How to Fix Back 4 Blood Game has Crashed Error on Windows?

Back 4 Blood often crashes to the desktop while you’re playing, especially in the middle of a mission or when loading into new areas. There’s usually no warning or freezing before it happens. When the game crashes, you might see an error message like “UE4-Gobi Game has crashed and will close.” This means that Unreal Engine had a serious problem, usually because something went wrong with your graphics.

This problem most often happens if your graphics card driver is broken or isn’t compatible, especially after a system or graphics update. It can also be caused by corrupted game settings files or unstable overclocked hardware. In some cases, the crash is caused by issues with the game’s shader cache or when the game’s DirectX settings don’t match what your computer can handle.

Now that you know the causes, let’s discuss the solutions.

1. Restart the Game

Before diving into detailed troubleshooting, try restarting the game. Sometimes, a fresh start can clear temporary glitches and refresh game resources, leading to smoother gameplay.

  1. First, simply close the game and close the Steam App completely.
  2. Open the Start Menu and launch the Task Manager.
  3. Select the Steam App from the list and click End Task.
  4. Relaunch the Steam App, go to your Library, and select the Back 4 Blood game.
  5. Click Play and check if the error still appears.

2. Verify the Integrity of Game Files

Corrupted or missing files can cause game crashes. Verifying the integrity of game files will scan for issues and re-download any missing or corrupted files automatically. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the Steam App and go to your Library.
  2. Find Back 4 Blood, then right-click on it.
  3. Select Properties and click on the Local Files tab.
Verify the Integrity of Game Integrity

  4. Click Verify Integrity of Game Files. This process may take a few minutes. If Steam finds any issues, it will automatically re-download the necessary files.
  5. Once the process is complete, launch Back 4 Blood and check if the problem is fixed.

3. Install the Latest Game Patch

Game developers frequently release patches to fix bugs and improve performance. Sometimes a new patch may even trigger new issues, but it’s important to have the latest updates. If a patch is available, Steam or the Epic Games Launcher will normally prompt you to download and install it automatically. After updating, launch Back 4 Blood and check if the error is resolved.

4. Update your Graphics Card Drivers

A properly functioning graphics card is essential for gaming. If Back 4 Blood keeps crashing, it’s possible your system has outdated or corrupted graphics card drivers.

  1. Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Display Adapters section, then right-click your graphics card.

  3. Select Update driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
  4. If prompted, click “Check for updated drivers on Windows Update”. Once updated, restart your PC and launch the game to see if the problem persists.

5. Run Epic Games Launcher in the Background

Sometimes, launching both the Steam App and the Epic Games Launcher in the background can help, as certain Unreal Engine files might rely on the Epic Launcher. Remember to update Epic Games Launcher before starting Back 4 Blood. Once both apps are open, try launching the game again to check if the issue is resolved.

6. Perform a Clean Boot

Multiple background applications can conflict with your game and cause crashes. Performing a clean boot helps identify if a third-party program is causing the problem.

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type msconfig and press OK to open the System Configuration utility.
  3. Go to the Services tab, check the box for “Hide all Microsoft services”, and then click Disable All.

  4. Click the Startup tab and open Task Manager.
  5. Disable all startup items listed.
  6. Return to System Configuration and click OK, then restart your computer.
  7. Try launching the game to see if the problem is gone. (If the issue is fixed, re-enable each service one by one and restart to identify which one causes the problem. Once found, uninstall or disable the problematic program and re-enable the others.)

7. Disable Overclocking

Although overclocking can help improve game performance, it can also cause your system to overheat or become unstable, especially if your cooling system can’t keep up. This extra stress may damage your CPU, graphics card, or RAM over time, leading to crashes. If you are overclocking your hardware, revert to default clock speeds and see if this resolves the error.

8. Run the Game in DirectX 11 Mode

Back 4 Blood can run in either DirectX 12 or DirectX 11 mode. While DirectX 12 can provide better graphics and performance, some hardware or games may not fully support it, resulting in crashes. Switching to DirectX 11 often provides better stability.

  1. Open Steam and go to your Library.
  2. Right-click Back 4 Blood and select Properties.
  3. Select the General tab on the left. In the launch options field, type -dx11.
  4. Close properties, click Play, and then select “Play in DX11 Compatibility Mode” if prompted.
  5. Click the Play button. Hopefully, the error will be resolved.
