen optimizations is also checked.
  5. Click Apply and then OK to save your changes.
  6. Launch GTA V to see if the black screen is fixed.

3. Delete the Settings.xml File

The Settings.xml file stores graphics and display settings for GTA V. If this file gets corrupted, or if the settings inside are not compatible with your hardware, the game might show a black screen. Deleting this file will reset your graphics options to the default, which can often solve the problem.

  1. Open the folder where GTA V is installed and look for the GTA.exe file.
  2. Find the Settings.xml file and delete it.
  3. Start GTA V and see if the black screen issue is resolved.

4. Reinstall the GPU Driver

Sometimes, your graphics driver may be outdated or not working correctly, which can lead to black screens. Reinstalling the driver ensures that you have the latest version and that everything is set up properly, helping the game run smoothly.

  1. Press the Win key and type Device Manager in the search box.
  2. Open Device Manager and expand Display Adapters.
  3. Right-click your GPU driver and choose Uninstall Device.
  4. Click Uninstall again to confirm.
  5. Go to your graphics card maker’s official website and download the latest driver.
  6. Once the file is ready, run the installer and follow any instructions to set up the new driver.
  7. Restart your computer to ensure the new driver is fully installed.
  8. Start GTA V and check if the black screen problem is gone.

5. Pause the GTA V Process for 5 to 10 Seconds

Temporarily pausing the GTA V process can help the game sort itself out, especially if it freezes or shows a black screen while it’s starting up. This method forces the computer to re-check what the game is doing.

  1. Press Win + S together to open the Search Menu.
  2. Type in Resource Monitor and hit Enter.
  3. Right-click the GTA V process and choose Suspend Process.
  4. Wait about 10 to 15 seconds, then right-click the GTA V process again and select Resume Process.
  5. Check if the black screen issue has disappeared.

If you still have trouble after these steps, the black screen might be caused by corrupted or missing game files. In that case, it’s a good idea to verify the game files or, if nothing else works, try reinstalling the game as a last resort.
